mandrel: drill bit or screwdriver for wrapping a coil on. Depending on the coils you make. If you make microcoils like SXD then you want something about 1/16" (music wire is 0.55" so close enough, as is a coathanger!).
If you are sloppy and carefree like me then you'll just wrap one and worry about the particulars later, like how to wick it etc. HRH prefers coils just wrapped right onto the wick, so there are a lot of different ways to get a vape and that's before we start thinking about different wicking materials and thickness of wires and so on.
The reason i'd recommend you start with microcoils is that they are easy and they are repeatable. 5 wraps of x = Ω y - every time.
It is only when you start messing about with more than one coil that you have to learn a little more and especially if you run coils under 1Ω. If you just want a good, reliable vape, then it's easy to achieve, assuming you can get the cap off!
