It's my first question too Chimney... I'm having another 'duh blonde' day!!!! (lol)

I think that this is the new thread. I had suggested that LisaLisa might want to separate the questions that had been asked in the previous Bible study thread that I was answering. I probably missed a few.

Q. Why are the genealogies given by Matthew and Luke different?

A. The Jews had been told that the Messiah would come through the line of David. The genealogy in Matthew shows the lineage of Joseph. Though not the natural father, since he took Mary as his wife, he became Jesus' legal father. The genealogy shows that Joseph was indeed a descendant of David through Solomon. However, a few generations afterward the legal heir to the throne, Jechonias sinned greatly and was told through the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 22: 24-30) that none of his offspring would ever sit on the throne of David or rule over Judah. However, the genealogy in Luke shows that Mary is descended from Nathan, the son of David and Bathsheba and therefore could provide "David's seed" that would sit on the throne forever.

Lisa,

Is this the new thread? I got here from another link. I didn't know we were going to post the other things that lead to the "discussion" of Israel and Palestine in this thread. I figured we just start a whole new thread from scratch so to speak. It isn't the first time I have been confused and certainly not the last...LOL!

Ok, now you guys got me confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL! We have 2 threads. One is the Bible Study thread, which is now a sticky at the top of the forum. That is for reading the bible chapters for the week, and the commentary by Chimney.

This thread is for discussion, questions, and so on. A few people asked that we cleaned it up and organized it a little better, so I think this is a good start. If anyone has a suggestion, just let me know. Always happy to help out in anyway that I can :)

Ohhhh.....Chimney has chapter 8 already posted in the Bible Study Thread! Love it, awesome! :)

I have some questions tho.

Why didn't Jesus want the leper to tell anyone that he had been healed in verse 4?

"11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Is verse 12 talking about hell?

I also believe that many many many people today are demon possessed. I"m 100% sure of it. I too wonder why the demons wanted to go into the pigs, only to have them jump off a cliff. Doesn't make sense at all for the demons to do this.

They are different because they are from two different people. One from Marry and the other is Joseph. There is a lot of info how how this came to be when you study the authors of the books.

Ok there is a few things to note here. For starters, Jesus doesn't subscribe to sensationalism.

The reason he didn't tell the leper to tell anyone, was for the leper's own sake. Lepers were not allowed to freely mix with society so if the leper were to intermix with people, they would have deadly consequences. Literally they could be killed. When lepers did mix with people, they actually had to yell out "unclean" as they walked so people would know to stay away. "He first had to go to the priest so that he would be proclaimed as clean." At this point and not untill then would he be allowed to mix and speak with others freely.

I (think!) Jesus wanted the Leper to remain 'quiet' as He didn't want to stir things up (just yet!) with the Religious People knowing 'His time' would come soon but not just 'yet'...

I believe Christ is referring to the evil 'kingdom' (systems) of this World would be thrown into Sheol (outer darkness)... I'm not sure, but I believe this may be a 'level' of Hell as Hell is reserved for Satan and His Angels that originally fell and led the Nations (Kingdoms) into darkness.

* Somebody chime in and help me out here!

Let me gather my thoughts on this one.... in a nut shell its because when Luke took the genealogy he spoke directly to Marry. In Matthew it was not so. I believe Matthew recorded this by word of mouth and Luke by word of Marry directly. Off the top of my head that s all I was to say untill I refresh my memory.

The genealogy recorded by Luke was likely to have come from Mary. However, there is little indication that Joseph lived until the public ministry of Jesus. But these type of records would be easy to get since everyone kept track of their genealogy. It was also known that Joseph was of the house of David because that's where he and Mary went to be counted in the census. The point was that Joseph was a legal heir to David through Solomon and that Jesus as his "step-son" would inherit that as well.

Jons already answered that one. Thank you, Jons.

He's talking about Hades--the place where the souls of the unbelieving dead go until the Great White Throne Judgment and afterward to eternal condemnation to the lake of fire. This shows that the Jews do not have a "special arrangement" with God as some people and denominations say. Jews need to know of Christ every bit as much as gentiles do.

Whether they are possessed long-term, or just for a time, I agree with you. "Dramatic" movies, such as "The Exorcist" do nothing to get people to take demon possession more seriously. If you read the news daily, you can see "everyday people" doing things that only 20 years ago would make others cringe in horror.

The Exorcist literally scared the 'hell' out of me.....for awhile. I mean I had no idea satan and dominions had that much power on earth. That was a shock. When the head pivoted, that was all I could take. Unfortunately, I rode with a group of people, so I sat out the rest of the movie in the ladies rest room asking God to forgive every sin I could think of. It didn't last. It was an emotional response.......seeds fallen on shallow ground. It took hold for a time and then was gone. When I had my Damascus Road, the seeds fell on deep fertile ground and grew.:)

I too wonder why the demons wanted to go into the pigs, only to have them jump off a cliff. Doesn't make sense at all for the demons to do this.

I did a bit of research this evening. The general consensus with "reputable" Bible teachers lies in the words of the demons who recognized Christ and asked if He had come to torture them before the "appointed time". They know their eternal destiny and recognized Jesus' authority. They did not want to be sent to the Abyss and asked instead to be sent into the herd of pigs. Knowing that it was not the "appointed time", Jesus honored their request. (We're told in another gospel account of the same incident that the demon's name was Legion and was actually about 2000 demons possessing the 2 men.) When the demons went into the herd of pigs, the pigs could not take it and drove themselves into the lake. (One teacher--don't remember who--suggested that the demons were hoping that maybe the owners of the pigs hearing what had happened would come out and kill Jesus for ruining their livelihood. They did not kill Him, but came to ask Him to leave.)
