Was Hades mentioned in the old testament too?

Hades was the name of the Greek god of the underworld and the name of the underworld itself. The Septuagint (the earliest Greek translation of the Old Testament) used hades to translate the Hebrew word Sheol. Whereas in the Old Testament, the distinction in the fates of the righteous and the wicked was not always clear, in the New Testament hades refers to a place of torment opposed to heaven as the place of Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:23; Acts 2:27, 31). In Matt. 16:18 hades is not simply a place of the dead but represents the power of the underworld. Jesus said the gates of hades would not prevail against His church.

The Hebrew word that “hell” translated was Sheol. The word Sheol occurs sixty-five times in the Hebrew Bible.

Sheol is a Hebrew word that has taken on the properties of a proper name. The Old Testament uses the word to refer to a place in the depths of the earth. The expressions “go down” or “brought down” are used twenty times in connection with Sheol. The “depths of Sheol” are mentioned six times (Deut. 32:22; Ps. 86:13; Prov. 9:18; 15:24; Isa. 7:11; 14:15). Four times Sheol is described as the farthest point from heaven (Job 11:8; Ps. 139:8; Isa. 7:11; Amos 9:2). Often Sheol is parallel with the “pit” (Job 17:13-14; 33:18; Ps. 30:3; 88:3-4; Prov. 1:12; Isa. 14:15; 38:18; Ezek. 31:14-17). Nine times it is parallel with death (2 Sam. 22:6; Ps. 18:4-5; 49:14; 89:48; 116:3; Prov. 5:5; Isa. 28:15, 18; Hos. 13:14; Hab. 2:5). Sheol is described in terms of overwhelming floods, water, or waves (Jonah 2:2-6). Sometimes, Sheol is pictured as a hunter setting snares for its victim, binding them with cords, snatching them from the land of the living (2 Sam 22:6; Job 24:19; Ps. 116:3); Sheol is a prison with bars, a place of no return (Job 7:9; 10:21; 16:22; 21:13; Ps. 49:14; Isa. 38:10). People could go to Sheol alive (Num. 16:30, 33; Ps. 55:15; Prov. 1:12). With rare exceptions, such as Elijah (2 Kings 2:1-12), all people were believed to go to Sheol when they die (Job 3:11-19; Ps. 89:48).

Hell - Sheol - Hades - Gehenna - Tartaroo - Lake Of Fire - Outer Darkness - Second Death

Thanks Chimney!!!!!!!!!! :):):) I have to admit, the whole sheol, hades, hell thing is so confusing to me even still. I guess I'll just hope to never end up there :)

OK, so I have to add this even though you all moved on and I have been watching election stuff all day...Muslims are instructed to show a different face to the infidels. Islam instructs Muslims to pretend to respect an Infidel boss or any Infidel who is above them at work but to hold hatred in your heart always for the infidel. This goes with discussions as well. A group of Muslims may be having a conversation about whatever and as soon as an infidel enters the room that conversation stops immediately and a new conversation starts because there is an infidel present. The key here is that they (Muslims) are instructed by Islam to ALWAYS hold hatred in their hearts for any infidel who is in their presence even if they are being "nice". Islam is always at war with the infidels and in war deception and lies are accepted, and expected, to win the war against and bring death to all infidels. I could say a lot more on this but you get the idea. Also it is my understanding that the most important verses in the Koran are toward the back of the book, where it is most violent in its language, as those verses were written later and so they supersede (override) the earlier verses just as the Hadith now does. Muslims, in my opinion, who will lie to you face with a smile and hold hatred in their heart for you and wish your death are simply unworthy of trust. It goes for the Koran just as with the Bible, you believe ALL of it or NONE of it. There is no middle ground. There is not "Cafeteria Islam" where you pick and choose what you believe.

Hi All,

I found this interesting that Oklahoma had on their ballot yesterday and initiative to ban Sharia Law and international law from being considered in their courts' rulings. I don't know yet if it passed or not, I hope it did. Britain is on the brink of being completely under the rule of Sharia law, led by a man named Choudray (I could be incorrect in the spelling) and he has been pushing this issue forward for years; and is incredibly outspoken and he has a huge following as well. With Mohamed being the number one name for boys being used right now in the UK I think that they are not far off from being completely under Sharia law. Many states already have Sharia law operating withing their states for things such as divorce, settling of debts and several other things and the courts in those states have come down on the side of Sharia law when a case is contested in our normal courts. This should alarm each and every one of us. This is one of the harshest forms of law on the planet, we need to start paying closer attention, it isn't called "Creeping Sharia" for no reason.

Oh! you're GOOD Kelly! This is the truth! That is one of the FIRST things my Husband 'taught' me!
He said the Koran over rides the Bible just as any 'letter' you write a friend over rides the 'previous' one!
I, of course told Him that comparison was like 'apples to oranges' but he was a Muslim.. what did I expect? Well, I suppose a true conversion, which didn't happen..

What in the wide wide world of sports is a going on here! People have just gone nutzo. It's soooo amazing to me how people want to get along with the muslims. They think that if they go along with them, that will keep them safe. WRONG-O! I'm talking about achmadenijerk, for one (the little iranian guy) bin ladle (the guy hides behind everyone else) and all these others. Do you remember the dead eyes Mohammed Atta had in that shot they show on tv? There was no life in them and he wasn't even dead yet. My wish is for them all to get saved by the Blood of Jesus Christ, and many have. I want people saved......I don't want anyone to perish in the 2nd death. But what I don't understand is why many people in the U.S. are bending over backwards with this PC stuff. They are giving our country away. The U.S. has passed the test for being stupid.

Lord, our country, that You gave to us, the ones grafted into the vine, is about to be handed over to infidels on a silver platter. This reminds me of how the children of Israel built a golden calf while Moses was getting the Law from You.....history is repeating itself. I know that all of them didn't worship the calf, just as I know that all citizens in America haven't turned away from You. Please have mercy on us, Oh Holy One, as we don't live in the world. Our home is in Heaven with You. We are humbly awaiting Your return in the clouds, Lord Jesus, at just any moment. Our hearts hurt for the lost. We trust You to put people in the paths of those who yearn for You to be their Savior. Thank You Lord for Your many blessings. Protect us from the ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing. We love You, Lord and it's in Your Holy Name we pray, Amein.

Are we talking theologically here, or what really happened? If you want the reality of the situation I can provide a measure of understanding coming from a study of the day to day life 2000 years ago in the middle east as it relates to Jesus and his family.

If you are just looking for a bible lesson, I can't help you. I only deal with hardware, not software.

Hi iJax,

Welcome, I'm not sure what you're saying here.

lesson 1. There is no such thing as a Christian 2000 years ago. There are no Christian values 2000 years ago. Divorce 2000 years ago is now called murder by our standards. 2000 years ago, "I want a divorce." = 2010. "You f$^%# O&^, I am going to kill you.". Some joining of families (sons to daughters) split without violence for financial reasons. If your daughter got pregnant while her husband was away on business...she was dead by your hands or you owed the husband $$$ and he still killed her, or the community killed her....that was divorce 2000 years ago.

Do you have sources to back up your claims? Or are you so old that you remember that far back?

LOL. Jesus wasn't a Christian. He was Jewish. The Christian movement didn't start until 20ish years after his death. What you and I know of as "Christian values" I also call software. Its written and re-written for over 2000 years. First in one language then another. When the "code" doesn't make sense, new code is written. There is no such name as "Jesus" 2000 years ago...lol It would be like me naming my son "Blanket". No-one is going to do that...oh wait.....

Well anyway if you remove the "software" and just look at the hardware, you can piece together a day to day life and make assessments (or assumptions) on what was "Possible, Probably and unlikely".

So in the OP you asked about the name...thats software, it will change. In another 2000 years he maybe called Bill or Bob..who knows.

as for the marriage / divorce thing. It the Jewish sect Mary and Joseph were thought to be in based on the region and writings supporting their village...mary was in fact Josephs wife (as we know the term), the ceremony wasn't complete yet, but that had nothing to do with the joining of them. That had more to do with the families financial growth, this is why Mary had to go with Joseph for census in Bethlehem. He was rich and a pregnant wife increased that wealth a lot if she had a boy while in Bethlehem.

On the divorce thing, Joseph was away on business, he came home to a pregnant wife. As per the Jewish law of the sect they are thought to be in, it was up to him and the village elders to stone her to death and place financial fee on the male who impregnated her.

This is what is known of the day to day life 2000 years ago. what you were taught maybe different. To each his own. I have read several pages here...and I am out of it. Like I said, I deal in facts of hardware, not software. Koran, Old testament, new testament, Portages, King James, Eithiopian...its all software and you can talk about that...I know nothing of that stuff.
