Okay I opened the USPS box and took the two at issue apart. Took the atomizers out of the tubes, here's my photo of them:

Doesn't seem like this would cause the problems I had though.
Opened up a brand new one too. Here's its coil:

See? Nothing is burned. That's what I was saying. The wick is discolored, but I can almost guarantee it will wipe off. I CAN guarantee the wick is not burned, because it won't burn even if held directly in a flame.

I think what you are experiencing is the same problem as Trich, you are getting some liquid on the coil when you fill, which leaves residue behind when you take the first few puffs. That's the discoloration on the wick. The residue burns on the coil causing the bad taste. So far all of the reports of this have been with refilled carts, not prefilled, and the majority have been using fresh batteries or passthroughs. I am also thinking the VG concentration may be a factor, since VG isn't in our liquids, but is in most of the refill liquids.

Leaford:

- I saturate the carto and then blow it out. And I typically blow out the carto for 1 additional second AFTER there is no more pooling visible with the cap off. Always have. It always, always works. I may get gurgling and limited vapor initially, but no bad taste. Ever.
- Are you saying the coil vaporizes the moisture AROUND it and shouldn't get saturated? If so, that is new to me and I would have to change filling methods. And the Taryn spin could not be used (say it isn't so!) because it surely forces liquid all over the coil!
- But still, shouldn't the coil burn off the excess liquid quickly? The burnt taste I had didn't go away. I even timed out the battery several times (manual battery, 10 second cut-off!), in an attempt to burn-in (no pun intended) the cartomizer....

I just got in 25 of the blanks today. Popped one open and saturated it - and yes I mean SATURATED it! It tastes like burnt urine badly! Dang I love the vapor of these things! Please get them fixed! I hope I find some good ones out of the 25 I just got - I am very dissapointed in these. :( There has to be some type of GLUE or PRIMER on these that are giving off such a vile taste!!!

Ok - my camera isn't that great but I have 3 of the MaxxFusion cartos that I opened up and took pictures of:

#1 - Brand new carto with one saturation of 50/50 FSUSA American Spirit

#2 - Old, MF Grape 11mg carto - was refilled once with Dekang grape

#3 - Brand new blank carto - never filled - dry-burned for two 3 second fires

I don't know if this helps any or not but wanted to do a comparison.

The coils in all 3 are pretty charred which I wouldn't expect so soon.

Well it's good to know I'm not crazy. I have decided to stay with V4L for my blanks. Theirs are not sensitive to vg/pg or fully charged batteries or whatever other reasons they come up with. Blank cartos should work with all juices period or carry a disclaimer stating exactly what will or won't work with them. Toni actually did report a burnt taste in a prefilled cart in another thread. I have 2 boxes of prefilleds on the way so I can test them myself. The saga continues.....

EXPERIMENT:

- I took 2 new MF blanks and Bear Claw Organic VG 12mg juice from Velvet Vapors, filling one SLOWLY with only 20 drops, letting each drop wick down the carto. After 20 drops I set it aside.

- Next I filled the other blank with 40 drops, spinning twice to get the 40 drops in. There was still pooling so it was filled to the top. Saturated. I blew it out for a second, saw diminished pooling, blew 1 additional second.

- I vaped each about fifty times on the same battery. No burnt taste on either. I want to try this again with PG later when the nicotine wears off!

CONCLUSION:
- It appears the blanks are sensitive to saturation with SOME VG liquids. Some don't care. I did go back and try the bad one I had at first and the bad taste was gone, so I am guessing it dissipates or fades. I will blow out any cartos that have this again and set them aside, filling only 20 drops with the juices that this happens with.

Customer service has agreed to replace my blanks with prefilled cartos. Thanks Mike! I will revisit the blanks after the kinks have been worked out and reported on.

At least I will get to experience the MF bliss this way.:vapor::vapor:

I can work around this. And tonight I will try an incompatible VG juice, that caused the problem initially, in a prefilled cartomizer that is running low. IAW, I will refill with VG. If my suspicion is correct, the problem only occurs in virgin blanks/virgin attys. If this is the case then all one needs to do is prime the blanks with VG juices, filling the first run with 20 drops only...

I think I'm getting that acrid taste from one now. I'm using an 80/20 pg/vg ratio and the first pack of cartos worked great with it. The first carto of the second pack got nasty. The liquid was one of the thinner ones and I filled just like any other carto, but this time I heard a ton of gurgling. The vapor productions was insane (much more than the first pack of cartos). What's strange is that I've had the best results with the thickest juice I had. I hope this is just a resistance consistency thing.

How is this going to work? If the problem is VG, why would you prime with it? Besides - cartos should be fill and vape - period. These definitely need some work as I've had cheap cartos that didn't taste like these!!!

I just emailed customer support - hope they will replace mine with prefilled as I haven't had a problem with those yet.

if y'all are not having the same problem with the prefilleds, then my guess would be that it is because they have had time to sit with juice in them. maybe try filling a blank and letting it sit for a few hours, or overnight, before using it and see what happens.

I have had plenty of prefilled produce the odd burnt flavor/odor. It is more common with the blanks.
