Thanks everyone!

I'll try it but if this was the problem why would I be getting the smell from a dry burn? I don't see any damage on any of my carts from melting.

My 510 attys came from TW and I vape alot with them. I use my DIY VG based ejuice with flavors from Cabella this requires more frequent cleaning in my opinion. I clean the attys regularly doing a short 20 min coke bath, rinse with water blow out and rinse and blow again. Then I let them dry a little and dry burn per mobyghost instructions on youtube for 4 to 5 secs....let cool...try another dry burn 4-5 secs...let cool. He said to do it until you see a red glow on the atty inside. There is smoke and nasty smells during the dry burn but I dont worry since it is getting rid of old ejuice etc. Then go through water rinse again to remove what scum flaked off during the dry burn. Some people had dead attys ready to throw away and tried all this with success.

When I go to fire them up after cleaning I always make sure that I prime the atty too. I do get an ugly taste for my first dripping and occasionally get nasty smelling smoke but it goes right away. I never inhale this first round of vaping.

BTW I heard the crest is hard on attys...but have never tried it myself.

Linky no worky.

As far as the issue popping it, IMO that's something that should happen and then people can make their own decisions about what they feel better doing. IMO, dry burns are a bad idea, VG/acrolein issue aside. So not doing them at all with VG is just an extra precaution that some people (once informed) can take if they so choose.

By that I mean acolein--it just is not there--I have dry burned atomizers with VG for over a year and a half--you just are not going to produce acrolein so there is no reason to for people to be concerned about it---that is what I am talking about that you where refering to. You may want to check out the extensive work in the Experimenting section with some of the fine Chemists we have here.

GoodDog,
try this, it works for me now after trying everything in the last 9 months.

1 - flush your atty under tap hot water for about 30 seconds or so (you don't need to boil it or make baths with weird stuff for ages, just flush it with hot water for 30 seconds)

2 - blow with your mouth through boths ends (big hole/little hole) of the atty for few seconds to just let it dry a little.

3 - connect your atty to your PV (a regular 3.7v device or ecig) without the cart or cart filler (!!) and perform a 12 seconds (cut-off) dry burn (press the button till cut-off while gently blowing through the mouthpiece -801- or empty cart -510/901- be sure you're blowing -not draggin inside-
you will see a little vapor coming out (it's vaporized water).
If you do not blow while dry burning the coil may get TOO HOT and you may damage it.

4 - do this dry burn 4 times in a row. After that your atty will be perfectly dry and ready to get new juice again.

5 - drip between 5 to 8 drops of liquid into the atty (801), or 2 to 5 (510).
wait a least 2 seconds between any drop, the mesh needs to absorb each drop before adding another one.
Now start vaping, if it doesn't produce much vapor add other drops till it start producing good vapor.
Now the bad taste will be gone.

this method was suggested by atty manufactures and posted on the forum by Mick from Janty few weeks ago.

You should do this cleaning thing every day once a day from day one of an atty. It's not that struggling, it just take about 2 minutes per day, not bad.

i was always getting a bad taste with all my atties after only 1 or 2 days of use.
Now i'm a happy vaper and solved the bad tasting thing once for all.

In the end, when you get a bad taste it can be two things:
your atty is too dry (just add few drops or top off cart)
or
you got residues stuck on the coil (do the cleaning thing)

best

Well I have to say i have/had the same issue. I know what caused it just not sure how to get rid of the taste on the addy.
Mine was caused but a battery that just doesnt shut off and it well lets just say MELTED the fibers to the addy. I had to soak the addy for two days to get the stuff to release. I also decided two days ago that Dripping is the way to go with the 510. It just doesnt seem to wick fast enough for me I was sick of dripping the cart ever 3 hits..

I am about over the atty issue all together. I threw away the TW titan atty because they would not take it back, which goes against their claim to a 28-day warranty. I'm over it!!!! I just ordered the 901, and next week I'll give the pen-style a try and my collection will be complete. I have to say that if the new ones don't WOW me, I am going to have to stay with my Vapor King. I love that thing especially now I have been enlightened on what I was doing wrong in refilling them. I can make 1 cart last a whole week with 1 refill a day. I am loving that, and the fact that the short battery even last about 2.5 hours and the XL lasts 6 hours. So far this is the most maintenance free unit I have, and now thanks to refill advise, cheaper and better lasting than the others.

I think what I have is more than a dirty atty. I think the manufacturer used something different and when it heats up it sends off a bad taste/smell. Even my new attys are doing this after being used a couple of hours.

I keep going back and forth on whether it's me not keeping them clean enough or whether to give up on the 510 until the problem is solved.

What about the very real possibility that you got polyfill down into the atty coil? Happens all of the time, and when it does... it is very difficult to get the burned "taste" out of the atty.

People,

This issue is being reported in the Expert's Forum repeatedly everyday over and over again so I highly doubt that it is user error. I have received many PM's about the issue and they keep coming in.

It appears that the 510 atomizers have an issue with burning nickle mesh that is giving off a bad taste and must be coming out of the factory defective.

Try this and tell me how it works for you.

If your cart is mostly filled, then leave it as is, put 2 drops on the bridge and take a good pull, now place the 501 vertically tip side up so the warm liquid wicks down onto the bridge for a couple minutes, then take another pull and repeat his process. I try not to leave my 510 lay flat if I don't have to.

Now if your atty gets flooded, instead of tip side up try tip side down. Then you can find your happy place and alternate as necessary (tip up or tip down).

A happy atty is a well behaved atty.

Alright, so I did some experimenting last night and I've come to a theory/conclusion on the problem. If you missed my last post, I've had the same issues with the last 5 attys from TW....terrible, terrible plastic/chemical taste after vapeing for a few minutes with a full cart and several drips on the atty.

I tried the above method after boiling all five atomizers and then blowing them out with 20lbs of pressure. After 5 cycles of this, 2 drops each time, meaning that I had dropped 10 drops on the atomizer with a full cart within about 15 -20min. The atomizer never flooded and I smoked the thing constantly all night (1 1/2 carts full), no bad taste and the atomizer seems strong. I'm trying it again right now with another one from the bad batch.

My theory is that this batch of atomizers burns way hotter than the last. I guess you've got to gum it up enough to keep the heat down so it doesn't melt anything it touches. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

I had the same problem last night after my first atomizer died (my fault sry burned too long still a noob) anyway got that burnt plastic taste, bridge melted cart a little causing the taste. Decided to drip five drops into the atty with a filled cart. Needless to say im a happy vaper today havent had the taste and hope it doesnt come back.

Thanks for posting these detailed instructions. However, I am concerned about doing a 12 sec dry burn. I have just done 4 or 5 secs and let it cool in between per someone else's advice. I am also using coke bath for 20 mins tops. So far no problems with losing any of my standard TW 510 attys with alot of vaping and abuse due to my novice learning curve the past month.

Scottbee posted this somewhere for doing it on a PT...

I am really becoming a big fan of the "dry burn" along with water rinsing to bring some of these back.

On a standard PT, I will continue to do the dry burn and cooling cycle (you need to be careful here because there is a plastic washer in the 510 Joye atty that can melt) until I can get a coil to go "red" in under a second. Once I get to that point, one more warm water rinse.. dry her out.. and I'm usually good to go.

Just adding my feedback, I seem to have gotten a bad 510 atomizer too.

I tried several "fixes" including letting it soak with high grade alcohol for several hours and the best I can get this thing to do is not taste as horrible (usually after a DD alcohol) then the bad taste goes from docile to horrific again in no time.
I am returning the atomizer, and on my next order I am also getting a couple of 808 cartomizers to have something else to compare this too.

I have not tried what some people call "soaking" or otherwise drwoning the atomizer in liquid... I can't imagine that will go well with the wired parts, and have not tried this "dry burn" idea either.
