I've seen the topic of official names for these devices in several threads. I think this deserves it's own so we can come to a final settlement. This way everyone can name it appropriately and get away from the terminology we're currently using.

From what I gather:

• We don't want the word "smoke" to be associated because there's no smoke

• We don't want the word "cigarette" for obvious reasons

Some suggestions I've seen:

For the device itself:

• Personal nicotine inhaler (not appropriate because it doesn't have to contain nicotine)

• Personal vaporizer

• Electronic vaporizer (e-vaporizer)

For the act:

• Vaping (I think this is common. Stop saying e-smoking because there is no smoke!!

• E-vaping

So.. can we all agree on one phrase? There are folks climbing on board left and right and I think it'll help for more accurate information. Only problem is this forum for example. Tell ya what. If you guys want to create a new name I'll make you a logo. That way all you'll have to do is buy the new domain and forward it :)

Thanks everyone!!

I think I like personal vaporizer the best. inhaler sounds a little too medicinal and electronic makes it a little too techy and may spark unwanted interest.

Vaping, hands down. Again, I think e-vaping is a little to techy and like the "i" in ipod may appear attractive to young eyes.

just my opinion.

oh, and as far as changing the forum name or url or whathaveyou, you should probably PM SmokeyJoe to work that out and see if he's up for it.

To cast my vote anyway, I'd like to go with personal vaporizer. That seems like the most accurate description of what the device is. It's a vaporizer, only miniature and intended for personal use. Since all vaporizers are basically electronic already by default, "electronic" seems redundant and should be left out.

You also get a cool-lookin' acronym with that (PV). PS you should turn this into a poll.

from what I am reading here on the forum,
many are running around starting websites,
renaming things, generally doing all kinds of stuff
new and different,

I see suggestions of websites with all different names,
baccy, right to vape, etc.....
lots of suggestions for new names
to replace the e-cig,

how are you going to put up a united front
and use the same terminology,
if you are all racing off and doin' it
before you have had time to consult and corroborate.

all you are going to achieve is a whole lot more terminology that will confuse everyone all over again.
I am totally confused, and I think I know what you are talking about,
what about the newbies,
and more importantly the gov wallies.....

When I wrote in another thread of using "personal vaporizer" as preferable to "electric nicotine inhaler", I meant in official correspondence. When we present these devices to government and/or health agencies, they should not be referred to as "e-cigs" or "electronic cigarettes" for "e-smoking."

(And we never --- NEVER -- use "juice". One jury let Juice off for killing his wife, but he's in prison now, where he belongs. You can also send juice to the electric chair. You can give apple juice to your six-month-old baby with ......... But we don't use "juice" for vaping.)

Sad to say I agree with Equacion, though, that the name used for this forum and everywhere online has become the common nomenclature with the public and will not change. We can call our metal tube a Winky Dink if we want to; the public will Google "e-cig" to find one to buy.

Thanks TB. I was actually just trying to continue that conversation on a new thread. Another reason I was wanting an answer is for the new site I'm making which I'd like to be as accurate as possible. I was under the impression that e-cig/cigarette was not acceptable in the long run. I guess I'll add something like "The term E-Cigarette is slang. The device is actually a personal vaporizer" or something along those lines.

This reminds me of the font vs. typeface debate that went on in my design department between my fellow designers..lol. I'd always called it a font, but when I heard it wasn't actually a font I had a hard time calling it that. I'm having the same problem now. I almost don't feel right calling it a cigarette when it's not even though everyone else is doing it.

I like inhaler. When I tell rabid non-smokers it's an electronic cigarette they act like the world is going to end if I take another drag. If I say it's my inhaler they give me a 'good for you' response and assume I'm suffering.

Vapouriser works for me as well but it has dope connotations, those chaps have been doing this a lot longer than us.

Funny, because I was just googling the term "vape" and came up with THIS as one of the top hits... Guess I'm not up to date on my methods of smoking mary jane. That kind of sucks. I don't want people thinking I'm smoking weed when I say I'm vaping ya know?? Hopefully it's more of an underground thing and the general public doesn't relate the two.

(And we never --- NEVER -- use "juice".

So telling the people at the farm supply I need a syringe to inject some juice isn't a good idea? 8-o

I plan on asking my sister if I can use my nicotine inhaler inside (I know it doesn't have to use nicotine, but mine will). If I use the word "smoke" or "cigarette" I already know what her answer will be.
I think the worst thing was making some of these look like cigarettes.

lmao! That's good. I feel like some sort of a crack addict when I'm pulling out my little kit to drip in public. Between all the carts, bottles, syringes, and paper towels laying around my desk it looks like I'm up to no good too! I had someone come pick up a vacuum off of Craigslist yesterday and put it all away so he wouldn't think anything..lol.

When I first explained this to my daughter (the antithesis of smoking), I told her it was an electronic cigarette that provided nicotine in a glycerin base that produced vapor similar looking to smoke. I felt that was the long and short of it and she was quite content with this.

I am an e-smoker because I smoke an e-cigarette and that is what I prefer to call myself at this point. Maybe that will change someday...I don't know. As far as I'm concerned, I gave up tobacco, not smoking. I have even caught myself saying I still smoke, just not tobacco. And maybe that's a psychological thing.

If someone were to give me a hard time about it, I wouldn't hesitate to tell them it was an inhaler of some sort for a medical condition. Maybe I'd even say it was a new fangled nebulizer and I needed it for my COPD.....LOL

But under no circumstance would I call myself a "vaper"...or say I am "vaping" to the general public (except for here of course). I'm sure they'd look at me like I had 2 heads!

Interesting. There are definitely some generational and regional issues with some of these terms I guess. A vaporizer is what I have in my bedroom in the winter and that reminds me a lot of this device, actually. An inhaler is what I reach for when I'm having an asthma attack. I would have never in my wildest dreams guessed there was some other connotation for "vaping."

And I also still consider myself a smoker.

But I think personal vaporizer probably describes this best in my view. I think the next time I "whip it out" in public, it will be in a place where smoking is allowed and hopefully I'll convert a few smokers to something more healthy.
