Elaine ...
Did the reporter tell you she would contact you with a heads-up
with specific information as to where and when the show would air ???

Yes, she did. I got the impression that the end of last week was the earliest they thought they could put it all together.

PLEASE, someone jump in if ya disagree

Think about it ... There are very very very good reasons why CBS doesn't
want to interview any Pro harm reduction organization. The ONLY organizations
they are interested in interviewing is the FDA and the ALA ... Go figure.

CBS is NOT interested in investigative reporting ... They aren't looking
for the truth. They already have their article written, just with a few
open blank areas for comments from a few vapers.

Same OLE Same OLE
On one side of the scale the FDA and ALA
On the other side 2 or 3 (even very well informed) vapers

Even our best and most informed vapers going up against a smirking reporter
quoting the FDA and ALA ??? .... Deja vu

Great News?
Yea ... IF the deck wasn't already stacked in the FDA's favor
The table is tilted folks ... the game is "rigged" (yet again)

Would love to hear from members with opposing views with their reasoning

CBS is going to air what maintains an audience for its advertisers, and do it as cheaply as possible, because they are a business that delivers profits by selling an audience to advertisers. It's much cheaper for mass media to rely on "official" assessment like corporate and government PR. It costs more to have journalists investigating all perspectives. It certainly isn't a model practice of journalism, and in no way am I asserting it's ok. It just happens to be the reality of profit-driven mass media.

When news outlets like CBS actually dig deeper into an issue and offer to get a voice from perspectives outside the corporate/government PR, the last thing we need is a lot of people being antagonistic and sounding like conspiracy theorists. If we want to kill the cause, that is a sure fire way. True skepticism never adheres to an opinion, and demands to be convinced by evidence. We need to be pushing the evidence to the front, because it's clearly on our side. The corporate-funded anti-smoking groups will continue to deal in vague terms, and when we can get specific and stand behind that specific data, also with medical opinion, it automatically offers a convincing stance to those who don't know much about the issue.

Did anyone direct CBS to Dr. Michael Siegel at the Boston University School of Public Health?

Yes, I did, but she was more interested in getting a face on camera than in doing a phone interview. I don't imagine this piece had the budget to do anything more than DC area travel.

But she does have Siegel's contact information for future reference.

The news today is just a "Reality TV Show" with a twist.
While this may be true...

The Reality Show becomes much more interesting when the FDA and the Alphabet Soup is confronted.
And when it is confronted by knowledgeable people and good facts, that cranks things up a notch or two.

The fact that CASAA and Dr. Polosa were made available without anyone having to "dig" for facts puts us in a good position.
And a good journalist (and I have to assume all reporters still wish they could be journalists) will take full advantage.

I'll be pretty surprised if this doesn't get some interesting play.
Because the tables can be tilted in many directions.

A friend of mine used to love Rush Limba (the radio conservative) and I always told him that Rush had to fill radio time every day, and still sell air time to corporations. These two facts guarentee that alot of what Rush would say was simply a "gimmic". To fill that kind of airspace with 100% fact, honnesty, and a single mans oppinion while also being entertaining is damn near impossible. Last year my friend Larry met Rush at a dinner party, and Rush told larry almost word for word what I had been trying to tell him. Well Larry came away saying Rush was actually much nicer than he thought he would be, and no longer listens to him on the radio. Larry has told me he misses when he truely belived in every word Rush said. Reality bites hard, and finding your own direction is twice as hard as following a loud mouth. I myself like Rush more now that I know Rush is honnest about his media reporting. Or should I say entertainment. Lets hope with CBS "entertainment" is on our side.
