The wind is doing 45mph and it is almost impossible to feed the horses. Hoping it will die down a bit in awhile. I'll go out with a lantern and throw some more hay.

It's times like this that I'm glad I board Penny. Other times, when the weather prevents me from going to see her, I wish she was close. But when it's horrid out, I'm glad it's not me braving the cold to clean manure and add water to the buckets and toss them hay.

Speaking of wind, it's picking up here, though certainly not the speed Terry and Lizzie are experiencing. I keep hearing melodies, or at least parts of them, in the random notes of the wind chimes. Tonight, it's "The Erie Canal." See Erie Canal Song if you want to hear the song and read the lyrics.

The canal, which is not too far north of here, extends, as the song says, from Albany, NY, to Buffalo, NY. I was recently reading a folklore book, which had songs as well as stories, and it mentioned that the song, "Buffalo Gals," although sung by boatmen on the Mississippi, originated on the Erie Canal. I never knew what Buffalo gals were before. I guess I figured it was something out West. For those who don't know the song and want to hear it, go to Buffalo Gals - YouTube

Sitting down, facing forward.
The weather report from south Jersey is that it could be just a "tad" better. It is fun watching a glacier starting to form here. After the 16" or so of snow, total from three storms last week, yesterday it warmed up to almost 40, then rained. After that, the temperature started dropping and it turned to sleet, then snow. Overnight, we had winds in the 40 to 50 mph range. It's 24 now and everything is covered with a coat of sleet, ice and snow, even our street. I think our town ran out of rock salt two storms ago. It does keep the traffic down to a bare minimum and keeps them from speeding, too much. Now, we're supposed to get another clipper system tomorrow but it supposed to get to around 60 by Friday.

I know "climate change", right? Check history, in 1977 there was a bad winter, Great Lakes frozen over, two foot snow storm in the Carolinas and snow all through the south with very cold temps nation wide. Weather is cyclic. Kind of like having the winter Olympics in the southern most major city in Russia, where palm trees grow naturally, then blaming the warm weather there on "climate change". More like normal climatic variations and a really poor choice of locations for Winter Olympics. Heck, they could have saved money and scheduled the Summer Games at the same time.

Our weather has turned cold again. It was about 9 degrees when I got up this morning, but now it's up in the teens. The forecast predicts some snow, but it doesn't sound like any more than yesterday, less than an inch. That warmer weather we had didn't last long. At least it didn't warm up so much that we got ice. I'd rather have snow.

I saw a story on TV that blamed the bad decision on a Russian gangster who comes from that area. I am sure he is pocketing a lot of rubles from that.

Good stuff, Terry.

I thought the little kids playing music were cute and they were very good.

Good morning peeps.

The wind finally died down yesterday in the late morning and I spent a lovely day with Hubby. He worked on his chainsaws shich he loves and we watched the ice dancing portion of the Olympics.

I fixed the damaged tubing for the front sprinkler system with some help from Hubby. Those tubing connectors are so hard to get on the tubing.

The new dogs are fitting in very well although Willie is still the shy dog, she is looking a little more relaxed.

An Indiana Poem

It's winter in Indiana
And the gentle breezes blow,
Seventy miles an hour
At thirty-five below.

Oh, how I love Indiana,
When the snow's up to your ....,
You take a breath of winter air,
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful,
So I guess I'll hang around.
I could never leave Indiana
Because I'm frozen to the ground!

- Author unknown

but I wouldn't doubt that it was written by a Hoosier this winter!
Just sayin'.

I'm catching up on posts now and waiting for Winter Storm Rex to hit with an inch of freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow. *ack!*

Morning (barely) Volties. Rave, that poem reminded me of a post I saw on a different forum, so I'm copying it here. It gets a bit 'colorful', and I protest some of the opinions, but I can totally understand the attitude. Winter really gets old when it is a constant battle. I never blame the deer though, they are fighting a bigger battle, with elegance, I might add.

Have a great day gang!

Dear Diary:

Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Michigan . It is so beautiful here. The hills and river valleys are so picturesque. I have a beautiful old oak tree in my front yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is truly God's Country.

Oct. 14 -
Michigan is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to walk through all of the beautiful hills and spot some white tail deer. They are so graceful, certainly they must be the most peaceful creatures on Earth. This must be paradise.

Nov. 11 - Deer season opens this week. I can't imagine why anyone would want to shoot these elegant animals. They are the very symbol of peace and tranquility here in Michigan . I hope it snows soon. I love it here!

Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. I woke to this wonderful sight: everything covered in a beautiful blanket of white. The oak tree is magnificent. It looks like a postcard. We went out and swept the snow from the steps and driveway. The air is so crisp, clean and refreshing. We had a snowball fight. I won, and then the snowplow came down the street. He must have gotten too close to the driveway because we had to go out and shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Nature in harmony. I love it here!

Dec. 12 - More snow last night. I love it! The plow did his cute little trick again. What a rascal. A winter wonderland. I love it here!

Dec. 19 - More snow - couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work in time. I'm exhausted from all of the shoveling. And that snowplow!

Dec. 21 - More of that white **** coming down. I've got blisters on my hands and a kink in my back. I think that the snowplow driver waits around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. ********.

Dec. 25 - White Christmas? More freakin' snow. If I ever get my hands on the ***** who drives that snowplow, I swear I'll hurt him. And why don't they use more salt on these roads to melt this crap??

Dec. 28 - It hasn't stopped snowing since Christmas. I have been inside since then, except of course when that "Snowplow Harry" comes by. Can't go anywhere, cars are buried up to the windows. Weather man says to expect another 10 inches. Do you have any idea how many shovelfuls 10 inches is??

Jan. 1 - Happy New Year? The way it's coming down it won't melt until the 4th of July! The snowplow got stuck down the road and the idiot actually had the nerve to come and ask to borrow a shovel! I told him I'd broken 6 already this season.

Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house. We went to the store to get some food and a ****** deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the *****. It did $3,000 in damage to the car. The hunters should have a longer season if you ask me.

Jan. 27 - Warmed up a little and rained today. The rain turned the snow into ice and the weight of it broke the main limb of the oak tree in the front yard and it went through the roof. I should have cut that old piece of **** into fireplace wood when I had the chance.

May 23 - Took my car to the local garage. Would you believe the whole underside of the car is rusted away from all of that **** salt they dump on the road? Car looks like a bashed up, heap of rusted cow ****.

May 30 - Sold the car, the house, and moved to Florida . I can't imagine why anyone in their freakin' mind would ever want to live in the Godforsaken State of Michigan.

Those little ones playing guitar were amazing!

The ice dancing portion of the Olympics and sometimes the gymnastics are the only parts that I've ever really had any interest in. Not a sports person, but I appreciate talent when I see it.

Glad the doggies are doing well! :)

Good morning, all. Happy Presidents' Day. Lizzie, I'm glad to hear Willie is relaxing a bit. Rave, I'm glad you liked the video, and I loved that poem!

Oh no, Sandy, I loved the video! Thanks again.

It's been a quiet weekend. Got some pre-storm shopping done. My driveway has been plowed so that it won't turn into a glacier when all of this freezing rain and sleet hits very shortly. Since I had a full house over the weekend, I got a bit of Cinderella relief. My back is very grateful for that. Yesterday, I made pancakes for the whole clan to top with syrup that was made from the sap of my own trees. I still have sap lines criss-crossing all over my property on the other side of the creek. I have yummy trees! :p

I agree, Q. It's a battle for man and beast when you live in the sticks. But, you learn to make do with grace and a sense of humor or you move back to the burbs where you belong. I feel bad for people that expect a storybook lifestyle when they move away from civilization and then get knocked up the side of the head by reality. For me - it's worth the hassle. But, it ain't easy!

I grew up in the outskirts of a big city, but I always wanted to live on a farm. Where did that come from? And my love of horses? My parents are not the outdoors type. My mom's idea of exercise was to walk around an art museum or to the public transportation. My dad, who had to walk long distances as a child because they were poor and couldn't afford carfare, drove everywhere, even to visit neighbors just down the block.

So when I moved up here, there were some changes of viewpoint. When I lived in Interlaken, there were farm fields all around, and let me tell you -- the fresh country air isn't very fresh smelling when they have recently fertilized the field across the road! And the deer. Yes, I do love seeing them, but they certinly seem to have suicidal tendencies sometimes. It makes driving an exercise in vigilance.

Still, I love living where the country is more accessible, even if I do live in a village. My defense against a lot of the maintenance problems is to rent an apartment, where the landlord has to take care of things like mowing the lawn and plowing the snow. Not to mention fixing anything that breaks, like a leaky pipe.
