I just got back from the barn. Penny was still out with the big herd, not in the front area, but at least the horses were up at the barn. The barn owner is being extra cooperative and nice. She explained Penny wasn't in front because they had just loaded hay into the loft, and the hay elevator was still up, and there was a huge pile of loose hay that had fallen off the bales as they rode up to the loft, and she didn't want Penny to get sick gorging herself on that. I'm OK with that. I figured her reasons when I saw the hay elevator up still.

I groomed Penny on the lawn, and she's losing what little summer coat she had (since I clipped all that long hair that didn't shed out). She's starting to look coppery again, which is nice, For some reason, clipping her made her coat dull and more yellowish, not that auburn color that makes her so striking. It was disappointing to see her coat look dull, but at least she was cooler this summer. I wonder if I clipped her earlier in spring, if the coat would have grown in better. I procrastinated because I had never clipped her before, and she had never been clipped. I went OK when I did it, and next year, I won't be so hesitant about it, but also this spring stayed cool, back & forth, for quite a bit longer than usual. That's my excuse, anyway.

I took nearly everything home from the barn. I plan to give her a bath Thursday, fly spray her well so the botflies don't lay another thousand or so eggs on her, comb out her mane & tail with Cowboy Magic (detangler, and it makes the hair shiny & silky), and hope that she's presentable Saturday morning so as to make a good impression. With my luck, she'll roll in the mud on Friday evening. I won't have time to groom her before her trip to the new place.

I have a rain sheet that she wore maybe once. It's not perfectly clean, but I'd put it on her again before thinking it needs washing. Do you think that's OK? Maybe I should wash it so everything's clean for the new place? I'll see ...

Thursday evening, after my barn visit, I'll bring home her grooming tools and wash them and hope they dry before Saturday. If the brushes don't dry, I have some extras here that I could replace them with.

I'm a "white knuckle patient" at the dentist. It's irrational, I know, but a really bad experience with a broken needle (dentist made a boo-boo and ran it into my bone) in my lower jaw many years ago has left its' mark, I found a dentist with a great "touch". He did some extractions that I never felt but his actual dental work is for the birds. I'm going to try a new one, closer to home rather than 30 miles away, and see how that goes. t least Mrs. Awsum's insurance covers almost the entire cost, except for a small co-pay.

Awsum, Bill was always afraid of the dentist, too, till we found the one we go to. That guy gave Bill laughing gas (nitrous oxide, I think), and then Novocaine, and Bill was happy with that. For a couple of years, Bill had to pay extra for gas when he didn't really need it anymore, till one time, I convinced him to try without it. It was just a small filling, quick and easy. Now he doesn't need gas for normal dental work. Our dentist was great, catering to Bill's fears and reassuring him. And the first few visits, I had to go with Bill and sit next to him while the dentist worked, and he explained what he was doing and dentistry in general to me. He has a great attitude. He said he wanted to be a sculptor, but dentistry takes the same sort of creativity, and he's happy. I liked that, which is why I remember that comment out of all the chatter at those visits when I had to sit with Bill. This is one of the reasons why we still go to this very expensive dentist, rather than someone cheaper. And his work seems excellent. And he hires really good technicians, who I usually see because I generally just go have my teeth cleaned and X-rays when they think it's time to check again for cavities.

Try gas, it may make your knuckles forget to turn white!

I have dentist phobia, it's pretty bad. My teeth were damaged by lots of antibiotics as a child and I paid the price. I was also afraid of getting shots, so when I had to get my first (of many) filling, my Mom told the dentist to try it without the anesthetic. I thought it was just how it was for everyone, suffering through and clenching the arms of the chair, shudder! I had a lot of appointments too, way more than twice a year. I was SO MAD when I found out I didn't have to go through all of that! I'm still kinda miffed, lol.

But anyway, I have tried everything to help me get over my fear of the dentist, one Dr. even had me take valium before my appointments. The gas makes me paranoid, I have to fight the urge to run out of the building anyway, but the one time I tried it, I felt like the dentist was going to kill me. Yeah, I'm a weird one.

I'm looking for a new dentist right now, I'm way overdue and I know I need to take care of it, but I have been putting it off again.

Sitting down, facing forward.
I can't do nitrous, the one time I tried I needed an "air sick" bag. On the other hand, IV valium is great, they could use a jack hammer for all I care with that! I get by with the topical numbing agent and then a Novocain shot. One of the things that bother me a lot is that I know what kind of tools they use, for drilling, scraping and extraction. They would be welcomed by Torquemada.

The one time the dentist gave me gas, he did it just to clean my teeth! It was a new (to me) dentist, and I warned him I'm scared of shots, so I guess he thought I was scared of the dentist, but I'm not. Needles, however, still terrorize me, though less than when I was younger. Anyway, I agreed, and while he was scraping the tartar away, I really enjoyed it! "Yes, get that out! Scrape it all away!" were my thoughts. I really got into it! Crazy me. Well, it was the best time I ever had at the dentist, but I had a headache for about an hour after it, and I left the dentist's office so disoriented that I walked around for a while before attempting to drive home.

I told my present dentist that I can't do gas because of the headache, and he said you have to mix it with air to just the right amount, and that dentist made it too strong. But I haven't tried it again. I haven't felt the need. I have pretty good teeth, and when they work on them, shots do the job. In fact, I've had fillings w/o shots, and I do fine then, too, w/o the anxiety of the needle, but my dentist says the pain makes you salivate more, which makes it hard for him to do his job, so I put up with the shots.

Q, I am pretty sure my teeth were damaged by tetracycline. I had my first major dental work when I was about twelve. I had a terrible dentist as a kid and have been afraid of the dentist ever since.

My front teeth are fine but I don't think I have a single molar that hasn't had work. I finally had four or maybe more pulled about ten years ago.

I have root canals and crowns in most of the rest. I insisted as I wasn't getting re root canaled or any other nonsense.

I was afraid of the dentist, until I was 14. I believe that I told you what happened to me, that sent me to the dentist for emergency treatment. I figured that from that day forward, nothing that a dentist could do to me, would even come close to what happened to me on that day.

Refresh my memory. I don't remember you telling this story, though you may have. Somehow, I missed it.

Yep Lizzie, I had constant ear infections as a baby and young child, thankfully I grew out of that but the tetracycline was really hard on my teeth too. I remember having to skip lunch and walk to the dentist's office 3 blocks away from my elementary school, get a filling, then go back to school. This started about 3rd grade, and it went on for years. All my molars were drilled out with huge fillings until they were just basically shells around a filling. I have several crowns now too. No root canals, *knock wood*. I am a very bad patient for a dentist, I have to be coaxed and I think they just would rather not deal with me. But, I have good insurance so they do like that!

When I was 13 I lost a fight with the monkey bars, taking a bar right in the mouth. I had been running, it was just about dusk, and I didn't notice the low bar. It knocked me flat on my back and I was spitting out little pieces of tooth. It was lucky I had a big hunk of bubble gum in my mouth, lol. But, it left me with cracks running through all of my front teeth, they are starting to fall apart now. The weird thing is, since I stopped smoking, I seem to be having more problems with my teeth. Just doesn't seem fair.

Sandy, I was playing baseball with a group of friends and I was the catcher (no mask). The batter hit the ball and without thinking, threw the bat, right into my face. Two top front teeth were ripped out, along with the gum, a third tooth was broken off at the gum line and a fourth tooth was bent so badly that it had to be extracted. The bone in the top of my mouth, where the teeth were, was fractured.

My dentist was also an oral surgeon and he sent his waiting patients home and worked on me, as soon as I arrived at his office. Two hours and fourteen sutures later, I was sent home, along with a prescription for morphine. The morphine was great, until a week later, my dad threw it out, proclaiming that I had enough of "that stuff". He was right, but heck, I was only 14, I didn't know better. LOL

Yikes, Q, that's awful. :(

I didn't feel any pain, until the next day. I think that I was in a bit of shock, the day that it happened. I walked home from the ballfield and my friends, worried about me, followed my blood trail all the way to my house. My mother stopped the bleeding, by putting gauze on the wound, made a few calls and I was on my way to the dentist.

I'm sorry both Q & Jerry had such injuries. Jerry, your father was wrong. If the doctor prescribed morphine, you should have taken it. When I broke my arm, I worried about the painkillers with codeine in them. I didn't want to get addicted. The doctors all said that if you are in pain and you need it, you won't get addicted. Take it. Somehow, the body doesn't get addicted, if it is in pain, I guess. I took the drugs for weeks, and I didn't get addicted, so you probably would have been fine while you needed the morphine.

Our childhood dentist put penicillin in a temporary filling, and it was already established that I was allergic to penicillin. I nearly died. We switched dentists shortly after that. The dentist we had when I was an adolescent became an alcoholic, and I was really grossed out by the unkempt equipment the last time I went there. He did do good work with a crown on one of my top front teeth that was way out of line.

I was visiting a homepage for my hometown a few weeks ago, and saw people complaining about that childhood dentist, so my experience was not unique, but probably the worst.
