Trit, where are you in Greece? I always think of Greece as about the same climate I experienced in Izmir, Turkey. In summer, it got pretty hot, many days in the 30º C range (which felt to me about like 90º F), but in winter, it hovered around freezing. Sometimes there'd be a little ice in puddles in the morning, but the sun soon melted that, and it was usually above freezing during the day. I saw distant mountains that got snow when we got rain. That's about the same climate as I experienced in Redwood City, CA, which is just a little south of San Francisco, but without all that fog. We could see the mountains that sheltered us from all that coastal fog have snow when it rained where our house was. Once while I lived in RC, it got down to 25º for a week, and everyone there thought they were dying of the cold. I think they said it hadn't gotten that cold for that long for the last 50 years or something like that.

Your nearest hydrogen bomb.
Nothern Greece, Smyrni is far far away to the South, still, they have a pretty cold climate in the winter too.
We don't have a tropical climate, it's the same as yours.

FUN fact: I have no heating yet LOL. :D House was holding up good till now, it started getting chilly. Cannot walk around in my underwear.

I hope to ride Thursday morning. It's been a long time. It'll be slightly warmer, but still pretty cold. A high of 30, and a low of 24. And windy, which should make it feel colder, too. Still, I'm game. I suggested to the boy that we ride about 11, not too early in the morning. I haven't heard back when he wants to meet to ride. Wish us luck. The horses should be high as kites.

We have had heat on since fall. I never walk around in my underwear. I keep the heat at 68º to 70º F, which means regular clothes and a light sweater or sweatshirt.

Too bad about not being able to run around in your underwear, Trit:nun:

We have the wood stove so sometimes it is a bit too warm but this time of year, open the door wide for a few minutes or crack the window open and it is no problem. In fact, we went from 73 degrees to 66 degrees just coming in and out from the chores. Guess we will have to relight the fire now.

Ismir=Smyrni
Smyrni is the old ancient name, it was a greek territory in the old days, that is why Turks claim they have ancient buildings and stuff.
Until the genocide it was Smyrni Greek genocide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No Greek calls it Izmir.

Nea Smyrni= New Smyrni in Athens, has nothing to do with that place.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Come on, Tritium, be a man! I manage shorts outside at 60 and skivvies at 65 in the house.

We've had the heat running, basically at night, since the beginning of November. Our little "auxiliary" gas heater has been getting used to keep things warm most of the time though. Both will be getting a workout until the weekend when it's supposed to warm up again then another cold spell starting Monday. Oh well, it is wnter, and still no snow in the forecast!

I heard it was called Smyrna, which is close. I was aware that the Greeks and Turks had a longstanding enmity. I hadn't known the history, but it doesn't surprise me, now that I've read it. From what I've seen (married to a Turk and living in Turkey for 6 months, though not speaking Turkish very well), I think the Turks are very tough as a culture, compared to Americans. They are ready to fight more when insulted, and they think fighting will solve the problem. They have definite prejudices against certain ethnic groups, and they are fiercely protective of women. But if a woman goes unaccompanied by a man and wears revealing clothing, she is fair game. This is as of 1971, while I was there. They may have progressed since then. I had a friend from England who insisted on wearing miniskirts and was angry that everywhere she went, the men harassed her. My idea was to wear more modest clothes and not be bothered so much. She felt that she had the right to wear what she wanted, and the men had no right to bother her. Maybe, but if you go against a whole culture, you're going to be in trouble. I was in enough trouble just not understanding what the new rules were, much less trying to buck them.

Turkey, at least where I was, on the outskirts of Izmir and then at a summer place on the Agean Sea, is a gorgeous place with weather that is near ideal, but the people are confusing and harsh, IMHO. They were very polite to me, as the daughter-in-law of their friends, but I felt no real warmth. Maybe it's because of a bad marriage, but I have a sort of prejudice against Turks now. I wish I didn't. I hate to be prejudiced against anyone, but like I said, they are tough folks. They believe violence is a good way to make your point. That might is right. That kind of thing.

OK, Trit, so, do you live in Izmir? I don't think so, since you said you were Greek, and live in Greece. Don't you? I'm confused.

That Istanbul thingy isn't the actual name like the one above.
The real name is Konstantinoupolis home of the Byzantine empire.
As you see the only way for some people to get some culture is by invasion or by stealing names like Skopje.

Good morning.

In English, we call the old name for Istanbul Constantinople. I know that and Smyrna for Izmir used to be the names of the cities, but names change. They do it all the time in the US.

Good morning, Peeps.

Seven degrees outside!

SandySu - Culture's can be very different. I can imagine that marrying a Turk might be too different to work out in a relationship:) How long were you married? How did you meet? How long did you live in Turkey? Don't answer anything that seems too personal!

Raven - hope you are well.

Terry - hope you and BF are getting all you wanted accomplished.

Cindycated - Hope you got your computer parts.

Uncle-waiting for your New years eve post:)

Q - How did Christmas with the kiddies go?

My client called last night. Am I coming tomorrow? No, Friday? Oh, I should have called you sooner. Can you come tomorrow?

Now I have to do two full cleaning jobs in one day. Just shoot me. I hope I can do this. If my first client will just get out of the house so I can take it easy on my first job, that would help!

In case I collapse when I get home. I'll guarantee you I won't be up until midnight.

Happy New Years!

What are everyone's plans for New Years Eve?
