    Hello Voties!

Rave your Birdies are so pretty! love your wildlife pics.

Lizzie, I agree with everyone else. Quality of life is better. A happy animal makes for a happy mama. I know its true of me and my Bruno. :)

Its going to be really cold down here for the next few nights, low 20's and high teens. Brrrrrrrrr!

That's cold for down there! But not as cold as here. It's 5º now with a strong wind; tonight, the low will be -2º. Tomorrow, the high will be 7º and the low -1º. Philly should be a bit warmer.

Dogs will be going the way of the dodo, soon, from the looks of this -

That's absolutely amazing!! Robotics have definitely come a long way. I couldn't believe that recovery! When I heard the car in the background, I wondered if it was able to detect and avoid oncoming traffic. Wonder if Spot can vacuum floors or, better yet, do windows? ;)

That robot is just weird. I can understand that people are working on the technology, but geez, that is no dog, lol! Some of the comments were pretty funny though....

We still have about a foot on the ground, it's sort of scrunching itself lower, but not melting. Like Sandy, we are getting a little bit here and there. The surface gets prettied up, but doesn't really add much to the total. It's just the cold, ugh, it's too darn cold!

Here's what we have to look forward too....It's 5° right now, I suppose TWC is afraid to show me. :glare:

    titled_zpsazhtrocg.png

Not much different here. Predicted low tonight-- 0 Friday night-- +4 Saturday night-- -14, Sunday night-- +4 Monday night-- +7

Oh dear. I figured it was frigid up there. It's too cold for my blood here. Right now, it's 11 degrees.

    G'Night all!

    'moanin, Volties.

Our "heat wave" didn't pan out. It was 6 this morning when I woke up, so much for 15 or even 10. The wind was howling all night, too. Woke me up TWICE! Think I'll find something to do inside today. At least it's toasty in the house.

Just the technology to have that robotic dog recover like that is a major step, at least I think so. I'm sure, given a little time, a seeing-eye version could be made. Doing floors might not be far behind and the same for windows. I think I'd be more comfortable with a two legged version doing that, but even those are making major progress, so who knows? "I Robot" might not be all that far into the future. Given that self-driving cars seem to be coming along fairly quickly as well, too.

If we're going to have sophisticated robots, I want one that'll clean the oven!

Good morning, all. It's horribly cold out, but I'll be warm in the car going down to Philly most of the day. Pumping gas will probably be the worst thing on my list. I'm hoping there won't be much snow in the Poconos. It's clear here now, but that can change in a heartbeat.

A robotic seeing-eye dog would probably be expensive at first, but as time goes by the price will drop. The interaction between handler and dog would be missing, but I suspect that could also be programmed into the robot. It would be sort of an evolutionary process. The main point being that it would be possible to do, and you wouldn't have to let it out in the middle of the night, LOL.

It's warmed up to 15 here and the wind has died off quite a bit, but at these temperatures any wind only makes it colder.

    Good morning, Voltchillians,

Sounds like, Zero, SandySu, Jer, Awsum, Raven, Terry and assorted others are freezing their assets off.

I testified at the state legislature yesterday!!!!!!

    I did really good.

First, I asked them if I could give them a hand out that had some information on it. It was a CASAA flyer. They allowed that to be handed out.

I told them how nervous I was to be speaking in public. The chairman was very nice to me.

I started out by complimenting the committee on knowing quite a bit about e-cigs which kind of surprised me. I acknowledged the doctor [whom I didn't really like but who obviously loved being the resident doctor expert] by saying that "I don't like doctors. Of course, doctors are a good thing and you have to see one once in awhile, but I don't like doctors, and I knew if I kept smoking, I was going to be seeing the doctor far more than I want to."

I knew lots of facts and I carefully chose some of the ridiculous statements being made by some of the committee members to rebut. The doctor on the committee kept acting like "We just don't know" what this new fangled contraption might do to your health.

A few key points I made included:

Nicotine, by itself, according to some studies, is not nearly as addictive as cigarettes. Nor is it as addictive as people think. It should not be compared to the addictiveness of .......

Also, the nicotine involved is not all that mysterious. It is made by companies like Johnson & Johnson. The same people that make nicotine for nicotine patches and gum. It is made in India and China and reportedly in the US as well. [Several of the committee members thought that the nicotine seemed mysteriously made. Where does it come from? How do we know its properly made?]

Research is being done and there are plenty of indications that electronic cigarettes are far better for your health than real cigarettes.

There was a quote by an e-liquid vendor that said that e-cigs are not a quit smoking device. I explained to the committee that the guy can't say they are for quitting smoking as the FDA won't allow claims like that to be made by the industry. However, as an individual, I can say that I quit smoking using the e-cig.

I told them my story of being a two pack a day smoker who quit using e-cigs. I explained that I loved smoking. I told them that I was worried about getting short of breath. I was concerned about my husband, who has loved me with all his heart for 15 years. He would be heart broken if I had to tell him I had lung cancer and was going to die. I said "Think about your grandparents, your aunts, your uncles, your cousins. If you do anything to discourage people from quitting smoking by taxing e cigarettes you are hurting them."

I explained that I researched e-cigs and then tried them. I stepped down on smoking and then, eventually, I was down to two cigarettes a day. I decided I could let go of those two cigarettes and have been a non-smoker ever since. That was two years ago.

I told them "What if it isn't 90 plus percent better than smoking? What if it turn out it is 75% better than smoking? It is still better than smoking!"

I did pretty good and the KNBP news people asked to interview me after I was done. Boy, was I surprised.

I managed to recap some thoughts about e-cigs. I told the news lady that e-cigs are essentially the have same ingredients that are in asthma inhalers with the obvious difference instead of asthma medication the device is delivering nicotine. Also, everyone is aware that the state needs to revamp there taxation system but taxes like these were not the answer. This tax would be a small drop in the bucket and not help with the big picture.

Since we were already out in the hallway where the interview happened, we left and went to dinner. We stopped by Nevada Vapers storefront. They are right down town near the Capitol Building. I found out that at the end of the meeting, the committee didn't think taxation was a good idea at this time and were not going to pursue this.

I bought a bottle of e-juice out of sheer politeness. I like my DIY best:) I didn't find any flavor that I thought was that great but I found one I thought was acceptable. I got to try 5 or so flavors. I bought something called "The Jeffe" which is a crème brulee tobacco. The people were really nice and it gives me somewhere to refer people that are interested in vaping.

Or clean hair off of everything, or feed it, or take it to the vet after collecting its urine and/or fecal matter, or clean drool off of the walls, furniture, windows, & ceiling!! I want one ...... after they grow a personality.

LOL Boston dynamics developed these to transfer supplies during the battle on rough terrain.
I don't know if you remember there is already on the market a THING that does that for years, it's called a donkey and it can carry more weight faster on ANY terrain. This crap is only tested on the beautiful landscape of labs and outside the labs.

One bullet (or even a bad wire) and it's out, you can't exactly call it stealthy and energy/weight efficient.
Looks like a shiny waste of money for the army, only contributes to the study of mimicking movement of animals.

There are other more advanced ones but they all look like toys, nothing that will kill us all yet :D

Interesting stuff, Tritium. I knew you'd chime in with some more good ones!

Every new product/machine goes through a developmental stage. The more complex the product, the longer the development stage. Given the complexities in developing a robot, be it a dog or human form, things are moving along. Yes, a bullet or bad wire could disable the dog, or those human robots, but given time and development I somehow think that an armored version could be produced. Practicality is a whole other question, but if you wanted to maximize the effectiveness of human soldiers, for example, using a robotic means to carry equipment might be a good ides. I've also seen small, tracked and wheeled robots, armored, and designed specifically for that purpose. Imagine a robot carrying ammunition, food and water for a platoon or even a couple of soldiers. It would allow them to be able to fight longer and more effectively than if they carried their own food and ammo.

    Hehe!
Yeap, as you say time and money is needed.
A huge problem is armor, if you place it you immediately diminish the ability to carry a load.

It's that middle balancing point that's hard to reach, just like any other design, money is huge too and you need creative and fast minds.
I am doing some stuff now that seems impossible, even i think it's impossible LOL. Time will tell.
