No sign of Tom. Bill & I talked it over this morning, and we think he must be dead. He was old and frail, and going this long without food would probably do him in if something else didn't get him before this. It's interesting that his friend, Jacob, the orange cat, hasn't been here to visit since his disappearance. I think maybe Jacob knows what happened to him and that it's pointless to look here for him. Is that attributing too much reasoning to a cat?

My life is empty now with no animals in it. First Penny, and now Tom. I knew they were getting older and had prepared myself, but that's not the same as going through losing them.

I'm sorry Sandy that you may have lost another pet. I know how hard that is because it's happened to me too but your life isn't empty. You still have your hubby and family members and us here at Voltville. I know it's not the same and doesn't help much but know that we care. Your silence lately tells us how much you are hurting and it makes me very sad. I wish there was something I could do. Come back to Voltville to help get your mind off your loss.

I have to echo Terry's thoughts, Sandysu.

It is so very hard to lose a pet after so many years together. Maybe old Tom wanted to spare you some grief and went off to be alone in his final hours. Sometimes critters do that.

I'm sure Penny and Tom both had wonderful love and care from you.

It is a bit empty feeling when you don't have pets. Perhaps a new pet will find you and need your love and care.

Agreed. You need animal companionship. It is time to look forward instead of backward.

Bill & I decided long ago that Tom would be our last house pet, and I decided long ago that Penny would be the last horse I owned, but that didn't mean I would give up horses. Just last night, Deb (remember her, of the horse portraits?) posted to a local email list that she has some horses for lease, and I might decide to do that, if one of the horses available suits me. I'm scheduled to go to Deb's barn on Saturday morning, anyway, to shoot someone's horse for a portrait she wants me to draw, so maybe I'll talk to Deb about it then. I'm interested in a horse named Baby who I met briefly last winter. He might be more spirited than I want, though. I really am getting too old to fall off anymore. I don't bounce like I used to. But some of the gentler ones might not be up to stuff I'd like to do, either. I'll just have to see what is the best choice.

Good morning, Voltians.

SandySu - That sounds like a good idea if you can find the right horse to lease. Keep us posted!!!!

Well, it is 70 degrees out there and definitely going up. Yesterday's high was 100 degrees. Hubby says it should be hotter today.

I cleaned the horse pen, overflowed the ponds and the critter trough and checked to make sure all my zones are watering properly.

I weeded up front and will try to do that every morning that I can since I am getting a bit behind.

I pruned back some sand cherries that were starting to smother my faucet, timers and a small pine tree.

I also pruned back some poplars up front by 10th St. I then dragged them to the goat pen. The goats love poplar.

I have to go out later and turn on the water to the zone that is in crisis. It looks like it hasn't watered. I noticed it looked terrible yesterday. I watered it for 5 hours yesterday afternoon and I want to do it again this afternoon. I put a new battery in the timer and I am hoping that solves the problem.

I looked over when I was opening the gate yesterday and there was a snake wrapped around the base of a willow tree staring at me. OMG was my first reaction. Then, "Oh, it is a gopher snake." We stared at one another for a bit and then I went through the gate. When I came back out he had already disappeared:)

I'm wrapping up the chores with some laundry before it gets too hot out and then I have a book with my name on it.

Yes, I do overflow the ponds to freshen the water. Also, to keep up with evaporation and the critters drinking from and playing in the ponds:)

The back pond overflows into a galvanized tub filled with cattails and bull rushes. That way I add to the pond feel and the water doesn't go to waste.

I overflow the horse/goat trough into the horse pen since it is good for the mini horses hooves. Otherwise, their feet are so tough and it is hard for the farrier to trim them.

I have one goldfish in the 50 gal pond out front and some mosquito fish in the 100 gal pond in the backyard.

Thanks for the info. I figured it was to freshen the water. The reason I asked is because I now have a frog pond and the water gets pretty muddy. Sometimes mother nature pours enough water in it to clear it up a bit so I was wondering if I should do that too when it hasn't rain for awhile which I hope is soon. We are getting drenched with all these thunderstorms. But then the heat will come back and I'll complain about the heat. I have 19 little frogs in my pond test hole so now it is a frog habitat.

Just so long as it doesn't become a mosquito habitat. Do the frogs help with that? Maybe those mosquito fish Lizzie has. Get them at the larva stage.

I think the frogs or something else has kept the mosquito problem at bay. I see way more fly's than mosquito's. I'm hoping the frogs will help with the fly problem.

Sitting down, facing forward.
I was just out mowing the back forty and helped a box turtle get over the fence. Poor guy seemed to be trying to climb a four foot high fence and turtles are just a tad too short for that. Put him down on the other side and he just kept going like nothing happened at all, like turtles seem to always do.
