Tutoring report.

I started with the boy. He is interested in UFOs, and I printed out something from the Internet about astronauts who have seen them. It's extensive, so he only read the first part. He did pretty well, even though I didn't dumb-down the wording much.

Then he did fill-in-the-blanks from the last words he didn't know. He zipped through that. One word I had used in my sentences gave him trouble: chameleon. But once I started explaining it, he knew about the animal. I think he had heard of it but didn't recognize the written word. He was eager to do another contest word search, since he won the last 2. He was gloating about that, and I said, "Don't gloat," so that's one of his vocab words, too.

During his lesson, his little sister sat by, watching, with a small pad in her hand on which she was writing. Her brother complained she was taking notes about him saying he didn't want to do something. Remember, their dad asked me if they said that? I guess she figured she'd take notes and report him! It was sort of funny, but I told her it wasn't good to be a tattletale. They both learned what that word meant. I tried to differentiate between telling if something one of them did was actually dangerous and harmful and between just plain being a rat. That's a hard one.

They were in a particularly contentious mood today. Not with me but with each other. At one point I told them I don't envy their parents, who have to deal with this all the time. I said, "Maybe I'd just punish you both!" and the boy confirmed that's what happened when there was a fight between them.

Then, as a reward for being a hard worker, the boy wanted a word search contest. I obliged. This time, the girl won. I was glad to see that, since I don't want one of them winning all the time and the other getting discouraged.

Then it was the girl's turn. We read her 2 books from school. One was about weighing things, and the only word she didn't know was "scales." I explained what they were, and finally the girl said, "Oh! Like in the grocery store." So I just now printed out a few pages of all kinds of scales for her. She will look at the pictures and we'll discuss how the different ones work. In keeping with the subject, I said, "Here's a puzzle for you. What weighs more, a pound of rocks or a pound of feathers?" They both guessed rocks, and when I told them to think harder, then they said feathers. I tried to explain, but I don't think they quite got it.

Then they wanted to do another word search contest, and the boy won this one.

Then we did a Mad Libs, and it was time for me to go.

Love the tree, SandySu.

Sounds like the kids are little tattletales. So funny.

Today is a day I need to rest up a bit. I need to do a little weeding out of the needle and thread grass that is popping up and going to seed as fast as it can. The good news is there isn't an over whelming amount this year. I almost have this horrible invasive grass licked. I want to get Wiseguy out of the pen and brush him and give him some carrots. It's trash day tomorrow so I need to do poop patrol and take the trash out. Also, get some watering done.

I have to clean a house tomorrow so much of the day will be resting up.

I'm sorry it isn't spring for everyone yet. I so love when the weather warms a bit and the trees and flowers start blooming. I am thrilled that our landscaping is filling in and looking more mature. The crabapple trees are blooming and some of the fruit trees, as well. Some of the willows are just starting to turn green and the poplars are just now budding along with my golden locust. The mulberries will wait until May to leave out. They are smarter than other trees who take a chance on getting a hard frost by leafing out early.

Time to say good night with another photo. This one's from the other day when I walked at Lodi Point.

Beautiful! Looks like a great sycamore tree for an eagle's nest!

And this is what you call "resting up"!?!? You're amazing, Lizzie. I sure wish I had your gumption.

I wish I had my kind of gumption today, too, but I think poop patrol can wait until another day. Watering is just turning on aand off some valves. I did work on the invasive weeds today but that is about it for me. I think I'll make a few drawings of the new back yard I would like to someday complete:)

I went on a long walk yesterday looking desperately for spring growth. It's finally starting to happen! The day was breezy but warm, and you could smell that rich, moist earth smell that I associate with springtime. I had to watch every step to avoid trodding upon new life coming up from the leaf litter. There are lots of trilliums with no blooms thus far and just a smattering of spring beauties in a few of the sunniest spots. I was accompanied by several of the flying freeloaders that associate me with food. They know who provides the seed and followed me around. The goldfinches are quickly coloring up. Here are some of the photos that I took. Bear in mind that the subject matter was fairly limited.

Flooded sinkholes - One is barely visible beyond the front sinkhole. There is a whole line of 'em cutting down through this ravine and deepening it. The front sinkhole appears much smaller than it is. From the back edge to the front, it's about 30'.

The old and the new (trillium cuneatum and a black walnut)

More emerging trilliums

Gooseberry stalk (Good idea to wear thick jeans in the woods. Just sayin')

Trillium cuneatum

Claytonia virginica (spring beauties)

Raven, when I said "mud" I literally meant mud. LOL Oh, it will dry out, sooner or later, but in the meantime, when I'm out in the woods, I'm not looking up at the fauna and flora, I'm looking down, so I don't step in the mud.

Or - I hope - The "POOP" too . . . ;)

BTW: It seems there is - A Lot of Bathroom Humor - here . . .

Lizzie, I'm pretty sure the poop will wait, LOL. I have to agree, the smell of mud/earth in the springtime is always welcome. If you can smell it, it's not frozen! Just in the last few days we can see the little shoots coming up from my bulbs, soon....... I think something ate my crocuses, I miss those pretty stripes.

Love the pics from everyone, thank you!
