'moanin, Voltizens.

Chunky looks good, Lizzie! I'm betting you'll work with him backing up so you don't get jammed up again. That can be nerve wracking to say the least.

When we were in VA I ended up feeding some cows by dumping bagged feed into a trough. They all made a beeline for the feeding trough when they saw the Geo coming knowing that meant, maybe, food. I felt like Moses parting the Red Sea as I walked up with the bag. They moved out of the way so I could pour the food. I tried to be "assertive" while not "threatening" and it worked well. Unfortunately, we didn't have the camera along and Mrs. Awsum didn't take any shots with her phone.

We're definitely making progress with Leo. One accident yesterday when I wasn't quite fast enough, and that was on a runner rather than the main carpet. Only one potty break overnight, too. He's getting used to the crate and only complains a little when put into it. Being alone with him, that's pretty important because I do have to go out occasionally for little things like food and such.

Your a natural with the cows, awsum. A real farmboy. Sounds like the puppy is doing great!

Congratulations, Awsum, on your new pup, and Lizzie, on your new horse. The pics are great, and it was fun, Awsum, to finally see your face.

Lizzie, the best way to put the horses together is to pasture them near each other so they can look over the fence and get used to the presence of the new horse. After this gets to be ho-hum for them, then let them sniff noses, then take the meekest of the minis and put him in with Tanka. When that goes OK, add the other. The first time you make new combinations, you and hubby should stand around with halters and lead ropes, ready to break up a fight, if one should develop, but a little kicking out and squealing is OK, as long as it doesn't get violent. They will probably be fine together.

So, probably Pony and Tanka and then add little Wiseguy the boss into the mix. It's sort of subtle but Wiseguy owns the food so I think he is the bossiest.

Lizzie, you didn't name him Wiseguy for no reason.

This time change is driving us nuts. Why can't we stay on "Savings Time" or "standard Time" year around. I already struck the colors and one camera is already on IR and it's only 5PM. I know, it's light earlier but so what? The hours of daylight are still the same. I remember reading, somewhere, that traffic accidents go up with the return of "Standard Time" because it gets dark earlier, people on the way home from work.

I agree, Awsum, and every year I have gone on a rant about how stupid it is. I can't think that anyone really thought they were "saving" daylight. I think I read somewhere it was for the farmers, but they can get up at dawn, whatever the clock calls it, and their animals suffer because they don't understand why feeding and milking times have changed. The whole idea is crazy and should be abolished, IMHO.

Oddly, I believe it was Ben Franklin that originated the idea of Daylight Savings Time. I can't understand the logic for the life of me. If they'd just leave it alone. The human being has a circadian rhythm that wants to stay the same and changing the clock messes that up.

Thankfully, no more political ads on the tube or radio, at least for a few months until the primaries again.

Here's the lowdown on Daylight Savings Time. Franklin did have a say in it, but this article said he was joking, and he didn't actually start it, the world wars did. And I was wrong. It wasn't to help the farmers; they opposed it. I guess I remembered something about farmers and got it wrong. So, for the curious, here's the link: The History of Daylight Saving Time

Twilight Zone
I always liked dst, especially when I worked. It gave me time in the evening to do a lot of things after dinner. One year during an energy crisis they left it at that and it was great. I don't mind getting up in the dark and going to work but getting home and having the extra hour was great. I'm in full agreement about the changing being not so nice though. If it were to be left one way or the other I'd prefer it to be dst. Just my $.02

Good morning, Voltmaniacs.

I'm going to town with a friend today. Maybe we will stop by Tractor Supply and or Cal RAnch to see what kind of panels they have at what price.

I've been giving a lot of thought to what to do about the horses sleeping/bad weather arrangements. I''m considering just having a separate shelter and pen set up about 8-12 feet from the first pen.. It would be off to the right side of the current pen and I could still see the goats. If I did a 12x12 shelter with no stall front [just open in the front] then I would have the option of putting any of the horses in there or both the small ponies in there at the same time. The cheaper option would be to make a mini horse sized shelter of 8x8, still open in the front and using mini horse sized corral panels.

The cheapest option is to make Wiseguy be in there by himself [although he would certainly be able to see his friends] and do a 2x6 rail fence and get an even smaller shelter [a calf hut would work].

The separate pen would make it easiest to set up another heated water bucket since I would only have about 10- 12' of space to protect the horses from walking on top of the electrical extension cord. And none of the horses could reach the cord through the panels.

I'm going to go up to see Hoofbeats in Fallon to price out my options there. I can''t go until tomorrow.

'afternoon, Voltaticalytes.

Aren't pets fun, Lizzy? The bigger they are, the bigger the work and the bills.

Fall is definitely here and the coolness is in the air. I've got to get out and harvest the next leaf crop before it gets too deep for the mower to handle, and they're falling like leaves (irony can be pretty ironic). Problem is what do I do with Leo for that day? I can't, in good conscience, leave him crated all day so it'll have to wait until Sunday when Mrs. Awsum is home. She's off tomorrow for Veteran's Day but I've got to make a Costco run, we're too low on too many essentials.

Leo is doing a lot better, only one potty break at 3AM this morning and down to one, tiny, accident on the carpet yesterday. He's getting to know his name and definitely know what I mean when I say "NO". That one he learned really fast. Next up is getting him used to the leash.

Good afternoon, Voltmaniacs.

Glad your puppy is potty training nicely! awsum

After some thought and consideration, I decided the best idea for the new horse set up is.....a separate pen with a large shelter but within 20 feet of the first pen. Shifted way to the east so I can still glimpse my goats and see my mini and pony in the old pens. I'll have to work out the logistics of the heated buckets like how much extension cord do I have and how much will I need. And I will have to buy another heated bucket but I am excited. The guy wants to deliver my horse shelter and panels next week but I told him he might have to do it the next week on aMonday or a Tuesday when Hubby is home since I don't want to have to carry the stuff off the truck.

Good morning, Voltmaniacs.

I've had a very horsey weekend. I got my first riding lesson. So fun. I've played with the new horse. He is wonderful. Pony Baloney has turned into a turd. I think what happened is he spent too much time with his buddy Wiseguy and now both horses think they can out run me and out think me. I spent an hour yesterday keeping them apart by chasing them when they hung together and then letting them rest when they split apart and stood separately. Then, I ran Pony around until he would stop and come towards me. Then, I got him to stand with me. Then, I let them all rest up for the day.

I separated them by putting Wiseguy in the shelter pen. Pony stayed out back. After Pony calmed down, I went in and basically chased him down until he decided resting up near me was a good deal. I'll work with Pony Baloney this week and if he improves, the horses can spend their nights together and be separate during the day for awhile.

Another fall morning here with frost on the pumpkin and everything else for that matter. I spent yesterday afternoon harvesting the second crop of leaves out of the back yard. The rough total for the year, so far, is 5 cubic yards of mulch and still lots more to "harvest". Thankfully, it compacts down with time and I'm going to try turning it over to hasten the process a little.

I think I've finally gotten my weight going in the right direction. To lose weight either one of two things, or maybe both things, need to change. Cut the calorie intake or increase the calorie output. I'm doing a little of both, cutting portions and snacks and adding lots of extra activity with Leo being around. Sometimes I think we mis-named him. Should have named him Taz, for Tasmanian Devil. He can be so sweet and nice but there are times when anything and everything in reach becomes a chew toy. So far we've gotten him to stop chewing on our clothes and shoes, but anything else, other than his toys, is still a project in progress. He seems to "frenzy" as he fights falling asleep.

Walking him is a bit of a challenge because he likes to grab an acorn, acorn cap or stick and chew on it. I don't think the sharp pieces can be very good for his digestive tract so he has to be watched like a hawk and more than once we've gone "fishing" in his mouth to get something out. He is doing pretty well on the leash and he will be visiting the vet, for the first time with us, later this week. A momentous occasion for him I think.

Good morning Volties. Went up to Daytona Saturday for a hot dog fest at a club I'm in and a potluck dinner after Church yesterday. Didn't have to do much cooking but probably going to pay for it on the scales. Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow we may diet.

Love potluck.

Wouldn't mind a puppy pic, awsum:)
