Time for the tutoring report.

When I got to the restaurant to pick up the kids, their mom showed me a report from school for the girl. I guess it's a modern-day report card. The girl has improved, but her weak points are reading and conversation, which I knew. Also, she has these little, simple story books from school that she's supposed to read, one a day, so we need to read them every time I tutor. We read 2 today, so I guess that was to catch up. She read the books easily. The only word she had trouble with was "frosty," so next time, we'll sing "Frosty the Snowman." The boy and I knew the song, but neither of us remembered the words. I printed out the lyrics from the Internet this evening.

Then she read a poem I had printed out.

I worked a little with both kids on the th sound, which they have trouble forming. Even the girl is getting it now, though.

Then we joined forces to do the letter E in the alphabet book. The kids wanted to look ahead, and I tried to keep them from it so they will have some anticipation for the next page.

The girl did a word search while the boy read about dugongs. I didn't know what one was, so I found out and printed something out. They live around the Great Barrier Reef, which is where we read about them, and they are a lot like a manatee. The boy read that and we got some words to learn.

Then he did a word search, too, and he even finished his before his sister found all her words! I mentioned to his mom that his main problem is giving up when he has to work hard at something, like a word search, and I guess he took it to heart. He was a lot more cooperative and tried harder today.

When the word searches were finished, it was time for me to go.

Next lesson, I have the climate change article for the boy to read, "Frosty" for the girl, and worksheets and word searches using the words they didn't know in today's reading.

Great vids y'all! That first one made me choke up a lil, Terry. That was when country music still could choke me up... I miss the 90's.:glare:

Yeah, the song was a bit sad because Westfall had just lost her day a few weeks before the competition. I still like country but don't listen to it as much anymore.

Well, Terry, I guess it's catching. It's raining here now. At least it's not snowing, though we probably haven't seen the last of that, either.

Ah, that's good. At least it isn't snowing. Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny and no rain forecasted in the next few days. Here's hoping we all get some nice weather for a change. :toast:

Duct tape is the poor man's tool. I'd be lost without it. :p

Onto my drawing. First I'd like to say that my first attempt at color didn't have the impact that I was hoping for. I need to get a darker blue. Also the snow is light blue in my drawing but it shows gray in the photo. I tried to bring out the blue in photoshop but nada.

Baby%20Penquin%20compare.jpg

Materials used:

Graphite powder for the baby's fur smudged with a stump.
Dark charcoal for the head.
Light blue pastel stick for the sky, blended with a cotton ball.
Light blue pencil for the snow, similar to Very Thin.

Dang, I'm gonna have to go watch Happy Feet again now.
This looks awesome, Terry. So cute! What do you think they're talking about? Where's the water cooler?

I need to order some flavors from OneStopDIYShop. So far:
TFA: Irish Cream & Kahlua (for B52. Couple drops of orange cream for the Grand Marnier though), more Pie Crust (for blueberry pie), Acetyl Pyrazine (for cake)
Lorann: Cheesecake, Cream Cheese Icing (haha just the basics for now)
I'm so bummed that they don't carry Cap's Vanilla Custard. I'm completely out. They carry a lot of brands that I need, but flavor selection's kinda limited on a lot of them.

Do you guys have any favorites I can add? Wanna make the most of the $5 shipping.

...

Oh, man. I just can't get enough of this kid:

OMG! I can't say what I'd like to do with that brat. Sheesh!

You are ordering flavors that I've never even heard of. I can't help you with your list but I think I have some cap van cust that you can have. I'll have to check in the morning. I'm in bed now. Let me know if you want it if I have some. I'm pretty sure I do.

You should save that for rave when you see her - it's one of her favorites. I can get some next time from HDV or cap - just being too cheap to order from multiple places right now. thx tho.

Sitting down, facing forward.
Rave, the camera does have an adjustment for IR cut sensitivity but I haven't fooled with it yet. It's set to "maximum" sensitivity if I read the instructions correctly, a problem when the instructions were written by someone with English as a second language. I'm still fooling with "fine tuning" the motion detection to try to eliminate false triggers. I think that blue effect was a result of the snow field, natural lighting and the IR illumination working with/against the filter. It only happens at sun up with a snow field, so it isn't much of a problem and the detail of the view is still there.

Awww - Thanks Uncle.

Yeah, she said they were kinda like oil pastels but not as oily. I want to try them for backgrounds but it was $20 for 12 colors and I just came from the dr and have to schedule physical therapy again so I'm broke this month. That darn Rave gave me her tendonitis in both my wrists. :glare:

Oh jeez - sorry. Didn't know it was contagious. ;) What does the doc recommend other than physical therapy?

That is one kid with a SERIOUS lack of respect for his elders! I had enough of him about 15 seconds into the conversation!! How on earth could his parents let him get away with that? They'll regret it when he's a teenager. Just sayin'. :grr:

I gotcha. It takes time and tweaking. Mine are all set at about 70% sensitivity. I still get some false triggers if a snowflake or moth dances around long enough and close enough to the camera though. I'd be happier if there were something that I could adjust to get it to ignore spiders dancing on the lens. A spider smaller than 1/4" ends up looking about the size of a mac truck. That is not .... aesthetically pleasing to me. You'll find that spiders are attracted to the camera(s) because bugs are drawn in by the IR.

AND - Here I thought they were having a "Romantic" conversation . . .

A close up of a spider on the camera would be a nightmare to me. Ackk, I really hate spiders. They are so scary and evil looking. Especially black widows.

Good morning peeps. I'll have to stop by later and tell you how it went with Nevada. I'll give you a hint "YeeHaww" we are going to the rodeo.

34 degrees this morning. Loving it. I really must get a few things done today.

Penguins are kind of snotty in a sweet way, don't you think. He's probably saying "Where's the pizza you promised me?"

Rave, what software are you using for your cameras? I'm using Blue Iris and it's pretty flexible with a web server, SMS/FTP/yadayada. The motion detection section is pretty complex as well with contrast adjustments, target size adjustments, hot zones, multiple detection profiles for each camera and scheduling. By the time I get through playing with everything and getting it "just so" it'll probably be time to replace the camera.

The bugs aren't out here, yet, but I can see dust, or whatever, blowing around at night. Snow and rain both drive it nuts at night. They show up so well under IR and basically cut the view to useless.
