Sandy, I'm not bilingual. I dabble in Spanish and I dabble in French. My grandparents, my uncles and aunts and my parents were bilingual. When I was young, I was learning both English and French, but then my family moved to an English speaking town. My mother used to speak to me in French, but my dad refuses to do so. I wish he would.

I learned a little more French than Spanish in high school, but it's still at the level where I couldn't have a real conversation. And I started learning Turkish while I was living in Turkey for 6 months, but I never got too far in that, either. I forget a lot of Turkish now, so many years later.

I wish your dad would converse with you in French, too. Knowing more than one language is something I envy. Can you find other French-speaking people to converse with? Why won't your dad? Do you think he's forgotten a lot of it? Like I did with the Turkish? My grandmother told me her grandmother came to America not speaking a word of English. She spoke German. When she died, she didn't remember a word of German! How sad!

True but it would help if we knew which world you were referring to.
It's all the same world to me, Terry. Whether I meet a person on the internet or face to face, it's no different as far as I am concerned. I have a close friend that I met on here and that I talk to on Facebook. We have never met in person, but we are still close friends. She and I hope to meet face to face someday and I hope that we both have the opportunity to do that.

You're missing my point. You said you met Lis GF. You didn't say you met her on FB. So to us it sounded like you met her face to face. Kapeesh? ;)

My Dad's mother, my grandmother spoke very little English. She was my only relative who wasn't bilingual. Because of that, my dad's first language was French, he learned English later on. He is still fluent in French...Canadien French, not Parisian French, but he has always said that this is America and English is the language. He only spoke French with his mother and with those who didn't speak English.

I bet you know caballo. :) Not sure about the spelling.

You spelled it right, and I know it means horse. But pero means dog, and simpatico is a word I always liked. And cerveza means beer, and salida means exit, and puerto means door, and consado means sleepy/lazy. That's about all I can remember of my Spanish. Oh, yes, colors, like rojo and azul. That's it. Oh, and peligrosso means dangerous. I learned that from bilingual subway signs in NYC. they said something about the train tracks being dangerous. I learned more Spanish in NYC than when I lived in California. Go figure!

Long-distance love! What a pain! Syracuse is sort of near me. Maybe 50 miles away or a bit more. Tell us about her. What does she do in Syracuse? Are you ever going to visit her? If you do, you have to go to the Dinosaur Bar-B-Que! It's fantastic, but the lines can go around the block. It's worth the wait, and you can meet interesting people while standing in line. See Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

until now it is just a web meet, the rest is on the way, she is coming to Miami in July, then i will be able to tell

Dear Terry, it doesn't have to be a face to face meet, for it to be real. Facebook friends are real, forum friends are real, in my opinion and in many others opinion.

But if Lis wants to do something drastic like getting married to her. I think face-to-face is important. Lots of face time!
