Yes, humans do have an impact on the land, but humans are also part of the ecosystem. Why a dam built by a beaver for the purposes of the beaver is OK is different than a dam built by humans for the purposes of humans often eludes me.

I think it's obvious that humans have thoughtlessly ruined a lot of the environment. They have a bigger impact on the land than animals do, so they have to be more careful of the consequences of their actions. I'm not saying all human construction is bad, but if thought isn't given to what will happen because of it, then it can have very bad results. Think about how heating with coal polluted the air in the 1800s, and just recently, humans are starting to be aware of how what they do can hurt the environment, which includes hurting humans. I'm somewhat comforted that nowadays, people have started to realize this, and I think the world is actually a cleaner place than it was when I was a child.

Thanks, Wuzz.

I'll ask Hubby a few questions about our subfloor and such and then I will tell you the kind of subfloor.

They actually make the tongue and groove pine in several widths but I thought the 5 1/2 inch yellow pine planks would kind of have a ranch feel to them. The pine is unfinished. I would have to sand and stain. Hubby wants to finish with oil and I want to finish with spar varnish:)

Some of the laminates look great but most of them that I have cleaned for clients don't clean up well, IMHO. I need something that will withstand the occasional dog or people accident:)

One of my clients have bamboo at their house and it always looks streaky after cleaning and it shows the dog dirt pretty badly. I've tried numerous cleaners. Maybe it is because it is such a light color. I would stain or buy a medium brown color for whatever wood floors we do.

I definitely need something I could damp mop.

I had old hardwood floors in my place in Las Vegas. I used to damp mop once in awhile and they seemed to do fine.
I would never buy flooring that wouldn't pass the Stiletto test - I don't ever wanna live in a house where people have to take their shoes off, but I also wouldn't wanna worry constantly about scratches, gouges pitting, etc...and yes, sometimes I DO wear Stilettos. For me, pine would be too soft. Sure, you can sand it down, but you can only do that so often, and it wouldn't be long before you start getting hills and valleys. Maybe you should think about tile for the traffic areas (easiest to maintain IMO), not necessarily with wood effect, maybe travertine effect or something neutral - I'm talking the ones that go on sale at Lowes/HD - then have one very special room or two for really nice hardwood flooring. Tile's really easy if you use epoxy grout and make your lines as thin as possible.

My dad's house has really nice oak flooring throughout the upstairs (except kitchen and bath), but it's in really crappy shape. When I was thinking about redoing it, I was looking into hardwax oils (like Pallman's, Rubio Monocoat, etc.). But then my brother did a really stupid thing and got everything BUT the bedrooms carpeted (talk about bass ackwards ), so that was the end of that.

My personal taste is super industrial (think WAREHOUSE), so my next flooring will probably be polished concrete. haha then recycled leather flooring for the bedroom. People always feel compelled to rub my leg every time I wear leather pants - maybe it'd feel good under my toes.

I was unloading a 53' freight trailer the other day and admiring the floor in it. It had scuffs, scratches, gouges and virtually no finish. It was distressed to the point I couldn't identify the species of the wood. Sure would look good in a rustic style living/family room with nothing but a little cleanup and wax or maybe just buffing. Some of the most expensive floors I've ever done were distressed and hand hewn. Old warehouse floors that have had stuff dragged across them for a century and never been finished are some of the nicest I've ever seen. Pine is soft and will get it's heritage rather quickly but it sure is beautiful. Our home is country rustic. If I were going to put in hardwood it would be #1 common full of knots, mineral and other rough characteristics. Just my personal taste. I've installed some floors that when I looked at them I wondered why they didn't just buy plastic.

What a complete difference. When I wore leather pants, people seemed to feel more comfortable if they were at least a few yards away.

I suspect yours looked a whole lot nicer than mine. ;-)

I would almost prefer that. I'd have complete strangers feeling me up sometimes. I draw the line at knees though.
I have a few, but my favorite pair is Banana Republic black kidskin, $7.49 from Goodwill. ;)

One of my favorite floor materials is simple blocks of 2x4 stood on end. Looks great when smooth finished, strong as concrete and easy to walk or stand on. Just don't let water get to it! It's amazing how much weight expanding wood can lift, as in hundreds of tons!

With few exceptions water and unprotected wood don't mix well after the tree has been cut down. :D

Hiya Volties! I went to VapeXpo today and had the pleasure of meeting a Voltie in person! Our little hedgehog, dwsizme! She is cute as a button and we had a good time yakking it up in the fog filled rooms. I told her she is missed around here, she might pop in again now and then. I had been thinking of skipping it this year, the past 2 years I had to go alone, but man, I'm really glad I went. It is MUCH more fun with a buddy! The smoke alarm kept going off and everyone would cheer, too funny.

Had so much fun. Never went to one of these expos before. When I walked in and saw all the fog it made me laugh out loud. How cool. Q is right, so much vape in the air the smoke alarms kept going off. That was funny. I bought a bottle of juice, a new tank, got 2 bottles of juice for free and learned a lot. One lady had one of those new isticks (I think they are called). I want one.
Glad I went. :vapor:
And it was really nice to meet you in person finally, Q. :) You are as cute as a button, too!
