We have an African Grey. He talks alot. I've had cockatiels and a couple conures (they screech!). Birds are fun, but messy - oh, you're right - I just got that one....PITA for sure (had to think out the letters

!
What's a toucanette. Never heard of that one.
Blue and Golds are beautiful!!!
Birds are fun, and they can be very messy. The messiest bird that has ever lived under my roof was Schnoz. He was a beautiful toco toucan. The company that I worked for at the time purchased him as a mascot to promote their new product: the Toco 2000 PCB Design System ... which never quite made it. The bird was photographed intensely, went to one trade show, and then came home with me.
He was stunningly beautiful. If you click the thumbnail picture, you can see him a little better.
Unfortunately, Schnoz was a victim of the same exotic animal hunger that many people seem to have. He was kidnapped from his Brazilian rain forest home. In the process, his wing was broken. It never did heal correctly. Probably because he didn't get veterinary care. He was then fed monkey chow instead of the balanced diet that a toucan needs. He was in a tiny cage in a pet shop in Chicago when the company I worked for found him.
When I took him home with me, I ditched the cage. Instead, I made him a spiral staircase of perches. At the top, was his food and water. At the bottom was a sunlamp. In the morning, he would hop down to the lamp, facing it; and he would spread his wings and warm his front. Then, he would turn around and warm his backside. Invariably, his tail feathers would touch the lamp producing a curl of smelly smoke.
He was free to roam the entire room. That was the messy part. Toucans are largely fruit and insect eaters. He would hop to my headboard and bark at me until I paid attention to him. When I did, I had to watch my nose. Birds "bill" each other in their interactions. The only "bill" that he could find on me was my nose. His bill was 10" long, and serrated like a steak knife.
It always seems that the animals that come to live with me are thieves. Schnoz was no exception. One day, my daughter left a ham sandwich and a glass of milk in the room. We left the room for a few minutes. When we returned. The ham was gone from the sandwich. Much of the milk was gone too. Schnoz was on his perches doing his "oscillating electric fan" routine (moving his bill from side to side). I could just about hear him say "Nope - I didn't do it!"
Toucans can be fairly affectionate, but he had never been overtly so. I woke one morning to find him snuggled under the blankets with me in my bed. He was lethargic. I got him in to see the vet immediately. He was diagnosed with hemochromatosis. This was caused by having been fed monkey chow for far too long before I adopted him. His body was unable to eliminate the excesses of iron in his diet. Even after days of me giving him injections per the vet's instructions, his liver eventually failed. I'll always miss that goofy bird. He's the only bird I've ever bonded with.
