Don't take the internet personally.
;)
The "China uses inferior materials" is an internet myth, spread by people who have no idea about the costs of the common metals used to make mods, or how a business actually works.

None of these mech modders can get a utility patent on any of these devices because by design, it's a flashlight.

The best they can do is register their logo and name.

None of the current modders invented anything, they just copied and modified existing designs.

That's why we call them mods.
"Modified flashlight".

If someone has a product that can be cloned and retailed for 1/10th the price of the authentic, who exactly is ripping who off?
The way to bust the "china only makes crap products" myth is reeeeeally simple... Go flip over stuff in your home and look how much of it says "Made in China"... Im guessing 50-70%[emoji14]

For someone who grew up on predominantly American made products when China was just selling cheap tourist souvenirs, that logic isn't very convincing nor compelling.

But China has come far. Turns out I bought a water pressure washer a couple of years ago from Northern Supply Co that had a Chinese clone Honda engine on it. It just.stopped.suddenly and without warning one day while using it and it was just out of warranty. Normal engine combustion had detonated a hole in the top of the cylinder !!!

You see, the Chinese are WONDERFUL at cloning/copying stuff. Just wonderful. But, they apparently have no idea about metallurgy and maybe other stuff. But they make wonderful copies. Could fool a ton of folks.

I'm still anti-clone on principle. But recognize there will perhaps always be a market for clones or non-deceptive counterfeiting. Just like there will always be a market for (deceptive) counterfeiting. Might not like that, but so what? There will always be a market for that. Lots of things on this planet may not be to your liking. I.E. young people/kids are going to vape regardless of what laws are in place. Sorry, dem da breaks. Could name a whole lot of worse things, that will probably be with us for a long time to come.

I just like having principles and a good argument to back them up. Even if I recognize that we live in a shared reality where nothing that is perceived to be forbidden/illegal is likely to change (on principle) anytime real soon.

I think this was brought up once in this entire conversation, and I think it's important to bring up again as a matter of distinction, and that is the difference between cloning an item and counterfeiting it. Clones I can understand, when it's advertised as such and just enough different from the original as to be obvious. But what fries my fortune cookies is outfits counterfeiting goods and pawning them off as the real McCoy product. :grr:

I can understand that upsetting you. But part of the point I see in this thread and the point I made in my post is it really doesn't matter if it upsets you. There will still be a market for it. Sorry if you don't like that fact.

No, I get what you're puttin' down. ;) There are some things in this world that are not going to change, and human nature is one of them. As long as there is a demand for something, there will be a supply.

Yup... and it's so insidious, most people have no idea how much it affects all the crap we buy from them. Does anyone remember a few years back when it was reported that we have guided missile systems found to have counterfeit Chinese electronics in them? No, you probably don't. That's because the implications of that fact are just too scary to allow the media to go mainstream with that story. If our military can't even control Chinese counterfeiting in the weapon systems they buy, who can?

LOL @ possibly the largest and oldest civilization on the planet can't tell one metal from another...

A major competitor in that export market.

Have you looked up the price of a replacement Honda motor for that tool?

I'd bet my granny's comfy, cozy, warm, winter socks right off her feet that that motor will cost you double to triple what you paid for that pressure washer.

Tecumseh, too.

Hell, Briggs and Stratton will probably run you close to, if not twice what you paid for it.

Sounds to me you likely got what you paid for. Not a theory I adhere to strictly.

I much prefer "a fool and his money are soon parted".

Truth be told (although this may be less applicable every day), most people would be dumbfounded at the sheer number of American companies selling a quality Chinese manufactured product under the guise/facade of their "American" name.

But they PAY FOR AND INSIST on better materials and quality control.

For the record: I have clones that are better than their originals. (And yes, I have both and had to finish machining the original)

And: I have originals that are better than their clones. (And yes, I have both. Both are equally functional and bulletproof. Just the original is better machined and the parts fit and move smoother.) But the OG is around $200.00 whereas the clone is $30.00.

Though, in this case, the $30.00 clone is more likely the culprit of price gouging, believe it or not.

Not counterfeit - Chinese sourced. Public Fear and Panic tactics to create more regulations and control manufacturer compliance(think BT/BP) Sound Familiar?

Government low bid contractor goes to Lowball supplier who goes to
Lowball(chinese) Manufacturing for Lowest priced product at largest margin, Recouping Bid losses and improving finances.............until some one along the way finds out and figures out how to use it against said Low bidding company, for personal gain. Enter regulations and company (X) cashing in.
Sound familiar?

Pardon me - eyes open
