Regulation against tobacco Harm Reduction is a discriminatory attack against the poor and mentally disabled.

Smokers in poorer social groups also tend to start to smoke at an earlier age: 48% of men and 40% of women in routine and manual occupations had become regular smokers by the age of 16 compared with 33% of men and 28% of women in managerial and professional occupations.2 Given the disproportionately high prevalence of smoking among people with serious mental health disorders, it is likely that a particularly high proportion of this population will die from a smoking-related disease. A 17-year prospective study in Finland, for example, found that having a mental disorder predicted an elevated risk of death from cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and suicide.23 The same study also demonstrated an association between schizophrenia and mortality from respiratory disease, which the authors suggest is also likely to be explained by smoking. 10.6

The fundamental argument of this report is that this current situation is perverse, unjust and acts against the rights and best interests of smokers and the public health. Harm reduction has the potential to play a major part in preventing death and disability in the millions of people who currently smoke and who, in the context of exposure to currently available drivers and supports to cessation, either cannot or will not otherwise quit smoking. These smokers have a right to be able to obtain and choose from a range of safer nicotine products (Chapter 11), and they have a right to accurate and unbiased information to guide that choice. . .

Are Electronic Cigarettes Dangerous for You?
While the dangers of electronic cigarette smoking are still being investigated the initial research has been very positive. The biggest health advantage electronic cigarettes have over tobacco cigarettes are that electronic cigarettes do not have all the carcinogens created by burning and inhaling tobacco smoke. Electronic cigarettes create vapor which make it healthier than smoking.

“It’s time to be honest with the 50 million Americans, and hundreds of millions around the world, who use tobacco,” Dr. Rodu writes. “The benefits they get from tobacco are very real, not imaginary or just the periodic elimination of withdrawal.

“It’s time to abandon the myth that tobacco is devoid of benefits, and to focus on how we can help smokers continue to derive those benefits with a safer delivery system.”

Recent hype about the increase of nicotine poisoning is just that, hype.

Another way of putting that: The number of accidental poisoning reports related to e-cigarette fluid increased from about 338 in 2012 to 1,351 in 2013. None of these poisonings was fatal, and most (73 percent) were not serious enough to require hospital treatment. In 2012, by comparison, 311,347 poisoning reports involved analgesics, 221,314 involved cosmetics, 193,802 involved cleaning substances, 96,997 involved anthistamines, 88,694 involved pesticides, 68,168 involved vitamins, and 49,374 involved plants. So if "e-liquids pose a significant risk to public health," as Richtel says, the risk posed by common products such as aspirin, window cleaner, and bug spray is gargantuan.

So far, evidence suggests that e-cigarettes may be safer than regular cigarettes. The biggest danger from tobacco is the smoke, and e-cigarettes don't burn. Tests show the levels of dangerous chemicals they give off are a fraction of what you'd get from a real cigarette..
