This is what I've been saying all along. Use thumbnails or links.

IF your having to download the whole video (without clicking "play") than it sounds like a setting somewhere that could be fixed since this is NOT how most people see youtube (or other) videos embedded. Sure it has to pull/download the video thumbnail image but I'm not sure that's much more bandwidth intensive than an equally sized picture.

Here's a test, roughly time how long this page with photo takes to load: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/sandbox/293611-test-photo-load-time.html#post6002095

compared to this page with the same image but this time as a video thumbnail: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/sandbox/293613-test-video-load-time.html#post6002111

For ME they the photo loads in 2-3 seconds, while the video page takes 3-4 (I know, not scientifically accurate but an embedded video DOES take me a second or so longer to load since it has to also load the embedded video player, and maybe youtube is just slow sometimes?).

Strange, I don't have as much trouble with pictures loading as I do with videos. Pics sizes are a lot smaller than a video size in terms of megabytes and gigabytes. If all I had was dial-up, I would not be on this forum. I don't have that kind of patience.

but it's only loading a preview of the video ..........

Have you tried disabling your flash plug in? Whatever it is about large posts that's slowing things down for some people make it sound (to me) like it's causing your browser resource issues. Disabling the flash plug in is just one way to test one of your potential resource issues.

It's more the plugin than anything - the actual resources pulled to show the preview aren't much more than pulling a jpg until you click play and it starts streaming then.

It depends on how nice youtube is playing. Every little resource drain adds just slightly to the load. There's not one big "I got it". Couple videos gone viral on a given day = youtube busier, fetches slower. Large thread = a bit more inner processing. Background service tasks = more intermittent "stuff".

The 5 video page takes me 4 seconds to fully load, so slightly longer than a single video or single picture but the video player does appear to be downloaded only once (the single video took 1 second longer than the single photo, but multiple videos don't take a second longer for each additional video!).

Hmmm....

Oh and the people who have to d/l the WHOLE video automatically, there's something messed up with a setting somewhere because that should NOT be happening (animated gifs WILL fully download, but videos on Youtube, Vimeo, Etc. will NOT until you hit "play")

At the risk of offending people.... if the "video" is fully downloading before you can scroll past it, are you sure it's a video? If it's an animated gif that SHOULD happen, but it shouldn't for videos.

Here's a thread with an animated gif, which takes me 3 seconds to fully load.
http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/sandbox/293618-test-animated-gif.html#post6002258

You can't offend me Mike, and I appreciate the help because youtube videos have always presented a problem here with my computer.

I don't get a thumbnail imagine or a link to click, I get the whole youtube video, full size, on my screen when it's in a thread. I can't navigate off the page until it's fully loaded and ready to play and it takes awhile.

What browser are you using?

OK, a little looking around and it seems that Internet Explorer has "Autostart" set to "false" as default. Chrome, Firefox, etc. (I believe ALL other browsers) the default is "true" which explains why youtube videos are autostarting/playing. Depending upon which browser you're using there are ways to disable "autostart" which should fix the issue!

Pic of video - 3 sec
1 video - 5 sec
5 video - 15 sec
gif - 7 sec

Now my computer is a bit old, and running XP. I am sure there are ways I could disable vids, or even pics. But I am not one of those complaining. I remember (1995) waiting minutes for a single nude image. And if I wanted a video, I might as well start it the day before, and hope nothing crashed.

Maybe an option in preferences to disable .gifs and vids, for those that choose.

I do agree with a post several pages back. Someone said something about pages refreshing each time you hit "Back". Changing that alone could eliminate 5-10% of page refreshes.

Here's what I take from your times:
1 picture takes you 3 sec.
1 video thumbnail takes 2.5 sec. + 2.5 sec. to load the player
5 Video thumbnails takes 2.5 sec each (2.5x5=12.5) + 2.5 sec. to load the player (and duplicates)
1 gif loads like a photo of equal size, not surprisingly. The gif is 798KB while the thumbnail capture is only 29KB (27.5 times smaller!), so the bulk of the time is spent connecting with photobucket (where I hosted BOTH images).

So basically (for me and Dude at least) a video is no different than a photo or animated gif, it all depends upon the file size of item and since we're only loading thumbnails of videos (and NOT autostarting them) they behave similar.

And when someone goes to a page which has 8 videos (& yes, such pages are not all that infrequent around here), resources are being consumed with 8 rounds of going to YouTube to fetch the preview stills. And previews are not tiny thumbnails. There is a reason for my using the two separate terms, thumbnail and preview. And if the sw refreshes when a user presses the back button, those previews are getting fetched again.

(Nothing against videos, just trying to provide information; both embedded videos using preview frames and larger threads consume resources, per the people who write and maintain the software. I'm a techie, I provide the citations, can't help that that is how stuff works.)

Also, different people may well have different results through no fault of their own. YouTube is not this single big server in the sky.
