Nice to meet you Lauren. Yes, I do vape at work, but not openly. I'm in NYC as well, so it is banned. However, before the ban, my company did not have a vaping policy. I was told by the VP, and I quote, "There isn't a policy but I imagine there will soon be one if a client sees you, so just keep it low" He was a former smoker himself, and understood where I was coming from. We also have a client here that vapes, and sometimes I'll go into his office to vape together. We rent office space, and we have several locations through out the city. There are various empty offices in my facility that I also use to sometimes vape, along with the bathroom stalls. There is no lingering cloud or smell, so no one is the wiser save for my fellow vaping client. I do enjoy going outside to vape as well, with my former smoking buddies. I've gotten quite a few interested in vaping that way.

Hi Tinkiegrrl,
Can you email me at lauren.weber@wsj.com? Even if I quote you anonymously, I still have to know who I'm talking to, get other relevant details. Thanks,
Lauren

Hi Eddard, would you mind talking over the phone? I can't use any stories/information until I talk directly with people, hear more about their background. Even if the quotes/material is anonymous in the story, I still have to know who I'm talking to. Feel free to email me at lauren.weber@wsj.com. Thanks.

Can you answer the floating brain's question (a very astute one-post #18), then I will give you mine.

Fair enough?

For now, until told otherwise by our Adminstrator, there are 4 of us who vape in our work building. 2 of us share an office in this building and so the other 2 join us on occasion. Some supervisors come into our office and make negative comments but until we here something from the Admin, we plan to keep on vaping in our office.
Although, I suppose, if other employees really made a FUSS, we would change our ways out of being courteous. The negative comments I can handle considering they walk in, make a comment, handle their business and then walk out.

State law prohibits smoking but leaves the regulation of e cigs to local government. There is no regulation against it in our locality.

Technically it's not a job because I'm not being paid or compensated. I'm helping out a family friend who is trying to get a small business going and doesn't have the profits yet to hire staff.

Yes, I can and do vape there. I have the owners permission. I rarely vape when a customer is in the shop. It's only when I know they are a smoker and I have confirmed with them they don't mind if I vape. I will answer questions about it if asked, and refer the curious to a couple of the local B&M's.

When at the office I work in a cube farm so there nope. Have to wander outside like the analog days. When I work at home or on the road, you better believe it. If I'm with customers on the road I play it by ear. If they smoke then I feel cool about vaping, if not I'll wait. My wife is supportive of my vaping to get off the analogs so she is cool about me vaping in the house. I did not smoke in the house because of the smell and second hand smoke for my family.

welcome to ECF Lauren ... if you spend just a small amount of time reading the forum ... you will quickly find the truth about eCigarettes and vaping.

The most obvious and common story you will discover ... there are many long term smokers who have quit smoking cigarettes with vaping ... people often post about how surprised they are with the ease they were able to quit smoking.

This place is full of success stories with many more showing up daily ... I myself, am just one of those success stories (30+ years of smoking ... gone overnight).

We really need people like yourself to become interested in what is transpiring here on ECF ... we only request that you report the truth.

Wishing all the best to you Lauren in 2014 :)

It seems so needlessly antagonistic to me to vape at your workplace when smoking isn't allowed. If you some how managed to survive without smoking there, you should be able to do the same with vaping.

Interesting, so you think me vaping in my private office with the owner's permission is "needlessly antagonistic"?

Please explain.

I should of been more clear, as long as you have gotten expressed permission to vape first of course that is ok. I was more talking about people who just take out a e-cig and start vaping and expect people to be ok with it and understand what it is.

I work two jobs : the first one I work is in a small office and it has yet to be brought up about my vaping. They were all just thrilled I wasn't smoking anymore. I do it at my desk and no-one says anything....

My second job however, hates anything that is smoking or related to smoking and has extended that to vaping. It definitely would not fly for me to vape at my desk.

Glad the second one is part time...lol. However, when I did vape at the second job one of the anti-smoking guys actually made a comment that it was far better than smoking so, who knows. "They don't favor either" was how it was put to me.

I accept your clarification. I believe there are settings where it can be done without permission and the vaper can still be non-antagonistic, however. I vape in many cases where I don't have "permission" but there is little/no need for it. I have introduced quite a few vapers to our hobby this way. While boorish behavior certainly can hurt our cause, I see every opportunity to vape as a chance to help it by introducing some new person to the experience. So I rarely pass up such an opportunity. It takes a bit of judgement and a good read on the situation.

When I am not fairly sure, I do ask. When I am asked to stop by ownership/management, I always do politely and promptly.

I do, but only in my private office. I work in a hospital setting, so you can imagine the reaction I'd get if I were wandering down the halls with a little choo-choo trail behind me. ;)
I have had some of my docs in my office during a meeting and I've asked them if they mind if I puff if it's been a longish meeting. 99% of them are supportive, and happy that I've moved off the tobacco. I only had one person ask about anti-freeze...

Except when they ban it in all indoor spaces.... Like NYC. Then again, I don't think this ban is enforceable at all.
Meh. My state banned smoking in indoor workplaces back in 2008. I ignored the ban. I already had 600 CFM of exhaust fans next to my desk, which kept the non-smokers from fussing much. I still use those the exhaust system when vaping, but it doesn't run 24x7 anymore. :D

You obviously don't live in NYC Rossum. They seem to have become experts at telling business owners and home owners what they can and cant do in their private properties.
Correct, I do not, nor would I ever live there. I prefer to have a bit more space than that.
