So, I went ahead and bought one of these Griffin (DUD) things and spent a good 4 hours trying to get the silly thing to work... Then another 4 or so hours reading through various methods.
Now, before I tell you how I got it to work (and why I'm not using it right this moment), I'm going to give a short background.
My main PV is a Kicked Silver Bullet. I've tried a few VV devices, just to compare it with the VW tech that I carry around with me, and I don't think that I can really compare them. My first rebuildable was a GG Penelope. Pretty little tank with a fairly straight forward build concept. I spent some time learning the ropes to make it work properly, and now I can rebuild it in about 5-10 minutes (depending on if she's getting a bath or not). I happen to have hundreds of feet of wire in my little rebuild box, including some NR wire.
So, I popped open my Griffin and started to examine it, trying to figure out what went where and how it worked...before I read anything. In the process of doing so, I attempted to take the tank portion apart while the pre-made wick was inside. SS mesh got all twisted and the wire was wrecked...no big deal, pulled it out and reset the whole thing, same mesh. It worked...sort of...if I dripped on it...and didn't take too long of a drag. I was getting the dreaded top-end hot-spots.
Tried a few more times, probably went through a foot of wire before I started searching for more methods to wrap the coil...which lead me here.
I was about to start trying to get silica to work, when I read about the cotton batting method. Brilliant. I borrowed that, and then stole a page out of the GG playbook, and wrapped up a gorgeous new coil, with NR wire on the top...only needed a few mms of it though, so it felt like a waste...but it works!
Only problem is that my coil is 0.7ohms, and none of my batteries will fire it safely. I did run it on one of my egos for a dozen or so pulses like I was going to take a drag. The wick was keeping up, and the cotton stayed wet...my battery was feeling a bit cranky about it though, so I put it aside.
Anyhow... I'm not going to risk my main PV for a cheapy rebuildable, when I could just whip up another wire later on.
Cheers!
