I have a Cobra (3/32 wick hole).

Is there any place left to buy 3/32 ceramic wicks? Or am I stuck having to buy a 1/8 and sanding it down/buying Top Fin stuff?

You might be out of luck on the 3/32" now, Tank had some but I fear they may be gone. You could check. Is there any room in he Cobra to make the hole larger? Also, DV has 7/64" I believe which will get you a little closer . . .

I ordered the 7/64 to try in my 3/32 hole. I still don't know if I will make the hole bigger or make the wick smaller. What to do???

dsmooch, so out of all the set-up you have done with the 1/8 wicks, what wire and resistance is your fav so far? i have just done a 3 wrap of 30g @ 1-Ω, kind of liking it. also, it seems like the newer fc wicks done hot wrap as good as the older ones.

I thought you settled on the 28g 3/4 ?!
I have 3 types of setup running, all at around .8 .9ohm on mechanical.
The first is the classic 3/4 28g. This one is pretty much home for me.
The second is the ribbon .8mm. I had 3 setups with it. I'm down to one on my ZAU with a Honeyflew. It's great for a morning vape with your first coffee. It produces a great amount of vapor, great flavor but almost no hit. You kind of feel the hit on the exhale if you see what I mean. This is not a setup I would vape all day but I'm glad I have it.
The last setup I have running is a 25g (the same one that I uploaded as the "and the winner is" pic). This one is a seriously hot coil and it hits strong. more flavor would be too much flavor. This vape is pretty intense, not a setup I could vape all day as well but I love this one too.
I like the three-dimensional vape, but if I had to choose one that would be the 3/4 28g...

i have been back and forth with many set-ups for my mechanical mods. i have done all of what you have set-up except for the 25g. it seems like i am happy with a set-up initially but then i want something more. i just havent found a better all around vape that my 3/32 wick with the 30g. at the moment i am vaping a 3 wrap of 30g on a 1/8 wick, although it responds a little faster it doesnt have the flavor of the 28g. i think i will try the .5 ribbon, have you done this on a 1/8 wick?

Just got my RSST, I didnt take out the bushing yet, but I noticed the same thing with the inside edge of top cap and o-ring. Its way too sharp, so I smooth it/rounded it a bit with sandpaper. Much better fit now. I have it set up with a pdib twisted SS and its working real well with the stock wick hole, no gurgling yet.

Funny, the first thing I did was compare it to the original AGA-T. I would rank the AGA-T slightly higher than the RSST and both way higher than the AGA-T2. Given the current price differential, the AGA-T (if you can still get one) is a much better value for a chinese atty. Almost every chinese atty I have needed some additional tweaking to bring it up to par. Ya get what you pay for.... :)

BTW, any thoughts on the .8mm kanthal..definitely needs a mechanical to drive it.

gdeal, how are you liking this twisted ss? is the flavor any different to reg rolled mesh. being that you vape ceramic along with ss, when you do vape ss can you taste a bit of metalic taste compared to ceramic? i know that when i tried a ss wick after vaping ceramic for a while i could taste a slight metalic taste that i never had before.

They are both working really well. With the same juice, I have the 3/32 ceramic on a Cobra/provari and the SS twist on a RSST/Telescope mechanical, both have .8ohm coils. When I switch from SS to ceramic or ceramic to SS, you can taste the difference. Its very slight. When you go from ceramic to SS, you first notice the metal taste, then it disappears. Same when you go from SS to ceramic, I notice the ceramic taste, but it also disappears. Its really only on the first vape, then gone.

The other thing I noticed is that I vape differently on ceramic than SS. Ceramic, I know that there can be a faster drop off with juice, so I naturally bring it to more of a horizontal position. With the SS, I stay at 45 degrees. This may be more due to having a larger wick hole gap (and/or slightly thicker SS mesh wick) in the RSST.

The one thing that is very noticeable is how the two different wick materials vape. The ceramic is a bit smoother, sweeter and wetter, but has less TH. The SS is flavorful and satisfying but you can notice the increase in TH kick from the nic. I want to say the SS has a grittier vape, but that may not be the best description, maybe better to say it has a sharper edge to the vape?

The twisted mesh has no different flavor than a plain rolled mesh. What was cool about the SS twist was that I had a bunch of smaller #400 pieces laying around, so I just rolled them up really quickly and then twisted them tight. Then I adjusted the number of mini wicks to the coil size, retwisted and pulse oxidized in place. I was in a rush to get that RSST running for the first time, so there really wasnt a lot finesse going into the build. It does wick as good as or better than any "solid" rolled mesh I have had. I was a bit surprised.

DSmooch mentioned that he prefers 28g round wire over ribbon on the ceramic. (you mention this too?) I think that there is some logic there. For me, ribbon provides a smoother vape, so maybe to get back some of that TH edge on ceramic I will need to setup a 28g round on ceramic and do a side by side comparison to the ribbon on SS mesh. Makes more sense than increasing nic levels.

Argh..just realized I typed way too much.

it is truely amazing just how many set-up's are obtainable with these attys and thanks to people like you who are willing to expierment and share the comparisons is appreciated. i do feel like there is some corrolation between a thicker wire being more cooler, thus less TH, maybe its not actually the fact that a thicker wire is cooler, just that maybe the heat is spread out more along the wick. have you done a .5 mm ribbon on a 1/8 wick? i am currently vaping a 30g@ 1-Ω on a 1/8 wick and it is performing very well, even with a mechanical it is blowing out some clouds, it just doesnt have the flavor of the 28g, but it does have more TH, so maybe the comparable ribbon would give it the flavor of the 28g, but the response of the 30g round.

depending on your atomizer,it would be alot easier to just bore out the wick hole. i think trying to reduce the wick to such a small diameter could be potentially risky. plus once and if you are able to reduce the size you still have to succesfully wrap it, and to wrap a 3/32 wick is a little more risky then a 7/64 . so all in all i would enlarge the hole.

Yea, I think you're right. Its only a tiny bit to bore out. How much larger should I make the hole?

So I just re-checked my set-ups, I also have a 30g round wire on a 1/8 wick, in an AGAT2 and a .5mm ribbon (30g equivalent) on a 1/8 in an original AGA both with the same juice one at 1.5ohm, the other at 1.6ohm. At the same power level, the round wire has more TH (and I can tell it running hotter from the taste.) The .5mm ribbon does gives more TH than the .8mm ribbon.

I think what happens with the comparable wires (30g round and .5mm Ribbon) is that the same amp levels will run the wire at the same temp, but as you said the ribbon "runs" cooler because of greater surface area directly on the wick and exposed to airflow. Same thing with 28g and .8mm ribbon, you more surface area for vaporization (bigger clouds), but ya gotta have at least 3+ amps running through it to avoid any vape lag.

Whoa, this is getting a bit complex and we are probably just talking about subtleties because it also depends upon the juice you use too. I find that I run tobacco flavors much hotter than say a peppermint/menthol like flavor. And then, we have different genny devices as well which provide the airflow dynamics....it like a big jigsaw puzzle.

Looking at the discussion, it looks like the "does it work" question is way past us. we talking nuances and optimization; skeptics may talk about the hype, as far as we're concerned it's just a new vape experience (not so new now!).
what bugs me a bit at this stage is that unknown element about the composition of the FC. I think it would be in the best interest of everyone to make that one a known variable and put it behind us. Vap, do you think this is a piece of info that is obtainable?

about your question, no dear, I don't have any .5mm, I went directly to the .8mm, the 28g equivalent...
also, I thought the thicker the wire, the hotter it is.... did I miss it?

Absolutely agree with this. I have complete piece of mind about using these as my own little experiments show that these wicks are not decomposing and do not change at all under extreme temps. However, it is in everybody's interest that full disclosure on materials is forthcoming. In that way, people can make an informed choice about whether they want to try them out or not. What is a good strategy to pursue do you think? Should we put some pressure on suppliers to find out from the makers? I wonder if Scuba Dan has gone down that road already? Anyone have a friend in China that could make some inquiries (I think that is where most of these materials are being made)? One possible snag however, verbal descriptions and assurances are merely anecdotal and if there is no current requirement to do so, is any company going to put on paper detailed information on materials if there is no legal or monetary reason for it?

Just on a side note, I was looking at images of porous corals today. Some of these have very fine porous structures. How would this be for some experiments? Talk about a no mystery material, it is basically pure calcium carbonate. Should keep all the chemo-phobics happy. Great for healthy teeth and bones :)

Here is a core sample:

coral.jpg

This one is a little too porous but other varieties have much finer structures. Maybe some potential here.

The mermaid of the sea, what is next? Is coral on the protected list? How is it obtained?

Apparently the sea will rise due to the global warming and therefore the corals will all die and we will have a huge supply of the coast of Australia.... I'll ship you some at that stage.

On a serious note there is a huge supply of coral stone available, heck there are mountains of it, I wonder if sandstone would be suitable? there are various degrees of porousness with those, were is our forums stone mason to tell us more about these things.
