Just another vote for the 1/8 inch wicks here. After making a couple of mega-wicks of various configurations with my RSST (5mm+ wick hole), I've put the bushing back in & I'm now running a 1/8 inch ceramic again. Even with the bushing back in - the wick hole is still around 3.5 mm, so a 1/8 inch wick is nice and loose,. It wicks very well, even without a grooved ceramic.
I took a well-used 1/8 fishstick out of my drilled-out AGA-T2 , torched it clean, used the cheesecloth thread method (no hot-wrap) set it up with .5X.1 Ribbon Kanthal.....wrapped it nice and tight right on the atty.
No break-in at all - great flavor right away, and very fast heat-up. I think this might be my preferred method to set these up now, much easier than the Hot-wrap (not more burnt fingers!!), and NO break-in time! I plan on making a new slotted wick for the AGA soon and give that a try with the cheesecloth wrap method also just to see how it will work.
I liked the larger wicks for many reasons. They are very robust, and great flavors, but they take a long time to heat up. Once they come up to temp, they work well, but unless you can keep the wick hot (chain-vaping), or don't mind hitting the go-switch and waiting for about two-three seconds to take a toot, they are a bit frustrating. The RSST with the loose-fitting 1/8 ceramic & cotton-wrapped Ribbon coil is just outstanding - the best its ever been.
I tried the 3/32 wicks a couple of times, but I was never successful in getting one to the point of being able to actually try one. Out of at least half-a dozen I tried making or wrapping - I broke every single one before I could ever give them a decent try. Just too fragile for me....
When the RSSTs become available again, I plan on picking up at least one more to try experimenting with a slotted mega-wick - that might be the answer to the vape-lag problem - eliminating some of the mass of the wick by cutting slots in it might be the solution. Right now though, I just want to enjoy it as-is.
Biggest thing I've taken away though is how well the thread of cotton under the coil works. Thanks for the guys who recommended it....I'm impressed.
