Whistling past the graveyard...

Statement from FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., on new steps to address epidemic of youth e-cigarette use
But we must do more to stem what I see as an epidemic of use of e-cigs among teens, and deeply disturbing trends that show no sign of abating. So, we’re also going to re-visit the compliance policy that we announced last summer to extend the application compliance periods for certain deemed products, including and especially the e-cigarettes that were on the market as of Aug. 8, 2016. Under the current policy, the compliance date for filing applications for such products was extended to Aug. 8, 2022.

Yeah I started stockpiling nic once I happened across the deeming thread.

Also, not going to get political but if we are talking music metaphors I might offer up the band on the titanic as a more apt metaphor. Well not more apt, equally apt.

There's nothing worse than being talked all nice to then roofied.Even/especially when you saw it coming the whole time. Which is why there is plenty of Plan b in my freezer.

I watched PBS Newshour and Gottlieb was on it today. He made it pretty clear that he is talking about 4 closed pod systems and not flavored juice in general. He repeated several times that he doesn't want to take devices off the market for Adults.

He was talking Blu, juul, VUSE, etc

I believe when Mr. Gottlieb referred to Flavored e-Liquids, he was referring to All Flavored e-Liquids. Be it in a Bottle or in a Pod.

FDA wants e-cigarette makers to extinguish use by kids

Not what he went into. He said he was talking about 4 manufactures of Devices. All were pods. You can probably find the PBS interview on the web
Perhaps a sacrificial lamb upon the altar to appease the do goodie good do gooder letter alphabet groups...

Here’s what’s weird though: blu and vuse are both tobacco company products, yet the potential of their banning RAISES the stock price of the company.

They have a choice.

Kids are going to continue to do one, or the other, or both.

Not all kids, maybe not even a majority (heh he said majority), but they are going to do it.

No amount of legislation will change that.

So the numbskulls in charge can watch smoking rates go up.

Bully for them.

Like Doing DIY?

And then Selling it to their Friends?
Yup. That. Let's not forget how creative kids are as we age.

What saddens me the most is these people know exactly how creative kids are and they are still going to waste resources on a futile plan.
It's not futile to them. They know exactly what they're doing. For one, it will put money into the "justice system" (/private correctional facilities). They'll have created a whole new sub-culture of underground illegal mixers and sellers of e liquid.

It would not solve the problem at all. Teens are hardwired to experiment period.
Right? Like they care about the flavor of a Tide Pod, LOL

Yup. Why not? Kids are have their own economy. It seriously starts in grade school. They will seriously do whatever.

It's not futile to them. I think they know exactly what they're doing. New laws create new criminals...

...
One of my friends shared this on FB (and all of her friends were like "YAY - It's about time!!" and "I hope they pull it off the market" *sigh* ...I left a link to the 'The Truth About Vaping' YT channel, politely urging them to watch it. And then ran. They won't watch it and they'll totally start a huge attack against me. Whatever.

I have thought about DIY, but haven't done it. Been vaping for about 3.5 yrs. It's really the next thing for me, I guess. I've "evolved" to my small collection of devices and chosen liquid that I love and don't really feel the urge to shop for anymore stuff. But, I'm also already kind of bogged down with vaping in general - constantly filling up and charging batteries, and feeling annoyed when I have to buy more liquid (going to have to get about 4 new batteries, too, soon). Like deep inside I know it's a dumb thing I do that eliminated it, it would simplify my life just a little bit more. I'm just waiting for the day I get bored with it and quit... But I really like vaping! (the struggle is real) This news may push me over to the DIY edge again. Aaarg - this stuff and the way people are believing all the propaganda is really infuriating. :/

I'd encourage you to try to DIY. I've been doing it pretty much since I started vaping (because I'm cheap like that) and as others have noted, its really gotten easier and with more variety as the years have gone on. If you can make a mixed drink, you can do DIY. Warning though, it can be almost as bad as the "shiny" effect with new e-cig equipment.

I don't care if Gottleib said closed systems or not. I DO NOT BELIEVE his words based on what he said in the past. It may be closed systems NOW, but later it's going to be ALL of them.

Don't drink the roofied drink he is proffering and don't be an apologist for his behavior.

The thing that annoys me is not so much that kids are resourceful, they ARE, but not all of them will be. Remembering my own switch to vaping and how Not Fun it was, well, I don't much care for ANY kid to start smoking even if they ALL freaking vaped which they won't all do. THEY WANT new smokers and that is ALL there is too it Gottleib is not dumb he KNOWS vaping is safer.

This is all about smoking.

Get some nice flavors and some nicotine in your freezer. Do it now. I have watched what was said, and seen what has happened. I trust no one well the number is shrinking every day on both sides of the aisle and agencies.

FDA today issued letters to the manufacturers of the five top-selling national brands. All of these brands – JUUL, Vuse, MarkTen XL, blu e-cigs, and Logic – made up a vast majority of the products illegally sold to minors as part of the blitz this summer. The agency is asking each company to submit to FDA within 60 days plans describing how they will address the widespread youth access and use of their products.

FDA takes new steps to address epidemic of youth e-cigarette use, including a historic action against more than 1,300 retailers and 5 major manufacturers for their roles perpetuating youth access

They are not talking about bottled ejuice just pod systems at this point. That could change later but not currently after bottled liquids

Honestly what can the company's effectively do? Other than refuse to sell outside of their own online site I'm not seeing much they can do. I worked in convenient stores for years and the owners and management seldom care who you sell to, only how much you sell.
