My company health insurance used to ask each year if you were a nicotine user. If you were, you paid an annual $200 increase in your yearly premium (not monthly). For the past two years they haven't asked that question, but they still list me as a nicotine user.

In the ACA market the premium goes up considerably.

As I remember, the threads that discussed the cotinine question gave the advice to abstain from nic for up to two weeks before a test, although 4 to 5 days without nic should pass. The tests can also detect a low range that they refer to as exposure to side stream smoke. So, if you routinely stand with your smoking buddies in the smoking area at break and don't use nicotine, you will test positive for nicotine, although you will probably fall into the bystander second hand smoke category.

People have failed the test by vaping 5mg nicotine juices. It's best to abstain for a week or more before being tested. Still, as some have said, insurance companies have reportedly refused to pay when people were listed as non nic users, but tested positive in the hospital. You also want to tell your primary care provider that you are now a non-smoker so that you can be listed as such. Carriers will pick up information from records that were never changed.

When my wife and I was getting supplemental life insurance, the agent asked if we smoked. My wife said no, I said yes (I was a smoker at the time). The price difference was 100 bucks a month !! He asked if I could quit for a week, NO cheating. I said for 100 bucks a month I could !! (and my wife STRONGLY concurred) He swabbed my wife's mouth, put "spouse not home" for me. I asked, if I pass, but "start smoking", will any claim be denied. He said nope, it was a one time test.

A week later, he swabbed my mouth, I passed !!

First thing I did was go buy a pack of smokes....go figure.

I vape 6mg juice, probably 4-6 ml per day. With this test coming up, I stopped vaping on a Friday for a Monday test. I drank a lot of liquids over that weekend, enough to where the "bleed and feed" was alive and well (LOL). On that Monday, they asked if I smoked . . . "no" . . . if i ever had . . . "yes" . . . when did you quit . . . "18 months ago" . . . all being the truth. I took a urine and blood test and passed with flying colors.

At 18mg, but only 1 ml, I'd think you'd be fine with a 3-4 day vacation, but while eating well and staying almost overly hydrated.

I feel it is unfair for vapers to be considered in the same risk scale as smokers.... That is why i am doing this, i really feel it is not cheating.

thanks in advance :2cool:

We have no idea of the long term affects of vaping so its hard to consider it unfair. If the consider it safe in 20yrs then yes, until then Id say its fair.

They have no idea about the long term effects of many prescription drugs but you aren't in the same risk scale as smokers for using that. Yet I still frequently see those lawyer commercials on TV about some of them causing death and permanent disability. What about nicotine patches or other nic delivery systems?

I disagree 100%. Based on this logic, one would also support banning vaping in public places, high sin taxes and other strong regulations until the industry can prove that vaping is safe with 20 years of data. WRONG! It is the responsibility of the insurance company in this case to prove that vaping leads to an earlier death. Obviously, they can do whatever they like as it is their business and their money. However, logically it is up to the other party to prove harm, not for the vaping industry to prove that is safe with 20 years of data.

The tests don't differentiate between nicotine in one's system delivered through smoking, chewing tobacco or vaping, so it's all moot. If they have a no nicotine policy, or added cost for testing positive for nicotine, it doesn't matter if one is only vaping. Smokers would then say they do not smoke, but use electronic cigarettes in order to get the lower rates...

We don't know the long term effect of a lot of things. Yet none of them are being compared to burning tobacco.

If I'm forced to carry insurance by law, that really shouldn't be my problem.

Hi

First time here, I have been vaping for 8 months only at nights around 1ml of 18mg eliquid for about 4 hours. I use a 2 ohm clearomizer and use 3,7 voltage

I stopped for 11 days cold turkey , no vaping at all for 11 days because i was getting tested for a life insurance. On day 11 my sample was given, it was a urine sample. Would like to know what are the chances for passing the test or not.

I feel it is unfair for vapers to be considered in the same risk scale as smokers.... That is why i am doing this, i really feel it is not cheating.

thanks in advance :2cool:

I know 5 days for .......

and 30 days for .........

I know if it were me I would give it 2 weeks for safety. I have no health insurance like that. If i were you i would take it serious. Maybe its good if they know you use nicotine, You never know, maybe one day they will need to know what your taking to help you in a life or death situation. Hmmm

If you end up popping positive on the test, just give them this report from the New England Journal of Medicine:

MMS: Error

O, stop it!
Presence of nicotine in vegetables is a secret of Polichinelle. It has been known for many years (100?).
Current cotinine tests have thresholds for “background” nicotine, like in vegetables or second-hand smoking.
