I have heard, about a zillion times, the phrase, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." I have decided that if the government ever totally outlaws guns (and they already will not let me carry a sword), at that point, I will then become an outlaw. Of course, the current administration already considers me to be a terrorist because 1) I am a legal gun owner, 2) I have been a member of the United States armed forces, and 3) I have been a police officer. Note that in #2 and #3, I took an oath to "uphold the constitution of the United States of America" (and for #3 "and the State of Oregon."). I do not consider those oaths to have been discarded at the time I left the USAF or the police force; to me, they are binding forever. I will protect and defend, regardless of the illegal actions of government.

You all know what/where this is...

Hell ya!! and I will speak soon on jury nullification. God save those who served for our country, and the people who are in control!! And have tried to tell many they are taking away weapons from the Vets. Why? they are shown how to use them to save this country.

Not true, the media is lying to you. The numbers were bad a few years ago, but the number of those in support are about 60% Stay strong.

It's a mass effect as well as media circus.

Mass effect: when I was born, the population of this planet was 3.47 billion. Today, it's more than 7.3 billion. More than double in the past 50 years. Even the wide open spaces are crowded...

Media: It's not that these things did not happen before, but media's reach was limited so we didn't hear about it instantaneously.

with so many more people in this ever connected society maybe its not that the smart ones are dwindling, its that the bad one are getting so much attention?

We are being pushed fear by the media.

Fear sells. Good deed do not. Seriously, would anyone want to watch the news if it was all like my line above? Two dear sweet little old ladies helped a disabled vet across the street today, three children helped a fireman fold up his hose after a practice training session - there haven't been any fires in weeks, and nothing bad happened and all is right with the world, as always... What sells? Rape, murder, wars, terrorism, political protests against... what?... the America most of us love.

..and now...someone tries to ruin it for all of us by committing another senseless act.
My deep condolences and prayers go out to those with family/friends involved in the shootings in Oregon
I too do not wish to enter the fray of the guns/no guns issue here on this thread.
But I have always believed that if a person acts like a rabid dog, with the means to endanger the lives of those near them, then they should be treated like the rabid dog they are. This may sound harsh...but those of you, who know something about my history understand where I am coming from. This was a senseless act.

It's a state of mind. When you were six years old, do you remember how it seemed to take FOREVER for Christmas to get here? That's because one year was 1/6th of your life. Now, at 66 (me, not you), that year is only 1/66th of my life and next Xmas seems to happen very quickly right after the last one. Apply that psychological aspect to your work and leisure life... if work is hard or you don't like what you're doing, 40 hours seems to take 80, and if you're having fun on your days off, they are over only "minutes" after you started.

I have always given that serious thought. You know, I would be glad to give up my guns if Gort and Klatu would come to this planet and guarantee me that NO ONE would have a gun. Of course, at that point, the bad guys will start using knives. OK, let's get rid of those too. Then the bad guys would just start carrying sharpened forks. How far can we take this? The bottom line is that "guns don't kill people; people kill people." So let's move all the pervs to Planet G (starting with the politicians).

@Fuzzy Thunderbear ..I realize I can't leave my head stuck in the sand and expect to keep up with the happenings in the World..but I too dislike the quest by the media to one up each other with the prize being the most gut wrenching story for the highest ratings. I realize I have a choice ..somewhat anyway..in news sources...All of them come from people...people have different perspectives...and biases...Perhaps 2 sources..each radically opposed to the others view..My guess is the "truth" lies somewhere in the middle

I hope tomorrow gives you some much needed rest from the excitement.

Katz, dear one, my comments were not directed at you in particular. You just gave me the impetus to spout off. And I know your head is not in the sand, but you don't like to get involved in controversial subjects. That's what @tiggerrts and I are here for... we both are quite capable of jumping up on our soapboxes and slamming our fists onto the podium as we lecture the congregation. Those who don't want to hear our rants are welcome to turn away momentarily and we will not hold that against them. But, occasionally, we need to blow off steam. <smooches>

Oh, and you are right...it's just one more day on the farm. If I hated it as much as it sometimes seems, I could just sell all my critters and move to an apartment in the city where someone else has to take care of all the problems. No, I'd have to shoot myself then (uh, with a slingshot or something rubber ) because these little people here are... a bonne raison de etere. (did I spell that right?)

(Not directed at you, Katz, just feeding off of other posts--and your post made a good launch pad.)

Sometimes. Having been "near the source" for some local media stories and very "well-informed" for several national stories, I know all too well how facts becomes distorted in the coverage of even straight-forward events. Exponentialize that in the echo chamber of today's internet world in which bloggers and reporters build on each other's stories without ever going to the source and you have a recipe for disaster. Further, as much as we may wish it to be, the truth is also often much more complex than the binary model of which we are often so fond--things are not black and white, liberal or conservative, left or right, or right or wrong. They are most often several shades of gray along multiple spectra. So, while one would hope that the truth lies in the middle or is easily understood, it sometimes--sadly--lies in another dimension altogether.

With that cheerful thought, I'll bid the Treefam a good night.

@bellastarr ...I'm glad you are getting some much needed healthy rest ... I think there's been some studies done...that computer use before bed can disrupt your sleep patterns...hmmm...I know a friend haz a cell phone program that dims the light intensity of their screen as the day goes on...based on the same principle. Whatever the reason...
