10/1 #4
I have heard, about a zillion times, the phrase, "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns." I have decided that if the government ever totally outlaws guns (and they already will not let me carry a sword), at that point, I will then become an outlaw. Of course, the current administration already considers me to be a terrorist because 1) I am a legal gun owner, 2) I have been a member of the United States armed forces, and 3) I have been a police officer. Note that in #2 and #3, I took an oath to "uphold the constitution of the United States of America" (and for #3 "and the State of Oregon."). I do not consider those oaths to have been discarded at the time I left the USAF or the police force; to me, they are binding forever. I will protect and defend, regardless of the illegal actions of government.

You all know what/where this is...
I was making that shape out of my mashed potatoes at dinner for some reason
I have always given that serious thought. You know, I would be glad to give up my guns if Gort and Klatu would come to this planet and guarantee me that NO ONE would have a gun. Of course, at that point, the bad guys will start using knives. OK, let's get rid of those too. Then the bad guys would just start carrying sharpened forks. How far can we take this? The bottom line is that "guns don't kill people; people kill people." So let's move all the pervs to Planet G (starting with the politicians).

Guns guns guns! Saints preserve us...
I had this argument with my father at least once in every phone call while he was alive. Every time there is a shooting, or I hear gunfire, or I think of my father - which is daily - I have the conversation in my head all over again.
1) If gun rights is the first thing you think of when an incident like this happens, go see a mental health care specialist ASAP. Your priorities are seriously screwed up!
I feel terrible for the families and friends and the injured. This will be a trying time for Oregon and the nation.
2) The constitution guarantees us the right to bear arms, true. However, the founding fathers had no idea what doors they were opening and how technology would advance. At that time, a muzzle-loading musket was an armament. Perhaps a cannon, but still a single shot, highly inaccurate, slow to use, heavy to carry device. Today, a .50 caliber machine gun. An AR-15. A 9 mm beretta. A 30 kiloton tactical nuke. They are all armaments... so is a hammer, if used incorrectly. You want to know what a weapon of mass destruction really looks like? Arm every Chinese citizen with a sharpened chopstick... we would not have enough bullets to stop them all before the damage was done. Heck, we're vapers... short 18650
batteries in un-vented mods and lob 'em at the opposition. Better yet, short 26650
batteries... Point is, I think gun ownership is fine. But, I also think licensing needs to happen... I find it absurd that you have to take a class, pass a test, and pay
insurance to purchase and operate a car, but any schmuck with a couple hundred dollars and a 50 IQ can walk in off the street and buy a rifle and ammunition.
Just so you know, I am as offended that people can procreate willy-nilly without education and licensing... some folks just should not breed!
Of course, every time I said that my father would bring up Hitler and how Germany required licensing and used that to take away guns right before WW2.
Hitler was also voted Man of the year in 1938 by Time Magazine...
And if they take away guns? Well, I got plans for a trebuchet here somewhere...
Go figure...
Again, my heart goes out to those suffering...
