After my comments a day or two ago about my pleasing Spheroid experience, and less pleasing Heron experiences, I decided to rebuild the Heron. I used the same exact build (silica, 4 wraps of 30g Kanthal.) And, different juices, but both at 6mg. Of course, it's hard to be exactly the same, given height from the deck and spaces between the wraps etc. etc. Elements which are very difficult to be precise about.
But, that said, the Heron is really hard on my lungs. In contrast, the Spheroid is smooth, cooler and really delightful.
Any thoughts, my friends?

I've had exactly the same experience as you've described. Great results with the Spheroid, but disappointing with the Heron. Tried with the topper and without. Different coil wraps, different lasso configurations/lengths. Finally I gave up trying and ended up with exactly the same wick/coil combination I used in the Spheroid and thought that'll be the best I an going to get... It was pretty good in the Heron - but not great.
Then a couple of days ago, (as a "one more try") I put on a micro coil with KJD wick and BINGO!
It's puffing like a steam train, loads and loads of flavour - brilliant...
I know it is very frustrating trying this and that - and making no progress. I'd basically given up on it and settled for something that although it was OK, it wasn't great.
It's taken me very long to get a build that I really like - a lot.
Have you tried a micro coil? It's worth a go...

That's part of the funny thing of it. My first few builds were poor because of fluff issues [either too much, too little, or not uniformly fitted into the chamber.] But, I've resolved these. These first builds were with silica loops. When I got the fluff going well, I switched to KGD/microcoils. The problem I had with these were that the wick would not maintain its erection [LOL] and flop down, so not feed the liquid to the coil well. So, I switched back to silica loops. I actually love the flavor I'm getting, and it's wicking well, at last. It's just that the vapor is hot and heavy, and I'm coughing like mad, though enjoying the flavor as I do it.:p

Many times with silica builds, it is easy to have a burnt taste or a hard sense in lungs and not be able to find what is going on due to a combination of different parameters. A struggled wick, hot wire (the coil seems to light up starting at the outer loops and then goes to the inner loops), taste from the wick or the wire (torch the wick and pass the wire over a flame), too tight fluff, etc.

If you try a cotton build with micro coil, you may enjoy your Heron much better in my opinion.

Cucco had a blast. Did not eat fair food though. Saw a few vapers in the wild. Asked about a good vapor shop.... Nothing...:(
oh well. My paps was happily ticked in his new leather pouch.

Happy to hear you had a blast! :) No fair food? But, you are supposed to be bad, and eat fair food! :)

I was the same. It just wasn't up there with my Spheroid at first, until I built a microcoil with rayon. Gorgeous vape now. I haven't put it down in five days!

Why don't you use the little cotton helper thing (I don't know the correct term for it, sorry!) to keep the cotton up. To continue your analogy it's like ...... for your wick ;)

This is the part I'm talking about (the one I've circled).

Thanks for reminding me of my omission. I was using the cotton topper bit and it didn't help me. Must be user error somehow, but not sure what.

My normal routine when I was using them daily was to disassemble and clean each of the PAPS and it's topper about once a week, sooner if it stopped hitting hard. That's when I just rinse the Heron fluff under running water and set it aside to dry (without squeezing the water out as that would probably compress it). Have an inclined rack I put the fluff on so it drains fast on its own. By the time the PAPS/Heron parts all dry on their paper toweling the fluff is dry as well and can be reinstalled.

The whole cleaning thing was quite a process when I was using most of my 10 GP's and their toppers almost daily. Now days I only have 5-7 of them on-line at a time, so on cleaning day I just switch to the back ups that are nice and clean while the others dry, then reassemble them and they become back ups. The routine for my 7 new Reo's is about the same (but easier), and using some of them daily takes alot of pressure off the PAPS gear.

What's all this talk about ...... for a wick? Hmmm!

On another subject, how do you know when it is time to clean the fluff in your Spheroid? I've been running the same juice all along so I haven't pulled the fluff out to clean it. Should I be doing this as a part of the normal routine?

The only time I clean out my fluff is when I change flavors or need to disassemble for the atty for a thorough cleaning.

I've gone as long as several weeks without the need to clean if the atty sees regular useand is still performing well.

Hello my GP Family! :)

I spent some money on me again! Twice, in like a week. Hmm.. Crazy stuff! Maybe, I should go see my shrink? Oh, wait a minute, she was the one who told me to spend some money on myself. Never mind. :)

Somebody was getting rid of this. Never used. So, what the heck, I'll give it a try. I do love tools! :)
