LOL!! Actually, grits is really just like cream of wheat, a bit like oatmeal that tastes like mashed potatoes. It's very bland... so people put things on it to eat it, butter salt and pepper, tobasco, etc. It's one of the 'unique' southern US foods:).

Okra IS slimy... and an acquired taste... some foods have to be eaten often enough to acquire the taste or they are just shockingly nasty. Eggplant, sushi, caviar, raw oysters, steamers, sardines, anchovy, liver, and at a young age, tomatoes... all fit into that category. But once used to them, they are all obsession/craving foods:).

Grits isn't really... if you like mashed potatoes or cream of wheat, or rice, you learn to like grits real quick:).

Green eggs... years ago, I had a few auracana chickens. They are small native south american chickens that lay easter colored eggs, mostly green. I had 5 of em, and each one laid a different color... 2 green, blue, pink with purple spots, pale apricot eggs. They didn't lay every day in the season, but the eggs were stunningly beautiful pastel colors. Then I moved into a subdivision that didn't allow chicken pets :(.
I've tried grits, accidentally, in South Carolina. The waitress told me my side options, three times and I could NOT understand her southern drawl. I got it and felt sick and it was gross. And I hate raw oysters & sardines but love sushi! So I don't hate all weird stuff. LOLOLOLOL I guess I'm too much of a northern girl cuz those grits taste NOTHING like mash potatoes too me!! And okra..eeewwww, yuck.

I think I have the perfect initiation breakfast suggestion. Steamed Okra with a side of grits!! :)

Evil, simply evil. Good thing I'm already in or I may have had second thoughts on my ProVari, or at least letting anyone know I got one.

And Collard greens with pepper vinegar:)!!

Ok, now this is bad too! I know I'd starve in the Deep South for sure. Unless I could have BBQ everyday. {shudder}

Soaking Okra in water for a while will remove most of the sliminess. Just cover it with water and let it sit. After a while the slime floats to the top. Drain, rinse and then cook.

It's still a weird texture and I can see how picky eaters won't go for it.

Done right, it can be amazing, specially when coated in spices and fried!! Mmmmmm..

Ok, thx for the tip but I kinda gagged a little reading this...slime floats to the top..I think I'd try it again, already cooked and fried. If I saw the slime floating, I'm toast

There's a way to make okra taste better & not slimy at all. After you soak it in water with a lid on (so you don't see the slime), throw away the entire bowl & order pizza.

I'll never pass up a good pizza, but where I use okra is in Gumbo. Throw it in after your chicken and sausage and it thickens the chicken broth base, not to mention it doesn't even look like okra once the whole thing is done. I use shrimp along with the chicken and sausage, lots of onion, green pepper, cajun seasoning, and I mix the rice straight in which makes it more of a gumbo/jambalaya hybrid.

Calf fries, fried okra, poke sallet with ham bone, steamed romanesco., peach cobbler.
Boil crawfish, red taters, corn, collard greens, pecan pie.
Fried catfish, fried green tomato's, boiled cabbage, dew berry cobbler.

now this you have to try before you put it down.

Haggis is a savoury pudding containing sheep's pluck (heart, liver and lungs); minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally encased in the animal's stomach and simmered for approximately three hours. Most modern commercial haggis is prepared in a sausage casing rather than an actual stomach.

I stand corrected. I'll have to add 12 more things to my list of why I don't like Texans. :D

At least haggis isn't southern, it's Scottish. As an Irishman, I'm allowed to dislike the Scots without giving a reason. It's our heritage  We drink, hate Scots & blow things up. Not always in that order.

Following my code for trying anything once, I've tried Haggis..followed by half a pint of Guinness! It was really good.. The stout that is (because Guinness is not beer!).

Speaking of Guinness, I make a really good Beef and Guinness stew too!! It's been a while since I've cooked up a pot of that..
