This guide is absolutely fantastic! All the info is much appreciated! Very good added info in the replies as well! Great job, one more reason i love this place more and more!
Yewstinc (lol @ your name!) - I like strong flavor too, but when I use too much flavoring the e-liquid just tastes bad - and most of the time it doesn't even taste anything like the flavor. Most tpa flavorings are good at 5%, but sometimes I need as much as 10%. LorAnn is usually a little weaker than tpa in general, but some can be very strong, i.e., LorAnn's Amaretto is good at just 2%. Most cherry flavors I've tried require less than most of the other flavors within a brand (cherry is difficult). Capella usually calls for 15-20% for me, but it's good stuff. If your PG/VG ratio is higher in VG than mine (80/20 PG/VG) you will most likely need more flavoring. At least for me, VG seems to mute the flavor so I'm guessing a high VG liquid would need more flavoring than I use. You just need to play with small batches. To get an estimate of how much flavoring I need for 10 mls, I mix some in one ounce of sweetened water and just taste it.I have a question.First off let me state I like strong juices like pluid ecto and such.I have bunch of dyi stuff comin some tpa lorann capella.now I know diff stuff needs diff %'s but if you mix em too strong do they taste really bad or just too strong?

That mixing with a shot of water sounds like a good starting point. And may save some wasted mixing supplies. I'll have to give that a try. Do you judge by odor, taste, or both?? I know the flavors won't carry exacly the same in water but I'm guessing it's pretty close.
I judge by taste, also scent, but have found I can count on taste better. It's OK to swallow it too. That mixing with a shot of water sounds like a good starting point. If you mean a lower nicotine level, just add your preferred PG/VG base with no nicotine and add more flavoring. In other words, if you want a 12 mg juice, put 5 mls (or however much you want) and add 5 mls of PG/VG including more flavoring.can someone tell me how do i make a DIY juice i made at 24mg nic to lesser? Thanks alot
You can download a stand alone ejuice calculator here:
eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator
Comes with a tone of recipes, you can edit and save them and create new ones. It will handle up to 5 flavors.
I have been considering doing DIY juice for a while and your link to the software just pushed me over the edge. THANK YOU!
My wife is going to "love" this.
Hi godspeed! Welcome to DIY! First you need to know your PG/VG ratio preference, i.e., mine is 80/20 PG/VG. Since most flavorings used for e-liquid DIY are in a PG base, I make a large mix of 75/25, PG/VG. Then you need to know what your nicotine mg preference is. You can get PG or VG nicotine liquid in a variety of strengths. I go back and forth between 6 mg and 12 mg base. So, when I make my big bottle base, I fill 1/4 of the bottle with 24 mg nicotine VG and 3/4 with PG, cap bottle, and shake, shake, shake to give me a nicotine base of 6 mg. When flavoring is added, the nic strength will go down a little, so you might want to adjust accordingly.
I bought plain, see-through condiment bottles (used for ketchup and mustard, etc.) at Walmart. I think they were about $1.00 each and look like they hold about 16 ounces of liquid. They come with a screw-on cap with a pointy nozzle that has a small snap-on cap. They are easy to fill and make squirting their contents into a small bottle easy. I just eye-ball where to make marks on the big bottle with a sharpie marker in 1/4 increments. If I want a base of 12 mg nic, I would do the same except I would use 48 mg nicotine VG instead.
It is very important to buy quality PG, VG and nicotine PG or VG liquid. Since my preference has a lot of PG, I do not add any water. I would only add water if my base liquid was too thick (high viscosity). Don't try to save money by adding water. Use it very carefully, only to thin out a liquid that is too thick (like Daveymist said).
The higher nicotine base liquid will last longer, but you will need to add extra VG or PG. I "kill two birds with one stone" by getting nicotine liquid in a strength that adds the correct amount of nicotine and VG at the same time.
Hope this helps and you have fun with DIY. Best wishes to you!
... Can I purchase flavoring from the grocery store and use it, or does it have to come from Lorann/Capella/etc?
Wow.. this is fabulous! After almost 15 months of trying many, many juice vendors and too many flavors to count, I've finally decided on two or three juices that I keep going back to. And I'm thinking it might be time to try a little DIY... it's a bit overwhelming though. I've read every sticky but I'm still a little confused... I generally use 70/30 pg/vg so should I buy my nic in pg base? And is there anything wrong with getting 100mg nic and diluting it with equal amount of pg to make a 50mg mix to work with? I understand the dangers of nic and I have no children around so I don't worry about that. I've downloaded the calculator and it seems.... well, not easy maybe, but do-able. Many thanks to all of you... great info here!
