This is almost a little embarrassing. I;m usually the one giving all the advice to everyone I know. I was literally chastised by every single person I came across 7 years ago when I started vaping. EVERYONE made fun of me with my KR808 PCC. Now, they all vape (I hope they feel bad). I'll take the hit, I was a pioneer in my city, at least many have dropped the stinkies. Enough sob story.

I've been posting about going back to MTL. About 2 1/2 years ago I got caught up in watt wars, giant coils and plumes. Started using devices and builds at 80+ watts etc. I've a made a decision to return to single coils, lower power and decrease juice consumption. I also decided to step up my nic from 3-6 because 3 barely gave me satisfaction unless my lungs were ready to explode with vapor. So here is the issue.

On my Kayfun 5 and Merlin I get a very harsh draw with 6mg. I'm coughing later that night, throat irritation and in the morning those first pulls are rough. So 6mg nic too strong right? Wrong. I can drip the 6mg all day long no issues. Yea its a tad stronger than 3 but I actually like it, feels like a little TH on dripper for the first time. So this boils down to my builds or something else.

Building along time, my coils are fine. I've tried contact, spaced, clapton, fused, twisted, .5-1.5 you effin name it. All harsh in both tanks. Now If I put the power wayyyy down its smoother yes and I think this just might be my issue. With the kayfun the airflow is sooo tight (compared to DL tanks these days I think the difference between 10w and 15w is massive. Whereas on another dual coil setup 5w wouldn't even be noticeable. I have a SS clapton in the merlin with the MTL screw removed (with it in it was brutally harsh, thinking single wire coils with the restrictor in)@ 0.4 and it seems to be less irritable below 20 watts. However this results in 10 sec pulls and pretty cool vapor. The kayfun has a 28g spaced 2.5mm SS coil @ 1.0 ohm. This seems to only be comfortable at 12 watts and below. Now I've messed with TC but it always seems to throttle me down immediately and take even longer to get a hit and doesnt ever really feel warmer than power mode.

So all in all I think I'm just vaping it wrong. It's hard to try and go back when I'm used to instant lung hits, I think I just keep turning up the power and with so little airflow the tanks are producing harsh draws. My main dripper is a narda which is by no means open, but definitely more restrictive than these dual coil drippers out there. I see people claim they run these tanks at close to 30w with single coils and claptons and such. Perhaps I just need to re-learn how to take long draws with low power. Anyone care to share experiences?

I vape one of my KF V5 with 28 awg spaced SS316L 2.5 mm 0.8 ohm at 12 watts and it is a perfect vape.No need to crank it up at all.

I used to direct lung vape at 15-25 watts and ocassionally go up to 40 watts.

I went back to Kayfun lite plus V2 because i missed MTL vaping. Now i vape at 7.5-10 watts with a .8 ohm coil.

There is only one right way to vape. (The one that works for you and keeps you off the stinkies).

If you find a way that works stick with it. If it doesnt work keep trying till you find a way that does!

Thanks everyone. I agree with the lower wattage. I think I've just become soooo accustomed to pumpimg it u pto 60w right off the back that I'm training myself again. This merlin is hitting fantastic right now woth the clapton at 20w. I use anywhere from 70-80vg. It's like learning all over again.

Flavor is still a bit muted through. I mean it's good but def not better than my NarDa, which I dont think any tank could reproduce. But I swear, some of these dual coil big build tanks put out soo much flavor to me

I think some of my best flavor tanks are midrange powered dual coils for me in TC with modest power (30-40W, 440F) after a preheat to get the mass of metal up to temp. I'm not a big fan of a hot vape, just a nice warm is good for me. While obviously a setup like that produces a fair amount of cloud, the flavor is terrific.

I like my Merlin for flavor as well, but I've compared a simple coil to a twisted triple, but other than a bit more power needed, not a big difference in flavor. At some point I'm going to try a parallel coil for comparison.

It does come down to a combination of expectation and comparison. On a recent trip I needed to go stealth and used a Triton mini on CF4 18650 at 13W with my usual ADV juice just pumped up to 18 mg nic from 6 mg to hold me better. The first day was a kinds bummer with less flavor than I like, but enough nic to hold me. By the middle of the week, it tasted OK as I acclimated to it. But when I got home and pulled out my Triade with an OBS Engine with dual Claptons, it was like returning to Eden.

There are so many vape styles and so many factors that alter flavor that what can seem good one day might be a disappointment the next. One thing I think is important to me is not to judge a vape until after a tank, not just a few puffs (unless it tastes like something even the dog wouldn't touch). My palette needs a bit of time to adjust.

I have about 10 Kayfuns in different models from the Lite Plus V2, the 3.1, the KF4, and my newest that came in last week, the Tobeco KF5. All are close in vapor and flavor.

I get the best flavor and favor with a 2.5mm coil and a tight KGD wick. I compress the wick by rolling it in my fingers and then wet my fingers and roll the end really tight to make a 1/4" end section that will enter the coil. Then, I twist the wick to make it spiral through the coil, cut it to size and tuck the ends down into the wick channels.

I know that sounds radical, but much looser and the flavor and vapor drop off considerably. Twisting the wick makes the spirals of the coil propel it through. I got tired of hot coils where the wick relaxed away from the top of the coil when the ends were tucked.

I never took to lung hits for vaping. My Augvape Merlin has been my all day vape since I purchased it in June and I refuse to vape anything less than 12mg.

You don't need fancy coils and high wattage for MTL vaping. My standard build for the Merlin is 6-7 spaced wraps of 26ga kanthal at 3mm ID. I vape that setup @ 25 Watts using the restricter in the air hole and the air slots closed down to a small circle on either side. And vaping it this way, there's no harshness or irritation at all....for me.

Perhaps play with the coil height above the air hole. If it's to high the vape will tend to be harsher.

Vaping a MTL tank is all about slow, longer, easy hits that are similar to smoking a cigarette. If you hot boxed a Marlboro you got hot, harsh hits. I think it's the same way with a MTL tank. Hit it too hard and the experience changes.

Maybe those who come from the loose draw of a DTL tank tend to rush the vapor formation. Slow down and hit lightly for a 5 second pull and a cooler vape.
