OK, I’ve seen that. You can go online and see the mail you’re supposed to get. Are you saying it’s advisable to opt out? I have neighbors who used it to find out the mailman was dumping mail in the woods.
No, I’m saying you should opt in and claim your address. Otherwise, a thief could sign up using your address, then monitor the mail you get. Tax docs, check, CC statements — good for identity theft. And they’d be able to see when you’re getting a package.
I don’t know if USPS runs a verification in the background when you sign up so they could confirm that you actually live there. People say, no, they don’t. Didn’t seem like they did.
There was no identity verification process. You could get a code in the mail to verify you, or you give them your cell number. I gave my cell number but I didn’t get a code. A thief could just give their own cell number.
Offering the service is a good idea, but it seems to be poorly implemented and rife with potential problems.
