Speaking of doing things differently...I hired a mechanic to swap my rack n pinion on my truck. It's leaking out of the pinion seal and it's not going to get better. Actually there are two reasons why I hired out instead of doing it myself. One, I'll spend a couple hours rolling around on the garage floor then spend the next week in traction. Just not worth it anymore. This old fart has had enough of that nonsense. Two, I see there's a decent chance the steering shaft will get wrecked pulling the old rack out. The mechanic has tools and equipment to repair the shaft in the event he damages it vs what I have. So like David, it's time to quit skimping and just do what's best.
I just shelled out $470 to get the front rotors and pads replaced on my Expedition . It kills me that I could have done that for half of that amount but it just isn't worth possibly injuring my back in the process . It takes quite awhile to heal from fusion surgery at our age , I don't have my strength back yet . Best not to push your luck and hurt yourself in the process .

Yeah, that's a ripoff. Not a labor intensive job either but no, you're too messed up and can't do that kind of work without paying a big health price. You have no choice. Bend over and pay the man.

Having a lift and an impact wrench makes it a helluva lot easier for them than it is for me . Just geting the wheels off would have had me hurting for days .

Oh yeah. If I had a lift I wouldn't think twice about doing it myself. Makes all the difference in the world. He's probably gonna charge me a few hundred and in as much as it kills me to pay that it's still better than gimping around for the next week. I basically rebuilt my entire truck a few years ago except for the engine and tranny. But the steering, suspension, brakes, and a bunch of other stuff has been replaced and now the rack completes it. If I tried doing that now I'd die. In fact, I just flat cannot do it anymore. I have an online mechanic buddy who has MS. He's a career mechanic and as bright as it gets with automobiles. But his MS absolutely prohibits him from working on his cars anymore. It kinda hurts him but he's accepted it and just hires out now. He's our age.
