I vape button down or diagonal to the right; and with an o-ring on my reo 18490 the hole is to the sky. Knucklehead drip tip helps make the angle most convenient and avoids juice mouth. With a SS wick, listen for a cute little gurgle and then squonk to avoid dry hits!

ya me loves those Knucklehead DTs they rock dont they ?

Hey guys so I just got my Hornet.... but I feel like I'm not doing something right. I set my coil and wick and put the cap back on and made sure that the air hole was on the side of the coil. I'm definitely getting a real tight draw but not getting too much vapor... AND the Hornet itself is getting REALLY hot (I think because my coil is close to the walls inside which is heating it up). Is this just common with the Hornet? or am I setting the coil on the wrong side? Is there even a right or wrong side to set the coil? I'm going to keep playing around with it to see if I get better results.

The Hornets and ERA's have a pretty tight draw which can limit vapor production. A lot of people, if not most, end up either drilling out the air hole to 1/16th or using a rat tail file to open up the hole. That will probably take care os your concerns.

All of my ERA's and Hornet are opened up, makes all the difference in the world.

Gioajack does your Hornet still get hot after you opened it up? Maybe mine is hot because the air hole is too tight and the vapor/coil heat is not venting out as well... I read that people have drilled out the hole but I'm worried I'll end up ruining my Hornet. I don't want to cause damage to a $75 RBA that I JUST BOUGHT lol. I probably will have to do that though because I'm not getting clouds of vapor like I was with the Reomizer.

Pretty much any RBA gets hot, that's why I never use metal drip tips, they just get way too warm for me.

If you have a Hobby Lobby near you, (Michaels or any good craft store I imagine), you can pick up a pack of micro files. (They're in the decorative bead section, Hobby Lobby keeps them in a locked glass case.) There are 4 files in the pack, 2 rat tail files) that are perfect for opening the air hole. It takes a few minutes longer than drilling it out but you can tailor the opening to your liking and there's much less chance of making a mistake. The whole pack sells for less than $5.

I would remember to not over squonk. It does not take a big squonk like the REOmizer as the feed hole trhu the post is much smaller so when you squeeze the bottle it shoots up pretty easy. I noticed this when i switched. I never flooded my Reomizer and hit like a bazooka. The Hornet will also but on much less juice on the coil. I would take the top off and squonk while your looking at it and you will see how much comes out. You can then use as a reference point. If the Hornet is slightly flooded it won't produce much vapor at all.

This is the exact set of files I got....and they work great. lazyymatt, I had to ream out both my ERAs and my Hornet to get the looser draw, which I like. The files are "slow" enough that you won't have to worry about doing too much. Just stop and test it every now and then. I think making the hole bigger will solve most if not all of your problem.

I think the hole size depends greatly on how you vape. I take a few little draws, not long draws, so the smaller ERA and Hornet holes are just right for me. I have to close off the REOmizer hole a bit as too airy. Same for A7 where I close one of the holes on fitting. As I said, it really depends on how you vape, how you take your draws. And, in the future, if you want to close down a hole a bit, JB Weld, non toxic can be used to close the hole, from inside, and then drilled/reamed out to your liking.

I have drilled out all of my ERA's and Hornet to 1/16 & LOVE them airy! It took a little getting used to but I get plumes and they get warm but not excessively hot. Also there's a drill bit 1 size smaller then a 1/16 I believe it's 1/32 but you have to take your time cuz the bits break easy trying to drill through stainless

So I went to Hobbys and looked for the files but I couldn't find what you guys were talking about. I asked the people there and they couldn't find it either but I ended up buying this hand drill set that came with small drill bits. I tried to do it by hand but it did not work so I stuck it on a drill that I actually had and I was able to poke through. I think I used the second smallest bit it came with which was something like 0.056 inches and its already made a difference. By 1/16 does that mean a 0.0625 inch bit? The biggest bit my kit came with was 0.07 and it looked a little too big. Either way I'm now pretty happy with the Hornet. I like how it's like a regular atty in that the juice goes up the post. The Reomizer had like two holes which made using the o ring necessary but the Hornet doesn't need one and it doesn't seem like it will leak. Now I need some better tasting juice because my current juice is a little meh right now and my order is coming tomorrow or Saturday. After this order I think I'm gonna venture into the world of DIY juices so ill definitely need some more help from y'all again! Thanks for the help everyone

Got in my new Surface to go along with my Hornet.
Surface is nice but I like the Hornet better. I like the tighter draw and smaller size of the Hornet. If it only had a screw off cap like the Surface it would be perfect! After shipping from Europe the Surface was $56.00, next time I am going to spend and extra $20.00 and get another Hornet as I think it's worth it. I love the center post feed system of the Hornet and slight more room to work. I like the fatter but shorter style.
I will say however that the Surface is very well made, nice finish, nice threads and machining, just seems to tall and could cut down the length a bit as alot of wasted space on top. surface vs hornet.jpgRudys B 2.jpg

I love my Hornets especially on the REO Mini 1.0. Using shorty DTs on the A7 Mini and Surface make them a little better in terms of height. I'll add, I'm more okay with the taller RBAs on the Mini REO 2.0 (18490) than on the Mini 1.0. The Mini 2.0 is bulkier so the tall RBAs seems a bit more balanced than on Mini 1.0.

I agree. :)
Actually I'm thinking even though my Surface just came in and I only used it for 1 day that I am going to place it in the classys and try and get some money back to order another Hornet. When you think of the days when we smoked stinky analogs, (they are $8.50 a pack here in CT) so spending another $75.00 for a Hornet is really only 9 days of regular cigarette smoking! The Surface came to over $50.00 after shipping so really not that much cheaper than a Hornet. - Don't you like the way I justify things to buy more toys???

:toast: You belong to a huge "club." When we first started vaping we couldn't afford the almost $1K a month we were spending on analogs. But I'm still justifying spending way too much money on vaping "toys" after 2.5 years vaping.

{edit} I just ordered my third liter of 100 mg nic juice today and another 100 ft roll of 30 Kanthal and we have 1 gallon of VG and three gallons of PG. Stocking up for when we can't buy much of anything. I have the same attitude about RBAs.

{second edit} I'll qualify the above by correcting........ shouldn't afford anything.

In my anxiety of waiting for my hornet, I picked up some 32 ga Kanthal A1 (the only ga they had) and made this coil by heating it up until red 3 times then wrapping around machine screw, then backing out the screw. Don't have anything to compare it to, so in wondering if you think it is on the right track? Thank you.
