Roughly $1.35 a pack when I started.. $10 a pack when I quit.. The Tax alone on cigarettes in NY is more than the total cost in some states.. $4.35 tax per pack in NY state, plus another $1.50 on top of that in NYC.. So if you smoke in NYC you pay $5.85 in tax per pack.. And people wonder why NY wants to ban e-juice...

In 1964, when I started smoking, a pack of cigarettes in Chicagoland was about 30¢ per pack.
In 2011, before I quit, I would make the trek to the county immediately north of Cook County. Cigarettes were only $65 per carton, while in Chicagoland, they were $77 per carton. Every three weeks I would buy six cartons, thus saving $72 in taxes.

Yeah buddy I remember getting a discount for buying a carton, that stopped here in Maryland Years ago.

I bought my first pack for 99 cents. It was in a basket that they were getting rid of. When I quit I was spending $33 a carton. The most I paid was $6.
A better way to look at it is how much compared to minimum wage. I was making $4.25ish an hour and packs were about $2.00ish back in the 90's. So a pack was roughly 1/2 hour's work.
It appears that "raping" smokers with excessive taxation is a worldwide occurrence.
i grew up in Holland and started smoking 17 years ago. cigarettes were 3.30 Dutch Guilders, which back then was about $1.90 per pack. when i quit smoking, cigarettes in my city in the USA were between $9.85 and $10.50 depending on where they were purchased.
Less the 50 cents a packs back in 1976. The most I have paid was $15.00 If I remember right it was late night Airport ... <sigh>
I remember buying smokes for my Dad in the late sixties they were 65 cents a pack of 25 in the late 70's when i started they were all ready close to 2.00 for 25 and when I quite last year they were 10.50 for a pack of 25 I'm glad I don't smoke any more

$1.99 started in '98 when I was 13 :-/ Last month $6.99 I will be saving about $350 a month!!!!
Cigs in NJ are about 8 in ny>10 in nyc >12. the lowest price I paid was $3.10/pack, years ago.
They were 25 cents a pack when I started (1960-ish) and the last pack I bought was $7.
