Hi everyone! I've been lurking for about a week, overdosing on information as I tried to figure out whether to give e-cigs a try, and what kind. I found this forum pretty quickly during my first google search, and I'm very glad I did so wanted to introduce myself and start getting to know people here.

I started smoking almost 25 years ago, back when it was a social thing to do. Ironically, it's become so hard to smoke anywhere that it's not a social thing for me anymore. Pretty much the only place I smoke is at home and in my car. Granted, I work from home much of the time, so that's still a lot of smoking - can go anywhere from 1 to 2 packs per day, depending on projects and phone use.

The strangest part of my smoking habit is that I can, if necessary, go for hours and hours without a cigarette. But at the first opportunity, I smoke like a fiend again. So restaurants, bars, airplanes, visits with non-smokers, are not so much a problem. But as soon as I'm alone and in my own space, the cigarettes come back out.

I can't say that I really want to stop smoking, sort-of. I've been successful at living in denial about the effects on my health - I don't cough, my blood pressure is fine, etc. I guess, in my head, I planned to quit "someday", but was never quite ready to. No doubt I'm addicted to the nicotine, but I'm also hugely addicted to the hand/mouth action. Smoking is an activity, a pacifier, a comfort, a way to mark time. It's a way to put off doing something else, and to pass time until something. I "need" smoking.

So why look into e-cigarettes now? Because I need the smoking activity (I really, really do), but everything about cigarettes was becoming a bigger and bigger pile of suck.

The thing that finally got me was the constant battle against smell and smoke. Oh, the gajillions of air fresheners and cleaners and fans and sprays and candles and incense and carbon HVAC filters I've used! And then there was my habit of cracking windows open all the time, winter or summer, thereby sending all my heat and air conditioning outside, while somehow still managing to contain way too much smoke and smell in my house. I would go into cleaning and air freshening frenzies before friends or family were to visit. I change into different clothes as soon as I come home, to try to minimize the smell on my work and other clothes.

When I found myself contemplating spending major $$$$ on a whole house air purifier system thingie (which probably wouldn't work anyway)....I took a deep breath, lit a cigarette (or many), and tried to get a grip and considered my options.

I've tried quitting before, with little success. Which leads me to my thread title - I was so afraid to try e-cigs because...what if that DIDN'T WORK either?? Then what? So when my package came, I dithered. I didn't open it for a day or so. And then I made sure to carefully charge each battery and read all the instructions. And read more threads here. When I finally screwed the thing together, I think that's when I really faced my fear that this might not do the trick for me and I'd been afraid to hope that maybe, just maybe...

It's only been a few days now, but I'm so relieved already. I've averaged about 5 or 6 cigarettes these last few days, and during each one, I keep asking, "hmm, is this really better than the e-cig? do I really want this more?" I'm not sure that I do.

So the hope is alive that I can eventually transition and give up the smokey sticks entirely. As well as the air freshener aisle at the store!

Hello Izabella! Congratulations on making the switch!! May I ask what you bought and are using? If so some of us here may be able to give you some tips, tricks or advice on it.

I'm glad you got over the fear of trying it and that you are surprised. Most of us are very pleasantly surprised because it's SO MUCH better than what we think it's going to be. Keep at it, and eventually you will start to enjoy vaping over smoking. Cigarettes will start to taste nasty and naturally you will smoke less.

Keep at it and keep us updated! If you need support, advice or anything else we are here!

Congrats! You sound like you're on your way!

It's cost me a small fortune to get rid of the smoke smell. Had to get the car detailed, wash everything I own, clean & paint!

But it is SO worth it. I'm no longer embarrassed to be around people in case I stink. No longer embarrassed to have people in my house. It's such a great feeling!

You will have extra fun, since you can smell and taste!

Even if you can't do either (like me) the groaning smorgasbord of electric hookah-doodle goo flavors all smell and taste so much better than tobacco cigarettes, it's a great motivational factor!

Oh, and you are going to love it here! We are all more fun than a basket of penguins!

Welcome to ECF and congrats on giving e-cigs a chance! It sounds like you're off to a great start!

I think most of us had the fear of "what if this doesn't work, either." We've all tried to quit so many times and with so many ways that we just give up on quitting. I really didn't get into e-cigs with the thought of quitting in mind. I just wanted something I could use so I wouldn't have to go outside or in my garage and freeze my ... off in the winter. I started with a crappy Green Smoke kit and I was still smoking, but cut down from a pack and a half per day to only half a pack. I really hated the GS, so I found this forum, got a refund for the GS and bought a Riva kit. I quit smoking the day I got my Riva. It was nothing short of a miracle and it was so LIBERATING!

I wish you the best in your vaping journey! You're in the right place and there's plenty of support and great people here! Pull up a chair, get yourself comfy and vape your head off!

Welcome Izabella....Do yourself a favor and dont think of it as quiting, just think like you are switching. It gets rid of the self imposed stress of quiting.....Good luck on your journey!

Good advice! I never did this with the thoughts of quitting either. I just wanted to smoke less. Who knew I wouldn't smoke at all!

What a good post izabella truthful and relateable, Good luck to you.
Of all the times I've tried and all the methods I've used.
Vaping has worked for me, I'm almost 3 weeks without smoking and already I feel a difference in my health.
No longer does my car smell or my home or me for that matter. No more ashtrays, no more lighters and matches.
Vaping has advanced so much in just a few years that it makes it, atleast to me more enjoyable than smoking ever has.

Good for you!! The same thoughts went through my mind. I never actually thought I could quit, but then I actually thought an e-cig tasted better. I smoked two cigarettes after I got my first kit, and the second one, I thought I would rather vape. I still, after 10 months sometimes have an urge for a cigarette, but it passes quickly.

Thanks so much for the welcomes and encouragement! And the basket of (non-smoking) penguins!

I ended up buying a kit from Vapor4Life, mostly based on recommendations here, especially those in lolady's thread (which I read from start to finish, as well as her blogs). Two-piece easy-peasy is about all I can handle right now. Everything else seemed so intimidating and overwhelming.

I almost bought the GreenSmoke kit, but thought it was too expensive - $40 for a replacement battery seemed way too high, and their cartomizers are also expensive. For an ongoing switch to e-cigs, I didn't want to be paying that much. So when I searched for Greensmoke reviews and alternatives, I wound up here. I tell ya - Greensmoke and others like them get newbies because they make it so easy to understand if you don't understand at all.

So I'm good with what I have at this point, just a few days into it. It's been pretty amazing actually in that it has been easy. Yesterday I went until 1pm without a cigarette - the first one with my morning coffee is the one I love the most, so it was strange to feel like I wasn't depriving myself.

Ok, I'm off to visit my parents - my first attempt at vaping in the car instead of smoking! I'll report back on how it goes.

Again, thank you so much for the support!

Welcome. You brought up something I hadn't thought of before. There are many threads here about money we save/don't save since starting to vape. Everyone has basically considered the cost of cigarettes, but what about the air freshners, cleaning, and lost money through heat because of open windows? If we took all that into consideration, our savings would go way up.
Oh and good luck, and so glad you found ECF.

I can totally relate to that since I smoked for the following reasons...

-Taking breaks from work
-Taking breaks from social situations I found uncomfortable
-Taking breaks from domestic squabbles
-Taking breaks before doing things I didn't want to do
-Taking breaks after doing things I didn't want to do
-Taking breaks to be alone with my thoughts and think things through

I started vaping because if I didn't start vaping I would have smoked for the rest of my life.

Welcome Izabella :) Just relax, stop worrying about if the vaping is better than the smoking or if this is going to do it for you. Possibly that anxiety is getting in the way of enjoying your ecig. Just use it, try different things, different flavours. If it happens anything like whole loads of us here then one day you will smoke a cigarette and realise they just plain taste bad and that your vape is far more enjoyable. Even if you stay vaping and having a few smokes a day that is still a success - every cigarette you don't smoke is a win for you. As someone has said, think of it as you are considering switching how and what you smoke, not quitting. And stick with ECF as it really is a mine of info on ecigs, relax, enjoy.

Thirty five + years I smoked and my wife almost as long, neither of us want or need a cigarette any more. If we can do it anyone can!

Vaping in the car = good. I had both batteries with me, different flavors, and they kept me entertained during my long drive. Better yet, I did not have to open the windows in the car to let any smoke out. It was a sweltering day here, so I was able turn the air on, windows closed, while I vaped to my heart's content. I saw some smokers in their cars, windows open, sweating, and knew that would have been me a few days ago. But not today!

I'm glad you got over the fear of trying it and that you are surprised. Most of us are very pleasantly surprised because it's SO MUCH better than what we think it's going to be. Don't laugh...well, ok, you can laugh...but one of the things that put me off e-cigs? Allison Dubois. No reason you should know who she is, unless you happened to catch the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills episode with the quack psychic Allison at dinner with the Ho's. She pulled out an e-cig after dinner and turned into a nasty little shrew as she vaped away at the table. The shrew part wasn't the e-cig's fault - that was more likely the fault of the cocktails as big as her head that she had downed, but there she was, .....y as hell, vaping away. It was a horrific and yet terribly amusing sight, and the worst advertisement for e-cigs ever!

It's cost me a small fortune to get rid of the smoke smell. Had to get the car detailed, wash everything I own, clean & paint!

That is so going to be me! I'm already feeling the itch to scrub everything in sight. Other people are all excited to have a three-day weekend so they can grill and watch pretty fireworks...I'm thinking I can use the extra day off to crank up the ipod speakers, line up my cleaning supplies like little soldiers and declare war on lingering cigarette odors. My version of independence day, heh.

Give yourself some time to get used to vaping, don't worry about smoking a few analogs during the transition.

Welcome Izabella....Do yourself a favor and dont think of it as quiting, just think like you are switching. It gets rid of the self imposed stress of quiting.....Good luck on your journey!

THIS. I really need to give myself permission to relax and enjoy the vaping and just let it work itself out, rather than putting pressure on myself to "quit".

I didn't quit; I switched. ...And it was a total upgrayyd! I smell nice, my mouth tastes nice, I can shred my throat if I want to, I can OD if I'm bored, I can play with huge clouds of vapor, I can stealth vape, etc, etc, etc. Vaping rocks! Welcome, izabella. I hope you learn to love vaping, too.

Ah, thank you for the reminder to embrace the fun of vaping, the flavors, the new toy to play, the new and BETTER toy. Rock on.

Oh and good luck, and so glad you found ECF.

I could probably feed a small third-world country for a year with how much I've spent over the years on a losing battle to rid myself of the "not so fresh" feeling.

You my friend, totally get me. I can add to that list...

- Taking smoke breaks to celebrate something good that happened
- Taking breaks to savor the satisfaction of a job well done, or something completed
- Taking breaks before doing things I want to do
- Taking breaks after doing things I wanted to do
- Taking breaks to prepare for doing anything
- Taking breaks from preparing to do something
- Taking breaks because now I'm prepared to do something, but haven't started doing it yet
- Smoking while doing something...the phone, the spreadsheet, the powerpoint, the phone, the conference call, the email, the phone...

I could go on, but you already know. Smoking fills in the blanks.

Inspiring words, and bless you and your wife.

I found myself almost accidentally gravitating to the e-cig concept. Two weeks ago, it wasn't a thought that rattled around anywhere in my head. So, if I let it be fun instead of "a mission", I can see how I might switch. However, someone recently told me I was highly "results oriented", which is great for work, but not so great for play. So thank you for the advice to chill the hell out, which I need to staple to my forehead.

I'm a simple girl - vanilla and chocolate is working for me. But I have some waffles and licorice and caramel on their way, so yeah.
