A quote from somebody smarting than me " It is hard to mess up a kayfun" I roll my wicks real tight and you (and most people do not roll wicks tight) and it works for both of us....thats all that counts. However how you have yours setup we may end up with about the same amount of cotton as I only hang down touching the deck.
This is how I wick when I'm doing horizontal coils.
I never roll my cotton to squish it. I tear out a lump of cotton, and smooth it out towards both ends to get it skinnier and stop when it's slighter fatter than my coils. At this point the cotton is completely fluffy still. Then I roll it very very very lightly; it's to get it in shape (cylindrical), not to squish it so that it fits. Once it's in, I can very very easily slide my cotton to and fro without resistance from the coil
Snip off excess:
Fold the little end over. Juicing the wick makes it super easy to shape it
Works like a charm for me; and I never get dry hits. Also using 1/16 drill bit at either 15watts or 19 watts.

In any case the most important part about "amount" of cotton isn't really about the amount of wick at the end, more of how much wick is stuffed within the coil. When people refer to a coil/wicked getting choked, it's because the cotton in the coil is so compressed that juice have a hard time getting wicked to the cotton within the coil. This becomes even more important when you have thick juice or those with a ton of particulate matter like Boba's.
ETA: I must qualify myself. The amount of cotton at the deck def does matter of course. Just not what I was referring to hahahaha

Oh! It's triple 32gauge twisted kanthal. 3 strands of 32ga, very very tightly twisted using a handdrill.
Used to scoff at all the bold claims about twisted wires; I hate exaggerated claims about new builds/products etc. until I tried it myself. It's all I ever use these days.

Yup! There are endless permutations of wires: diff number of round wires, diff number of diff gauges in 1, ribbon only, multiple ribbons, ribbon + twisted, multiple twisted ribbon counter twisted together....

No we agree....there are alot of ways to setup a kayfun.....as long as it wicks and works then all is good. I take pointers from all the posters and then use what works best for me....

Right up there with my old KF 3.1. The draw is a bit tighter, since i ran my 3.1 without the AFC screw. The flavor is rich, and warm, which is the way I like it.
Looking forward to receiving my second one tomorrow, to see how it does with my current coiling and wicking method.
I also don't think these have to be setup picture perfect to get good results. I am surprised sometimes when people come in and post they cant get it working right. Maybe because I have set them up so many times... i could probably set one up with my eyes closed now.

That still shocks me the cotton lasts that long or the coil without dry burning.
Then again I vape allot of darker juices; coffees, vanilla beans and I know those are total coil eaters. My coil will last a while but it gets dry burned on a daily basis.

You mentioned you change your wick every refill..... I have found the vape gets even better a I run a take of juice through it.....just a thought....
Lol. It's all in the juice. This is from 3 quarter tank of custard + coffee. It was naaaaasty

Hmmmm I'll have to try that and see how it works out. I was having issues with my kanger coils bit holding up for long; which, was what made me make the initial switch to RBAs; so I've been kind of vigilant and a freak about being extra careful about the setup.
The juice he is using in that setup is 25% flavor also maple walnut I think had to give everything a good cleaning when I took it apart.... All my juices are alcohol bases 2.5% flavor
Looks familiar. I had a tiramisu a few weeks back that did that too me. Tasted great but when I saw that I was glad I didn't spring for a 30ml bottle.
More I think about it though I'm gonna try mrgrick's move and see how this vanilla custard holds up with the cotton for a few tanks. I almost feel bad changing out the cotton sometimes; because, it'll look good but my OCD kicks in and info throwing it a way and cleaning the deck and all like a total freak.
I was rebuilding my kanger coils with cotton before I switched over to kayfun
I'm doing that now for my fiancés set up- she loves the tumblr from smoktech; I believe. It uses kanger coils. I rebuild hers with silica in the coil and a cotton flavor wick.
