I had same problem. Was getting constant dry hits from all the builts I did (Micro/Cotton, Ekowool, Figure 8 Silica) over the course of 1 month. Always thought it was my poor coild building skill or something. The main gears I use are OMEGA RDA dual coils at 0.6ohm on my mech which puts out very good flavor so it wasn't detrimental that I couldn't get my Kayfun/Russian to work. Switched juice recently and it worked immediately. Tried about 4 more new builts with 4 more different juices and all wicked every single time. I didn't even bother with Micro/Cotton or Ekowool and not even figure 8. Just 3mm silica folded once, 6 wraps 28 gague which comes out to 1.1ohm. Worked okay on the mech but works much better on my Provari vaping at 4 volts (sometimes I can get up to 4.1) before E2 error pop up. I was planning to experiment with sub-ohm coils so I can use it on my mech but I'm too scare to. LOL. After 1 month of frustration, I finally locked down a build I can get to work every time so I am not planning to do anything different for a long while. I have 4 provaris collecting dusts anyway, and finally I can put them to good use. :D

at 1.1 ohm it has to work better on a vv device because you can use much more voltage with it. usually the voltage with a mech after voltage loss is about 3.8v, and that's for a short time as it constantly goes lower. imo you need resistances at or below .8 ohms on a mech for it to be a more powerful vape then a vv device

Having 3 KFs, I strive to get all 3 running consistent. I have 2 rolling strong, but the last one no matter what I throw at it, it will not produce flavor. Vapor is ridiculous, but the flavor is kinda gross.

Could this be a hardware issue, like cleaning? Perhaps below the deck? The insulator looks a tad off in color, and smashed a little. Could this produce that result?

A tad off in color as in burnt?

Nah, couldn't say burnt. More like a pinkish color.

Edit: but definitely smashed. Just gives a horrid flavor and tons of vapor. I've ran cotton yarn & balls both to no avail.

Are you set ups 100% identical? Same coil, same wick, same everything? Here's a couple things to try...

Try removing your wick/coil from a "good" KF and installing it in your one "bad" kayfun and see what happens.

One other thing...try boiling your Kayfun for about 20 minutes. Be sure to take off the rubber and plastic pieces first. Can't boil those. :) I've had some RBA's get nasty flavor and after I boil it, it is fine.

I guess I've been fortunate. I haven't had any wicking trouble from day one. I learned how to wick the KFL on this thread too.

I've had pretty good luck with mine, as well. If anything, I've always had a tendency to use plenty of cotton; maybe even a tad too much, at times. Never too little.

I never have heard in all my vaping days of someone having a bad taste in their device and after a clean everythings good to go. so tbh I don't believe by cleaning your device it will solve the issue but I could be wrong. the only thing in the device that it possibly could be is maybe the plastic tank, if this tank is breaking down by some of those tank cracker juices it could be leaching out, but then again this sounds hard to believe. maybe the insulator? possible but also hard to believe. my guess is either the juice or the build or placement of the coil. if I had to place money on it I would say there is a short somewhere.

Smashed as in the coil is touching it (or near it)?

Good call. I will try the boiling part first. Once I get a KF running smoothly, I don't like to jack with it until it needs a wick change. I will disassemble sometime this week, and give it a thorough boiling/cleaning.

Thanks.

Diver, I had a friend send me an RBA once awhile back (he visits this thread now and again). He "cleaned" it before he sent it to me but I still got a nasty taste from whatever juice he was using in it. I cleaned it three times myself and could not get it out. He told me to boil it.

It worked! The nasty taste was 100% gone. I've done it a few times since and it works. Just don't put the meltable parts in the water!!! Steel only. Not saying this is Digs problem, but it's something to try that isn't much effort.

I hear you digs. I don't like jacking with it either if it is working fine. Don't forget to make sure you boil only the steel. Take off the o-rings, window segment, and insulators. I forgot once and melted the plastic tank (on a vivi nova). :)

If anyone's interested in a shorter kfl, the guys over at teamrampage have something called "kayfun nano body kits". From the pictures, it looks to shorten the kfl quite a bit.

I think I might pick one up.

I do not see how this is going to work unless it comes with a shorter vaporization chamber and/or shorter top cap mouth piece?? I went to the site and from the pics all you get in the kit are smaller tube pieces and nothing else??

The product pictures are confusing, as they only contain the two shorter rings that attach to the middle tank portion, but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume all the stainless parts in the pic I posted are part of the package.

Good share there - ya R!
Yes, they have cut everything... the chamber, the chimney and the tank rings to 'dwarf' the KFL. The only downsize to this config. is that now it'd hold just about 2ml juice. If you are Ok with that - this is for you. I'd like to keep mine 'full-sized' though.

I like the idea of replacement tank rings. RV makes great vape gear. I used there Term-C tanks, I have there 22LE switch.. I was waiting for there hybrid adapter to restock. I will order the "Nano Body Kit", but would like the hybrid adapter to go with the order. The only negative i have with there orders, i have to sign for the parcel.
