Ok, I did the 8/7 wraps; for some reason it came out to 1.9 ohms; I suspect leg length, since I really have no idea how to figure that, but 1.9 ohms is still perfectly acceptable; my preference is really for anything between 1.6 and 2 ohms.
Compressing it did work better than with 30ga, though I did mess up the first one I tried, I think by squeezing a bit too firmly while firing -- ceramic tweezers, I'm not crazy, I assure you. It's defintely easier to compress than 28ga, but not as flimsy as 30ga, so I had more success with the 2nd one, which is the one that came out to 1.9 ohms.
I'll know more once the wick breaks in and I use it
thru the day, but I think it's a good 'un. I'm definitely getting better at the wicking; I managed to get it smoothed down but not rolled tightly except at the very end where I needed to
thread it into the coil; it moved in the coil very easily, very little rubbing on the coil, just barely touching it all around.
