decided to try and make a coil that produced dry hits, what I found was the only way I could produce one was from a wick that was too thin, or not enough cotton. I also went the other way to see if a coil with to much cotton would produce a dry hit. after 3 attempts I couldn't make an overstuffed coil produce one. on my 3rd attempt I put in quite a bit, enough resistance that my coil moved to the side (i had to re-adjust it back)and about as much as I think anyone would attempt. although I didn't get any dry hits from these, I did find the flavor was quite a bit muted. so probably 6 different builds today, 3 with less then normal amounts that I usually use, and 3 with more then I usually use. out of all those, only 2 produced dry hits. these 2 were with less then normal amounts. the first less then normal amount I tried, was only slightly less cotton that I usually use, this vaped fine. it wasn't until I reduced further then I started to get a slightly dry hit. my 3rd time, I used a piece of cotton that slide right in, hardly no resistance at all. this after a few vapes was dry and nasty. when wicking normally, I use a piece that has some definite resistance as I slide
thru, almost to a point where I think its to much. i then move wick back and forth slightly shearing some of the fibers away from coiled area. i do this until the wick slides a little easier, but still has some resistance. i only form the cotton before inserting into a coil and never twist it first. by forming, i mean just pressing it to form a round kind of shape. i tried this today with a coil that was kind of average, and that most use. it was a 2mm coil, 1.3mm above deck/ 28g/ 11 wraps, at 1.4Ω. use a provari@ 4.3v. as usual, my coil was installed on an angle, which makes the wick tails run sort of across and down the deck. my wicks are 1 inch in total length and after i saturate them, i place them before installing chimney base. different types of cotton can produce different results, i use cvs sterile balls and have found them to be the best for my particular set ups. i know i cant cover every aspect of problems, and i am sure there are some issues that i haven't accounted for. also different juices, and different geographical locals but i personally believe, for the most part, that if your getting dry hits, you don't have enough cotton in your coil. like i said this statement may have more to it, and i wish it were 100 percent true for all, but at least in my builds, with all my specific configurations, i believe it to be 99 percent true. these pics below are my normal looking builds
