Since I ordered all black, I don't think the visual differences would be very noticeable. We won't know what they're doing until they arrive I guess.

Or maybe LV will apply their faux carbon fiber or snake skin finish and have a Frankenstein finished mod like the Paranormal. (joking!!)

90%?? I don’t own the original Drone, but interwebs sources claim the weight is about 275 grams sans batteries and atomizer. So the door makes up for 247 grams of that? Not a direct comparison but very similar - Triade sans battery and atomizer = 204 grams. It’s battery door = 42 grams or ~20% of the weight.

Ya you are right it’s closer to twenty. Although it depends in which direction your calculating. The new door is 20 percent of the old door which means there’s 80 percent of weight difference between them. But whatever, not the important thing.

I can’t see them going with the original door. They basically erase most of the advantages they were going for.

the new drone with the old door is heavier then the old drone with the new door.

The door is responsible 80-90 of the total weight difference comparatively.

Yeah, no way it was 90%. That was pulled out of the posters rear end.

Ayy my rear end where I keep my drones.

Well, no choice but to wait and see how they proceed. It'll also mean sending it out to beta test reviewers and all with the new build as it seems to be significantly different from the v1 they already circulated. But I can be patient if it ends up a more durable product.

Only one batch, if this one ends up being a winner that would be a disappointment. I understand that the orion has been successful, but can't understand them only focusing on that. How about a single 2X700 new version of the Therion? Just seems counterintuitive to focus solely on one product, hopefully there's some R&D going on in the background for more new products for those of us that don't use pods.

I wouldn’t hold my breath. The Drone, Triade and Paranormal are proof that Lost Vape takes a less risky road to design and manufacturing new products. So the question is why? I’d say it is because these items are not as profitable. To design something new from the ground up takes a significant investment vs just refreshing a previous model. They need to sell X amount in order to recoup their investment and generate a profit. And the way Lost Vape has positioned themselves in the market, I don’t believe they can sell enough products to recoup their investment and make a buck or 2 off a newly designed DNA mod.

As for the new Drone only having 1 batch run…we do not know what the pre-order figures are – they may not have met expectations so to mitigate loss in profit, which they are already in damage control with the poor plastic design, Lost Vape may scrap the project. It is unfortunate but it is a reality.

I disagree, it's been proven that when they make something people want that they sell extremely well. A lot of people were disappointed that they missed out on the OG Drone and all Lost Vape had to do was make some minor upgrades to it while keeping the body the same and it would have sold amazingly well. A new faceplate and chip with some more colours would've made this a hit. Someone at Lost Vape needs to be fired over this redesign.

Anyway, they've built a solid reputation and I'm positive that they can make money while continuing to produce new mods. People had an issue with the internal design of the Therion and it sold like maple syrup on a cold Canadian morning.

If you make what people want there's always a demand. Does it cost Lost Vape more to develop new products compared to Smok? Absolutely, but that's why they have the reputation for quality that they do and why people will continue to buy their products. As for scrapping the Drone all together, won't happen. They're already taking a bath by having this delay, think of how many they had already produced. Selling batch 1 may not get them out of the red, but makes it less painful.

I am not saying people do not want them – myself owning a Lost Vape product is proof there is a want. The question is how much of a want is there. You can’t go on just what a few enthusiasts say on a vaping forum. If the demand for the product is high, then why is LV not meeting demand? Why concentrate on the Orion if demand for their other products are high?

You posted a letter that is suppose to be a response from Lost Vape in regards to their delay…why only 1 batch run of the new Drone? I am just responding to this comment in a logical way for there is no explanation as to why only 1 production run for a product that is suppose to be in high demand. The single batch run is not something I made up. If pre-sales do not meet expectations, why continue production? That’s just economic suicide!

As for cost of development… what costs more - refreshing a previous product and relying on the development of another company for the electronics (Evolv). Or developing a product from the ground up? Don’t make the assumption that because LV is of better quality than Smok that they incur a higher cost of development. Doesn’t work like that.

I am not discrediting Lost Vape, I thoroughly enjoy their products I wish for them to continue. But viewing their business model it is clear to see they take a much less risky approach to development and manufacturing than a company such as Smok - who has the capital, demand and market share to take such risks. If Smok has a product that does not sell well, profit from their many other products will mitigate that loss. Lost Vape does not enjoy such luxuries! That does not mean they are a bad company or a failure – just they have to be more selective with their budgets.

A well established practice for smallish Chinese companies is to fund development and manufacturing through pre-sales. Banks and investors are extremely expensive (to the point of usury really), so pre-sales are used to generate funds needed to make new products. This is like a 0% interest loan. This also explains why some pre-sales take so long to deliver the product, sometimes they run into problems that need to be fixed or their material suppliers run behind on delivery.

Limited runs and subsequent new pre-sales offerings generally means the company just does not have the capital to continue without the pre-sales "loan" again.

Smart business really when the result of using banks or investors significantly raises the product price and subsequently puts the price of the final product outside of a reasonable price to be competitive in the market.

This is why I don't do pre-orders. It is frustrating and a bit of a gamble. It can force a company to put out a product to quickly, many times with known issues, to satisfy the clamoring of pre-order customers.

why only 1 batch run of the new Drone?
Ah... they make one batch of everything it seems like. When the Paranormal 250C came out early this year, they only made one batch of a thousand. And they went really quickly. Luckily after 4 months of the big demand, they made another batch. I never heard of there was only two batches of them ever made or not. But at least you still can get one now. But probably not too long in the future.

Lost Vape always operated this way. So many of their models I would have loved to own and they were only out briefly and that is it. Like the Drone 166, for example. They came out and if you waited, they were gone. The Therion BF 75C was another one like that. Except it was far easier to find a Therion BF rather than a Drone.

But the good news about all of this. Think of it this way. Many of the Lost Vape products, especially the ones originally in short supply, hold their value so well. Sure is a lot different than other many vape products out there. As some of them lose half of their value just by opening the package. :(

A SIDE NOTE: I ordered (you can only preorder these things) a XvoStick DNA60. They only make like a 100 per year and you have no idea if this will be the last time they produce one or not. The window for preordering is only like 2 weeks per year. Last month the 2 week window opened up again and I ordered one. And they don't expect any to be ready until the end of January. But it could take much longer too. And you think Lost Vape is bad. Hell Lost Vape is a saint compared to some highly sought after mods. ;)

If they are still available, then the demand is not that great. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the inventory of a few local shops holding out for a holiday sale on both the Paranormal and the Triade – their inventory has not changed over the past month or so.

Regardless, this is Lost Vape playing safe with their production runs and does not mean the new Drone will enjoy a second or third batch. Nor does it mean pre-sales for the new Drone went through the roof and they can afford the loss in development and manufacturing toward the “plastic” design. And no doubt LV products hold’s their value more so than other products out of China. But that has no correlation on how they approach manufacturing by just refreshing previous models. That could be based on the fact they revolve around a DNA chipset. The letter from Vapetime clearly stated that the company is going to concentrate on the demand of the Orion. This tells me they are willing to meet demands should there be a demand.

They are a small company and operate as such. They do not have the capital to refresh their tooling or invest in development every year therefore rely on previous designs to alleviate cost. This is not a bad business model but one that needs to be acknowledged.

Hey, they just discovered the joy of high margin sales on pods. But they also found you needed to make lots and lots of them, and there's only so much capital to go around.

I think this whole Ultem kick with them started with their less expensive Modefined line when they did the Lyra. They may well have found working in plastic was easier and more cost efficient so decided to spread the wealth into the upper tier. Unfortunately they didn't use Ultem ( and I have no idea if its properties are really better than the plastic they chose) and found they would have headaches diwn the road. So time for a redo, but with a production line expecting some sorta plastic, realigning to a metal frane/door/cover/faceplate whatever wouldn't have been so easy or quick to implement. So a scramble for another plastic compatible with the injected molds they already paid for.

If you watch Jaybo's video of his visit to LV and look at how their "assembly line" runs it's real piece work, and it looked like everyone was making Orion pods. There's only do much floor space and employees available. You go where the money is.

As for the Therion, I'm sorry it died out, but remember the community was screaming how they hated the door and the battery wrap tears from the sled, so out came the Paranormal with a bottom battery door to make that crowd happy. The Triade has now gone through 3 generations of a 200, 250, and now a 250c. They may not be getting as high a sales volume, even with the new c board as folks still have perfectly working original 200's still in use (and it looks like new other than the original leather door darkening up, but I bought some to swap around a while back). And a 21700 version of a Therion isn't easy. It's not just a new battery sled but a whole new C frame and are you going to dump money in without knowing if people recovered from the battery wrap :censored: fest?

I'd be doing pretty much the same as they are if I didn't have an unlimited capital budget and half a factory unused. They're working with what they've got and right now those Orions and their pods are making them money. I can't fault them for that, and am happy they didn't just throw in the towel and decide the Drone was on indefinite hold (I might have).

Well said. Funny though, my issue with the Therion, was less with the battery wraps (got that figured out after tearing a wrap on my first try, haven't torn one since) and more with having to remove the squonk bottle and that divider everytime you want to change a battery.

Yeah I figured out how to get the battery in and out of the Therion too. Keep the top in place and get the bottom loose first to get them out. I also got good at not disconnecting the bottle , but just tossing it over that little wall. It got easy, but still had taken like 90 seconds to swap a battery. Something faster to swap batteries would have been nice. ;)

Don't think you need to worry about Evolv dropping a new chip and board anytime soon. They got all they could under the wire for the FDA deeming cutoffs, and unlike the Chinese manufacturers, as an American company that can get seriously nailed if they're noncompliant releasing anything else new without an approved PMTA. They couldn't even bring the Replay software upgrade to the 75C under a US firmware upgrade because the code was past that 2016 cutoff so had to release it only through the international version of the eScribe software package, not the US one.
