Every single year, the populace is urged to get a Flu Shot .. "CDC Outlook :: Possible Really Bad Flu Season This Year .."

My DR says, "Well, yeah, it's maybe 10% effective, but hey, it's better than nothing .. "

I guess I'll drag myself out and get one tomorrow ..

Hubs has no reaction to his flu shot…lucky him.

Our story with the shingles vaccine. I got mine…I think 2-3 years ago now - no reaction. Hubs had to wait till the next day for some reason and that night he developed shingles on his face. Poor guy they were on his scalp and his forehead and temples. Luckily not his eyes. He was miserable.

The pharmacist who administered my vaccine said the same thing your and my docs said but of course it doesn't include every single flu virus, only the most likely for us to contract. My doc also said if we were to get the flu it would probably not be as serious if we are vaccinated.

I also asked him how is the vaccine formulated and he said the powers to be base it on past years' viruses as well as any mutations coming out of other countries.

I never believed in flu shots and never got the flu until about 3 years ago. Good grief. Couldn't even get off the couch for 3 days! Now I get the shot each year during my annual check up. I did get the flu last year from Beckett, but it only lasted 2 days really and didn't slow me down much so now I'm on board with them. They say the shot may not be the strain going around, but if you do get it it won't be as bad. Seems to be true. Looks like the same for the pneumonia shot. Turns out I did have the flu this year, but it didn't slow me down at all. Mike was worse and him going to Urgent Care is when I found out I had it too. So now I believe in those shots as well.

Geez. What timing! Then what happens with the shot? Were they able to give him some anti-viral meds to take care of it? Gotta do that asap. Hope they got him quick enough. I hear shingles is terribly painful.

Got mine today. It sort of burned when I got it, and is somewhat sore two hours later, but only at the injection.

I've got my check-up soon so guess it's gonna be my turn. Strange that it can't be predicted how a person will respond to it any given year. I wish everybody luck with theirs!

You're right. Shingles doesn't itch; it hurts like heck, especially if hot water hits it in the shower. My doctor gave me an office sample when I had it years ago. He said it sometimes it worked if you started it early enough. Didn't work for me. Oddly, the area affected has continued to be somewhat itchy ever since.

Doc put hubby on steroids to help with the swelling but that's it. Nermal is right. It doesn't itch. It hurts terribly. And it has to run its course. Hubs still had to get the shingles vaccine because doc said having had shingles doesn't give one enough immunity from getting it again.

Uh, not live virus, hasn't been for many years.

Get the shot :)

Key Facts About Seasonal Flu Vaccine

from way down the article:

Can the flu vaccine give me the flu?
No, a flu vaccine cannot cause flu illness. Flu vaccines that are administered with a needle are currently made in two ways: the vaccine is made either with a) flu vaccine viruses that have been killed (inactivated) and are therefore not infectious, or b) with proteins from a flu vaccine virus instead of flu vaccine viruses (which is the case for recombinant influenza vaccine). However, the viruses are attenuated (weakened), and therefore cannot cause flu illness. The weakened viruses are cold-adapted, which means they are designed to only cause infection at the cooler temperatures found within the nose. The viruses cannot infect the lungs or other areas where warmer temperatures exist.

Hola .. :)

I've gotten a flu shot I believe, for at least the last 15 years .. and, I suppose the testimony for it is the fact that I have not had the flu .. however, I don't think I had the flu more than twice in the years leading up to the first flu shot .. pneumonia shot, check that box as well ..

I did have Chickenpox as a child and have a few pock mark scars to prove it .. so, I approached my DR some years ago for the shingles shot .. although he is not an anti-vaxer, he did somewhat poo-poo the idea but did get the shot administered .. his initial thoughts were "Well, Willie, your immune system is good, you're physically in pretty good shape all things considered and about 1/4-1/3rd of people actually get shingles that are in the risk group .." If memory serves, it was a fairly expensive shot at the time and did have a finite effectiveness ..

On a side note, I know a couple Oldsters that have gone to work for the 2020 Census .. it seems like a pretty good side gig and in my area, they seem to be having a tough time hiring people .. worth considering if you want to pick up some extra shekels ..
