Meet Me in St Louie Louie
Hola .. :)

I never had had coffee until I enlisted .. (beer either, for that matter .. although I was no stranger to weed ..) .. during Basic Training, I started drinking coffee as we were rousted out of the sack at 4:30 - 5:00 AM, I saw others drinking it in the Mess Hall .. back in those days, before you could even get breakfast, we had to go through a fairly long set of Monkey Bars, one time the first week or two, then twice later on .. then, and only then, were we allowed to eat .. after breakfast, which the Army certainly did believe was the "Most Important Meal of the Day" as they served up a hearty meal, we began calisthenics .. whether it was the coffee or the exercise, my body was definitely jump started ..

"Smoke 'em if you got 'em .."

When I was deployed, coffee was always on when we were in Camp .. and, most of us drank plenty of it .. your canteen came with a form fitting large drinking vessel, and that was the preferred "mug" of choice .. it was somewhat of an ingenious, space saving design ..

On a side note, the metal outer shell of your helmet served a multitude of purposes besides attempting to protect your head .. impromptu field 'warshing' up and use as a shaving water receptacle was common .. in addition, all C-Rations back then came with coffee / sugar / and a creamer packet ..

Many, if not all C-Rations we had were dated from WWII .. (the smokes were dry, and burned fast) .. we ate them mostly cold in the field .. the canned spaghetti I hated, but, you'd trade with other guys, some liked it .. the Pound Cake was the Gold Standard, IMO .. each of us had what was called a P-51 can opener, worn generally around your neck with your dog-tags ..

My Grandfather, Hardy, drank a lot of coffee .. he and Ruby had an old beat up percolator that always seemed to be on the stove .. Hardy would drip the coffee from the cup into the saucer, and then slurp the coffee out of the saucer .. I never knew why that was .. cooling it, maybe .. as he enjoyed a King Edward cigar .. I used to collect those cigar boxes when I was a kid ..

I have a personal, long History with coffee .. I used to drink it black, but in the last several years, I started using milk or half and half, never sugar, though .. I'll drink it hot, I'll drink it luke warm, I'll drink it cold .. Maybe it's a bad habit, I don't care .. "You'll stop my Coffee when you pry it from my cold, dead hands .."

There are only a few things in life that give true Pleasure and Satisfaction .. a nice, large mug of Maxwell House regular coffee is on that list .. use your imagination on what the others are .. ;)

Prezacally what I do. Janet would like me to quit caffeine totally. I just can't get there.
When I had my stent installed the doctor wanted me to give up caffeine. Yea, that didn't happen. However, I have drastically cut down on my coffee. I used to go through at least 1 pot of coffee every day and sometimes a second pot if I had the day off. Nowadays I limit myself to 2 cups. I really like my Keurig and the single-serve reusable K-Cup filter pods.

I just don't believe that you can tell the difference between a freshly brewed cup of live vs decaf coffee.
I have to respectfully disagree. I am one of those folks that can tell the difference and can't stand the taste of decaf, half-caff, and don't even get me started on instant coffee.

Let's be honest . . . Taste wise - not really that much, but IMHO - there is a difference in taste
Totally agree!

As an Addendum to my "Ode to Coffee" .. those that consume de-calf are not drinking coffee .. it's flavored water that pretends to be coffee .. you half-calfers get a pass, since I'll assume it's half real coffee .. :p .. so, you just have to drink twice as much ..

Lastly, if full blown coffee is bad for you, I'll accept any life-time length penalty .. certainly, I've consumed much worse in my time ..

Hmm, The surprising health benefits of coffee

"Studies have shown that coffee may have health benefits, including protecting against Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes and liver disease, including liver cancer. Coffee also appears to improve cognitive function and decrease the risk of depression.

However, the research appears to bear out some risks. High consumption of unfiltered coffee (boiled or espresso) has been associated with mild elevations in cholesterol levels."

Some years back, after some idle research, we switched from stainless mesh filters back to paper. My cholesterol levels took a nice nose dive. :)

Good afternoon everyone!

Seems I still have a job but I'm not sure I want it anymore. I'll be going in 2 hours earlier than I did before and I'll be in charge of making sure the dogs all go out to go potty, everything is clean and the dogs put up by 9 and the gates open. In other words all the stuff she doesn't want to get up to do. Oh I work for a dog groomer/boarder in case anyone wondered. Whatever. I need the money so I'll do the job. Thank you all for being so supportive this last week. It helped a lot.

Hardy would drip the coffee from the cup into the saucer, and then slurp the coffee out of the saucer

My Grandmother did that ... drove my Mom nuts. I'd give it a try, but I use a coffee mug, might be a bit tricky licking the coffee off the table top if I tried pour a bit out of the mug.

don't even get me started on instant coffee

My Dad rarely drank coffee, but when he did it a Nescafe instant. Ugh!!!

My Cardiac Surgeon's assistant and the hospital insisted I stop drinking anything caffeinated after "My" Quintuple Bypass. However, that didn't even happen in the hospital - Not when there is a "McD" in the lobby (just had to find the right person to go down and get "Me" a cup or 2) . . .

Especially given I use to drink anywhere from 3-4 if not more pots of brewed coffee a day when I was working . . . Then there was the few "cups" socializing with friends particularity after sharing a Great meal dining . . . ;)

type 2 diabetes and liver disease, including liver cancer. Coffee also appears to improve cognitive function and decrease the risk of depression.

YEP - And that's what I've said to all "My" doctors when those report came out. Matter of fact, given that I am only drinking 3 mugs of coffee in the morning, they have given up trying to get "Me" to drink only decaffeinated coffee and are happy that at least it's only half/half . Also I do not drink any other caffeinated drinks (Tea/Soda/etc. - except for a small Expresso every now & then  ) . . .

AND - On that note, for those who might still be interested - FYI:

"My" BAD . . . When I went to return all the coffee I had today, I found out from the manager that Walgreens does not sell Maxwell House Decafe, nor "Half Caff" . . . :glare: The "Light" version they had and I purchase/returned was the type of roasted coffee . . . :-x

So Long Story Short, Thankfully - Winn Dixie (a local market) had both Maxwell House Decafe and the elusive "Half Caff" on sale for $4.99 too . . . :headbang:  Pantry now has 6 - "Half Caff" . . . And - 2 "Light" & 2 "Decafe" that will be DIY Half/Half . . . Oh Yea - Got a Rain check for 6 more "Half Caff", since I purchased all they had . . . So I guess I'm covered, especially for an emergency . . .

Well until the next sale . . . ;)

BTW: @Uncle Willie - Again, Thanks ! ! !

I like my morning coffee - black and full strength. Only 2 cups, but a large mug. After that, I am done. I can't even drink tea (iced or otherwise) after about 3 pm or I won't sleep. I do go a day without coffee now and then with no ill effects (if I have to get up and go for some event), but I prefer my morning coffee.

Just as an FYI ..

I drink no sodas .. no tea .. no energy drinks .. etc ..

Pretty much the only things than pour down my gullet are Coffee, Water and Booze .. on rare occasions I'll have a lemonade ..

I was a heavy Mountain Dew drinker for a long time, until my kidneys started hurting and my DR advised me to quit, the pain went away .. I used to down 3-5 cans or 16 OZ bottles a day .. now, that was some withdrawal ..

My hubby respectfully agrees and disagrees. He agrees that store-bought, run of the mill decaf tastes awful. He also disagrees because good quality (see not cheap) decaf tastes just like the real thing and that's all he drinks because of his prostate.

Good rainy morning to whoever is up. Rain, rain, and more rain.

Well - Let's be honest . . . Taste wise - not really that much, but IMHO - there is a difference in taste . . . AND - YEP, there is a big difference between Caff & Decaf for many people - both physically & emotionally - since Ya' usually go through "withdrawal" symptoms:

.

Yes, some people do get withdrawal headaches when they cut out caffeine. Some people can drink coffee and then go to bed. Some people get anxious and jittery when they drink coffee. Everyone is different physically and emotionally. If you're already anxious why would you want to risk feeding that? If you believe it'll give you a big boost of energy it probably will. I love my morning and afternoon coffee, but discovered when I had to go decaf for medical reasons there really wasn't that big a difference except maybe for being calmer.
