Speaking of books, I'm at the tail end of the 'Clifton Chronicles' .. Jeffrey Archer .. nothing more than the fictional story of a man, his Friend and their families over a period of many years ..

Just an incredibly satisfying read, quite uplifting, in fact ..

Have any of you read Lee Child's books with his protagonist Jack Reaper? If yes what do you think? My three favorite fiction writers are John Grisham, Michael Connely and Greg Iles. Given that should I give Lee Child a try?
Definitely. And even if you don't like his books, it will only take a few hours to read one. An insignificant expenditure of time. You are only afraid that once you start reading his books, you will binge through them. Two weeks will do it for you.

Thank you for the unintentional suggestion of Greg Iles.

If you like Michael Connely you’ll like Greg Iles. His trilogy is exceptional. But be prepared to spend a lot of time reading it. All three books are extra long but the story justifies it. BTW if your public library subscribes to the Overdrive (ebooks) they should have the trilogy.
If you don’t have a card but you have Kindle PM me.

Good afternoon everyone! I hope everyone has a good day today!

I'm on the way to have a mammogram. I'd rather deal with a hurricane. What man invented this test? Its torture. Wonder what the men would say if we told them to lay their pe*** on a shelf and let us squish it? Oh well. THAT'S not ever going to happen. Might as well get this over with. Hope y'all are having a better day than I'm having.

I read his stuff. After a few titles, it gets kind of predictable, but what the heck.

Okay, I made a note of Greg Iles, because I do like Connely.

I gave a copy of this to the tech that did mine once. She loved it and taped on the machine where the patients could see it.

If memory serves, Cathy (clnire) is a big fan .. I did get on a jag of Jack Reacher for a time, but like Nermal said, it gets fairly predictable ..

There is a whole sub-culture designed to slam Tom Cruise for playing Reacher in the films .. Cruise was not very well cast based on the Reacher in the books ..

I'll check into the availability. We have to research the online catalog, she checks it out, then we pick it up at the door. I guess I can give Overdrive another try.

@3mg Meniere most large county libraries are on Overdrive but if they don’t have it often the county next door will let you on theirs with a valid library card from your county. My county subscribes to DBDigital which IMO is almost useless. I ended up paying $50
/yr to subscribe to the Queens, NY overdrive (many libraries allow non-residents to do that for a fee). I could have subscribed to the Jacksonville Overdrive but for $100/yr.

If your county does have the Overdrive and you don’t have their library card, because of Covid ask if you can apply on line for it. Most county libraries are doing it.

I hope I don’t offend with this comment but I think Tom Cruise is miscast in any movie he was ever in. I think he’s a terrible actor.

YES and YES!!! I happen to love Lee Child and Jack Reacher. Yes, the books do get kind of predictable, but the twists and turns keep me turning the pages and eager for the next one.

I agree with Bea, Cruise is not what I consider a "good actor", shall we say? Unfortunately, he bought the rights to the Reacher novels, a move I understand Lee Child later regretted with the lash-back he received from Reacher fans. Cruise in no way reflects what we fans picture Reacher as. 6' 5", 230-250 lbs, decent looking but not pretty or handsome, rugged, a fighter. Cruise is a whimp.

Greg Iles - YES!! My mother-in-law introduced me to him many years ago. His books are long, but always suck you into the story. A trilogy? @Bea-FL What are the books? I must check it out...

I also happen to be a James Patterson fan.... And John Sanford. Of course Michael Connely. A big Harry Bosch fan too.... Now, I think Titus Welliver was cast well on the TV series Bosch...

Fast as he can write !

And I'm one of them. When I heard it was being made into a movie, I went YEAH .. then I heard Tom was playing Reacher, and I cussed through a sneer ..YUCK, are you kidding me !!, ...and lost interest.

Yes to all three, and throw in Preston & Child, Jeffery Deaver (The Bone Collector movie was as good as the book), James Rollins, Dean Koontz, for a few more.
Who can leave out Michael Crichton (Jurassic Park, Rising Sun, Sphere, The Great Train Robbery, The Andromeda Strain)

Kinda sad right now. The used book store I loved, is gone, thanks to C19.
It was 45 minutes from home, so I only went a couple times a year. I'd take in about 40 books, and spend a long time checking for books I hadn't read, by all my favorite authors, and I'd leave with about another 30-40 books.
Now we're left with nothing.
I took 2 big bags of books into the hospital the other day. They have a gift shop, that has a huge book rack in front.
Take one, Leave one ... so I loaded them up.

I watched the movie Jack Reacher, but never read the Lee Child books. Doesn't surprise me the books were better than the movie. The Odd Thomas Series is a favorite of mine, the movie was not how I pictured Odd or Stormy really. Not a bad movie if you haven't read the books.

I waited with baited breath for a Dark Tower movie to come out for many years, somewhat glad it never happened. I think Clint Eastwood would have made a decent Roland of Gilead, but there is always something lacking when trying to portray an idea in film, originally expressed in print. The focus necessary to lose oneself in an epic story, seems to be lacking in a 1-1/2 hour movie. Maybe it's a question of investment, maybe its distractions, in my case, it's providing details that my imagination does a superb job of fabricating.

Then again, maybe I'm just stuck in my ways. I grew up loving books, and still do. Books helped me escape so many things, I guess I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the written word, especially fiction. The eye may be the portal to the soul, but a book is the portal to the mind of it's creator. Powerful stuff.

I think that's the secret...reading requires one to use their imagination, and everyone reading the description of what's happening in the book will picture it their own way.
Everyone's imagination see's a different picture play out.
How can a movie match all the different mental pictures ... they can't. So to some it's a good movie according to how they projected it in their mind, and to others it's a disappointment.
Makes me think of .."is that juice any good" ... all taste buds are different too :p

Good morning Cathy and Slots. Gonna be a scorcher here today with the temp and humidity climbing. It's a good day to work inside.

Thanks for the book ideas everybody. I recently gave a very positive review to an appliance store for the excellent job they did on our fridge repair and they sent me an Amazon $25 gift cert. That was a nice surprise! So, I went book shopping!
