So, if off the shelf Baby Formula is a relatively Modern invention .. during all of History, prior to the invention, Women all breast fed the babies .. ?? There had to be alternatives over the millennia ..
Some babies had a "wet nurse" to feed them if their mother wasn't available to them. There were a lot of infant and maternal deaths in the past. Having the instant formula available has saved some babies lives when they weren't able to nurse with their mothers. It also gave the mothers a way to go back to work for money back when there was a lot more discrimination against women with children. I think nursing moms still run into barriers at work or in public places.

So, really, the hyperbole on the News about 'Don't make your own formula' is just another Modern paranoia bit .. if babies did OK in times gone by with raw cow milk, why is that not an alternative now .. ?? .. or the Karo syrup and evaporated milk formula .. ??

I never thought to ask my Mother when she was living what I had back in the '40's ..

And, I would venture to guess, the Wet Nurse may come back into fashion ..

It was not "fashionable" to nurse when I was born so mom never did it. I remember she told me my sister for some reason drank goat's milk. To this day, I have never bottle-fed a baby but at one time long ago, I had enough frozen milk in the freezer to feed a small country. Elsie had nothing on me.

I never really understood the toilet paper shortage so I am not sure why there is a formula shortage or why we get so much from other countries. The way people are allowing shoplifting, those women need to make a run for the border. I see the government has made sure taxpayers have bought plenty for the immigrants.

I also imagine a lot of formula could have been bought with the amount of money the taxpayers have had to pay for all the unnecessary trips to Ukraine. Haven't Nancy Pelosi, Dr. Jill, Mitch McConnell and other senators ever heard of ZOOM? Sheesh!

(as if Zelenskyy doesn't have enough of his plate)

Maybe it is just me but most of the problems I see with our country could be resolved if we were self-reliant and took care of our family first and then help all the people we can everywhere.

I am not just talking about oil. Now I read that there is a shortage of contrast for c-scans and MRI's. Why do we get that from China? Why is China the top source of pharmaceutical imports? Why does China own so much of the US farmland? I have so many unanswered questions.

I have a better question though. . . Why is it Saturday night and I am at home doing laundry?

Oh, I have some more wonderful news. My cousin went to the shelter and came home with a beautiful (and lucky) 12 year old cat that had to have his leg amputated for some reason. The cats name was Willow (which I think is a great name) but she is going to call her Maggie. That sounds more like a canine to me but hey, I'd probably have gone with something like Tripod.

She said the cat got out of the crate and went to the closet. My cousin said after about 30 minutes she got her out and put her on the couch. That's when she took a pic and sent it to me. She said there was hair all over the place which will calm down some when the cat is not so nervous. Her hair has not yet all grown back from her operation as you can tell in the pic but I think she is beautiful.

The last time I got a text from my cousin, Maggie was enjoying the couch and her new home. Don't you just love happy endings?

Good morning. Wow, it's 66 outside this morning, going up to 81. At least we're not as hot as it is at Willie's house! Next Saturday we should hit 88 so I'm sure the AC will have to come on for the first time this year. A month ago I was complaining about the cold...

I don't want to sound crass, but that's never stopped me in the past .. o_O

This whole Baby Formula shortage that's making the rounds on the News :: Logic tells me Baby Formula can't be that old of an invention .. I mean, Women had Babies since the dawn of Humanity, they had to have been feeding them something and it did not come in a container ..

So, what's the big deal .. ??

Apparently, it can be done even if the person hasn't been breastfeeding. Grandmothers are doing it and some folks are using the old Karo recipe that used to be a regular thing.

So, if off the shelf Baby Formula is a relatively Modern invention .. during all of History, prior to the invention, Women all breast fed the babies .. ?? There had to be alternatives over the millennia ..

When it became routine for mother's to deliver in hospitals it became acceptable to bottle feed on a schedule for efficiency so bottle feeding became the norm. Also there were misconceptions, like my MIL telling me she couldn't nurse because her milk was "too rich". Of course her mother kept telling her she had to nurse every time the baby squeeked and then didn't understand why the kid would puke when she picked him up to burp him. Well, the more you nurse the more milk you make, hence, her milk was too rich. So, out came the bottles. At first, nursing can be pretty painful so, bring out the bottles. Then you have women who'd like to nurse, but had to work and didn't have time to pump or couldn't pump enough. Women with mastectomies, who are sick or have adopted newborns need formula and then there are the babies born who have to stay in the hospital after birth who need to supplement with formula.
My DIL had to get frozen breastmilk from a friend because she couldn't seem to produce enough. Our daughter produced enough to supply several other women and I think a lot more of that is happening now given the shortage.
Cows milk is meant for cows, not human babies. Some babies would get quite sick by drinking it. Infant mortality was quite high years ago so we didn't all make out just fine. Look up "Why not DIY baby formula".
Personally, I'm all in favor of breastfeeding, but for many it's not an option. Due to convenience many have been using formula and you can't just turn on the faucet once you've dried up the supply. Some women are on medications that precludes them from nursing.
It's complicated and is one more example of relying on too few sources of the things we need in life.

She's beautiful! My sister adopted a 3 legged cat that she named Lily. She doesn't know she only has 3 legs! It's amazing how she gets around. How wonderful that your cousin has decided to give her a new home. Many people would have passed up a "disabled" cat, especially an older one.

We have 2 kitties, sisters, that we rescued and one is named Maggie Mae. Her sister was named Fanny Mae, but we changed that to Phoebe. They're good company for each other, especially if we go away for a few days. Just did the math, they'll be 16 years old this Fall.

There's a super moon tonight with a total lunar eclipse. Of course we're going to have T-showers so the clouds are going to ruin it - no surprise there. It's rare for us to see cool sky happenings. I can predict overcast skies for any future happenings. I'm gonna look anyway, just in case there's a break in the clouds.

See what happens when I go away for a few days. I come back and you can't shut me up.

Mike just got home from his fishing trip. Nobody was catching any fish. Guess that means he's gonna have to schedule another trip to make up for it. Might be a good time to schedule a ladies weekend away.

She is beautiful. Personally, I would name her Ileene, a Greek name meaning "Light, Shining, and Brilliant". It is terrific that your cousin adopted her.

Or, I Lean. :)
Yep, the very same, I was just being 'creative'.
Ok computer gurus, my desktop is identifying my wireless keyboard. The mouse works well. If I select any keys on the keyboard, I hear a click but that is all. I can use the on-screen keyboard, but that is slow and laborious. Any help is appreciated.

Did you try putting a fresh battery in the keyboard? Sometimes I've had to turn my keyboard on/off a couple of time to get it to connect.

It sounds like your sticky key function is turned on. Check the settings.

  • Press the Windows key + I to open Settings.
  • Tap or click Ease of Access.
  • On the left pane, scroll down and click Keyboard.
  • On the right pane, toggle the button to Off for Filter Keys, Sticky Keys and Toggle Keys.
  • When done, exit Settings app.
I hope this helps. Worth a try. :)

I'm not sure what it was but I went in and turned off the filter key option, I don't even know what that is, and now the keyboard is working as it should. Thank you both very much.

My nice relaxing day has been postponed until tomorrow and maybe extended until Tuesday. Someone needs to tell my dad you shouldn't work on Sundays. Someone also needs to tell him that I should not hoist a pushmower up on top of a picnic table so he can sit down to work on it. He seems to think I can do anything and evidently, I do too at times.

Now I am not saying I am some kind of WonderWoman or anything, but I have noticed the more agitated I get, the stronger I am. I guess that sounds more like The Hulk.

I never did figure out how he could get so big and his britches only got shorter. Now that's the kind of Thanksgiving stretchy pants I need. heehee

Oh well, I hope everyone has a wonderful Monday.

Hola .. :)

Some weeks back, I tilled up some areas on the yard, added peat moss and a liberal amount of grass seed in an attempt to fill in some bare spots .. the rain came and all was well ..

Then, the rain tap suddenly turned off and the heat wave hit .. quickly sucking the moisture out of the soil and requiring me to {{{shudder}}}, actually water those areas .. now, I don't know what water costs where you live, but, around these parts, it's pretty durn expensive .. not to mention shlepping the sprinkler from place to place and remembering to turn it off and move it ..

So, yesterday, the Weather Prognosticators predicted an afternoon shower and I thought 'Yes, I'll get a free yard watering ..' .. so, I'm puttering around outside and the clouds begin to build, it's getting darker off to the West and I'm thinking, 'Looks good ..' ..

The rain came and lasted maybe 10 minutes .. why, oh, why I just happened to be located in what was probably the thinnest band of rain within the whole storm beats the Hell out of me ..

I suppose I should be happy and take what I can get .. however, it was not enough to prevent an inevitable Home Improvement Loan with which to pay my next water bill ..

Dissapointed ..
