Has the house gotten too big for you or do you just want to move.

Hola .. :)

Did I read that correctly .. ??

Yep, you read that right. We've been talking about downsizing since before we retired. Right now we're almost an hour away from both of our kids. That can be a problem when they need us quickly which has happened a few times already. Plus, this house is a 4 bedroom colonial with 3 acres to take care of. We'll miss our "park" most of all, but the property is getting to be too much to take care of. I'd rather not spend my time watering, weeding and maintaining. Plus, we really don't need 3 toilets to clean!

Gonna be another scorcher today, but will only get worse by Sunday when it'll go to 98. I'd better get moving and finish getting the deck painted. At least the part left to do is in the shade.

Moring all ... yep I'm still around just not on ECF. Seem's I've only been doing 1 of 3 things this week ... my own to-do list getting the house ready, helping the contractor that is also working around the house or going to doctor's appointments. Seems the older I get the more time I'm spending with a slew of different doctors getting regular checkups for this and that or going for lap work, x-rays, or CT scans.

It's bitter sweet. We've put in 40 years of sweat and toil turning the property into our own private parks and it's hard to give that up. Yet alone all the renovations we've done to the house. Although it's easier to think about saying good-bye to the house ... giving up the backyard is heart breaking. It's so peaceful sitting on the back deck looking out over it and the grandkids love coming here and exploring and playing among the trees. Neither of our kid's homes have large yards, so the grandkids really like of the space they have when they visit here (not even mentioning the pool which surely is an attraction for them).

Morning, all.

Summer continues, but still not as bad as most of the rest of you.

Although next week the guess is hotter, so maybe we'll catch up.

Hola .. :)

It's the end of an era .. I suppose I should feel happy for you since that's apparently what you want .. still, over the years, you sharing part of your journey, a lot of which took place at the home, had kind of become a warm and soft memory for me .. that home was and is a part of who you are .. for me, it would be like losing a family member or an old friend ..

Still, sometimes we have to move on ..

If I'm not being too nosey, are you already looking for a new place .. ?? I'd guess your place would sell super fast once listed .. I mean, it's pretty much got it all ..

I believe over time, we impart some spirit of ourselves in our dwelling that stays there .. the walls absorb a piece of the memories ..

Allow me to wish both of you to have a new and exciting journey as your path changes ..

No good badonkadonk's fun in this family.

And lots of virtual hugs if you want ‘em.
Send all you can spare. I appreciate the good thoughts too because I know they help more than you will ever know.

All the good times and memories go with you so I think it is wonderful. Now y'all will be able to enjoy doing what you want to do and not what you have to do. Big difference.

There is no way I am going to keep maintaining this place. I don't want a house this big or 2 1/2 acres to mow. Besides, I have places to go and people to annoy!

We’ve been friends a very long time here on ECF. I wish you two the very best and hope you can find a smaller house and property to love.

Good morning. 94 and 98 today and tomorrow. Neither of us have been in the pool yet due to working on the house. Today I should finish painting the deck and front porch in my bathing suit. I can paint for an hour and then spend 30 minutes in the pool. I'll call it the Work, Dunk, Repeat method of getting anything done around here in this heat.

Thank you Fran, Tory and Willie for your kind comments about our moving. Yep, we're going to be taking our fond memories of life here at the Ebner Park with us. I'll really miss the yard and being able to sit on my couch and watch the wildlife, weather and my plants through the glass doors.

The flip side of that is we'll be making new memories. I grew up without grandparents so it's important to me to be a part of our grandson's lives. When we're gone I want them to have fond memories of Nana and Pop Pop.

Actually, I'd love to live on a "compound" with our 3 families together. It would keep us from melting into a boring, quiet existence with mostly text messages of the kids milestones. Also, living closer will make it easier for us to help each other out when the need arises. I've so often bypassed wonderful recipes for dishes that are just too much for Mike and I. It would be great and helpful to share with the family especially with the kids work schedules.

Now we just have to find a nice place to settle in and start making those new memories!

Good luck on the transition and happy house hunting. What is the plan? Sell house first, then look for another, rent for awhile or?

I wish I could type a bit better. My health has not been the best this last week. Let me try to get this right. I got up Sunday morning and I had no use of my right hand. First It wasn't a stroke. The doctor said it is Ulnar Nerve Palsy. During this I also broke my glasses. I made an appt. for 11:30 yesterday. My friend was supposed to be here at 11:00 to pick me up. I had the alarm so I would be awake. Well, that didn't go as planned. I woke up and there was an OCDP standing next to me calling my name. My friends had been trying to wake me for the past 45 minutes. I was able to reschedule my appt. and now I have new glasses. My right hand still looks like a claw. I'll see about that next week.
It now looks like I'll be selling out here in Oklahoma City and moving closer to family. I have a daughter in NE Oklahoma and sisters in Oregon. Now I need to decide which it will be.

You keep writing thinks like that and Janet will be moving without me ... it's tough leaving go here ... just something that needs to be done.

We've only been window shopping 'on-line'. Haven't begun the real chore of getting out there and visiting potential new properties.

Good luck on the transition and happy house hunting. What is the plan? Sell house first, then look for another, rent for awhile or?

All of the above ... at this point we're exploring all options. Ideally we'd like to buy first, then immediately put ours up for sale. We're looking into our finances and potential for a swing loan in order to do that. We're pretty particular about choosing our next home. If we sell first, then we're in a rat race to find the next one. If at all possible we'd like to avoid that. We'd also like to avoid moving hassle and associated expenses twice by moving into an apartment and taking our time looking for the next home.

Well that sounds scary. First the right hand not working then they couldn't wake you for 45 minutes. Any feedback given to you why it was so difficult to wake you?

This is the part that freaks me out. We need the money from the sale of this house so it would make sense to sell ours first, but we'll be homeless unless we can find something we really like quickly. There's low inventory out there to choose from so it's scary. We're told it won't take long to sell our house given the market. I'd seriously considered renting, but that means moving twice.

Wow, that's scary. Thank goodness your friends were there to pick you up! Yep, sounds like a good plan to move closer to your family. That can be a good thing for you, but also you'd be around to help them out when necessary. Good luck with whatever you decide.

@Janet H @MikeE3 We had the same issue here. It helped that the agent was both buyer and selling agent so he worked it so the buyers of our house were flexible on the closing date. That way, we stayed a couple extra days and got the one we were buying to close immediately after. It was tricky though.

The “work, dunk, repeat” method is brilliant…gotta be careful in heat like that, so safety first, right? :thumb:

New memories sound lovely! I know it will be bittersweet, leaving “home”, but it will be worth it. I hope the transition from house to house will go quickly and smoothly!

Random Rambling on Lifestyle Change ..

As some may remember, last August I spent a goodly amount of time with my newly discovered Family when they converged in Myrtle Beach and I had the opportunity ..

I stayed in a Townhouse / Condo complex a few doors down from my Aunt Anitas place and was, thusly, exposed to life in what would be considered, mostly anyway, a retirement complex with also a number of AIRBNB vacation rentals ..

After settling in and getting the lay of the land, it ended up affording me the opportunity to experience that type of lifestyle .. Of course, I cannot speak for other areas, however, in this case, there were a number of draws :: Exterior maintenance, including roof, yard, outside walls .. clubhouse for common use .. pool .. gated community .. central location within easy walking distance of a number of things .. heavy use of golfcarts by the residents .. generally very quiet .. etc ..

It actually felt like a Community .. water / land line phone / Internet and basic cable was provided to the residents .. the tradeoff to all this being, in my Aunts case anyway, is a $425 a month Association fee .. her Townhouse is about 1500 SQ FT, so I'm sure it's less money for smaller homes ..

I must say that it was not bad .. in fact, as my Aunt began to work on me to move to Myrtle Beach, I had a time of what I would consider serious contemplation .. the logic, though, did not quite work out .. she's 91 now and still doing OK but time is ticking .. and, the rest of my New Clan all live in and around NYC and don't seem to have any inclination to move to Myrtle Beach .. so, I would eventually be left alone, relative wise, assuming I outlive Anita ..

To this day, when a Townhouse becomes available for sale, Anita will call me and work on me again ..

I still maintain my workshop, I still make money, I like my way and I'm just not ready to throw the towel in on that .. yes, it can be hard keeping up with this and that, but everything I have is paid for, I have a routine, I have connections, and, honestly, there is a degree of fear in moving halfway across the country and getting re-established .. I would have to drastically change my current lifestyle ..

On the other hand, I love the ocean and the Carolinas in general offer such a diversity of so many things .. it's a tempting proposition ..

Change is hard .. it may be one of the hardest things, especially after decades of building something .. after being somewhat of a Gypsy for a good portion of my life, there are times I regret leaving Colorado, leaving Texas, leaving Louisiana and leaving Northern California after having lived in each for a time ..

Yet the alure of the new and unknown remains ..

That sounds awfully scary! Glad to hear it wasn’t a stroke, but I’m sure it’s a pain having little to no use of your hand, though. Hopefully the doc can get it back in working order soon!
