do you lot not have a blue bin in america? like one specifically for carboard?
Some states do and others don't. I doubt any in the deep south do it except maybe big cities. Heck, you rarely see a hybrid or electric car and there are no charging stations here. Lots of F-150s though lol.

    Morning, all.

Big bright thing in the sky, wonder what it could be...

And the temp is said to be close to normal, and get to 10 over normal by the weekend. Uh, yeah, and just what is normal these days?

Went to an open house today. Lovely home. I probably wouldn't be friends with the owners. The house so perfect including blades of grass outside. Sheesh! It was so perfect - almost creepy.

    Hola .. :|

I have a neighbor couple, they are in their late 70's .. they have a 3 car garage, and have a car, an SUV and a truck .. when they go somewhere, he pulls out the vehicle they are using from the garage, and then dusts it off with a vehicle dusting wand as is used at dealerships ..

Weather and temperature permitting, she is out in the yard regularly with one of those pincher grabber devices extracting every stick and other debris from the yard ..

The interior of their home is equally babied .. when they first moved in a few years back, after they settled in, I did my obligatory Welcome Wagon visit (I did not bring any basket of goodies, however) .. as I stepped over the threshold, I was asked to please remove my shoes ..

Perhaps they should provide a shoe cover at entrance, with a sign .. ??

At any rate, how do they know my socks are cleaner than my shoes .. ??

To me, it's somewhat maddening, since I live under the idea that my personal housing is, er, made for living in .. I mean, do people like this actually use the bathroom .. ?? Maybe it's these folks the bidet market was designed for ..

'Take him outside and flog him, now .. by God, he farted ..'

Well, yeah. But for us, shoes off does keep a lot of fir needles and other debris out of the carpets, and less time on the vacuum :) Then again, we are "country" folk, and wouldn't be looking at the same issues if urban dwellers.

Part of "living in" is enhanced with less maintenance :)

Then the question would be, if a stranger knocked on your door and clearly gave you a nice 'welcome to the 'hood greeting, would you then require him to do footwear removal prior to entry .. ?? Or perhaps deny him entry if he refused to comply .. ??

Well, OK, on second thought, I take it all back .. I suppose, in the Modern World, knocking on a strangers door and being asked to remove your footwear prior to entrance is a minor inconvenience compared to some alternatives ..

Rumination on 'This is Really Stupid' ..

Have you seen the Charmin Bear commercials .. ?? I generally avoid TV ads, but when I watch the news at 6 and then 'Wheel', I'm subjected to commercials ..

The Bears would have you believe that Charmin, and only Charmin, is an acceptable TP .. no other brand can 'do the job' .. you need to 'Enjoy the Go' .. these bears are unbearable, IMO .. they make me want to throw a shoe at the TV (oh, I forgot, I left them at the neighbors house .. ) ..

The question is, can a regular human rear end really tell the difference between the Dollar General TP and a wad of Charmin .. ?? I'm betting no way, Jose .. and, did they do some sort of focus group to find out .. ??

    Bring back Mr. Whipple ..

It's like a big, juicy cheeseburger flying down on the TV screen in a Hardee's ad and doing a bounce when it hits the table .. I've never had that cheeseburger, but would like to .. in fact, when do you ever get a fast food burger that even remotely looks like what they show you in a commercial ..

Dang, two dry days in a row, what'll they think of next??

Then the question would be, if a stranger knocked on your door and clearly gave you a nice 'welcome to the 'hood greeting, would you then require him to do footwear removal prior to entry .. ?? Or perhaps deny him entry if he refused to comply .. ??

Uh, maybe :) Since they'd also be "country" folk they might already be onthe same page. Then again, if "new" to the area, shoe regs might not be in place yet.

Have you seen the Charmin Bear commercials .. ??

Sadly, yes, and with the same reaction, and thankfully the shoes are over by the door :) Makes me buy any other product.

I did feel the urge to take them out back and see if I could cause a lithium explosion
Yeah, unintended consequences and all that. Last year I was burning some brush when my hearing aids signaled end-of-battery. I carry a card of batteries with me most of the time, so I swapped out the tiny (pencil-eraser-sized) zinc-air batteries. Usually I do this at my desk, where I have a roll of masking tape handy, but today I'm sitting next to a nice big fire. "What can it hurt?" sez I, tossing the Do_Not_Dispose_of_in_Fire batteries into the fire. A minute or so later, there is a loud POP and a THWACK on the garage door behind me. I go look and there is a tiny twisted shard of metal embedded in the garage door. "Lucky me," sez I, and won't be trying that again.

The chances of being hit by a single piece of shrapnel are pretty small. The surface of a sphere with a radius of from-you-to-the-fire is quite large and your face occupies less than a square foot of it. But odds are just that, any of the possible results is possible. Case in point: many years ago in my then-hometown of Ann Arbor, three teenagers decided to make a serious firecracker. They drilled out the valve on a 14 oz propane cylinder and filled it with black powder. Lighting a long fuse, they retreated a long way - maybe 100 yards. It went off and a substantial chunk hit one of the kids in the head and killed him. At 100 yards, the area of a sphere is 282,743+ square feet, and that kid's head occupied less than one of them. Long odds.

Knowing this bit of local history, I should have known better, but I did it anyway.

My daughter lives on the farm left to her by my father. At one point she kept a number of large animals. She and her family got in the habit of removing shoes to avoid tracking manure all over the house (and now do it in any house they visit). I need the support of carefully chosen shoes and insoles to avoid considerable pain and instability. She never required that I remove my shoes in her house, and in return I don't wander around the yard before coming into the house.

If you want to meet up with folks who are real bugs about footgear, try the owners of high-end luxury yachts. Only boat shoes that have NEVER MADE ONE STEP UPON LAND are suitable. Socks are dangerously slippery on fiberglass and varnished wood (and probably unsanitary, to boot).

Just wanted to drop in and say hello. I can't believe I have not been on ECF in so long but have been quite busy.

I had a wonderful weekend but had a real oinkfest. heehee But it was fun. Met a nice 57-year-old man when I went to check out a live band. He ended up feeding me supper and the next day we went to Cracker Barrell and then Rio Grand for Mexican. Then Terry's sister called and I went to eat with them Wednesday. A real enjoyable oinkfest. New thyroid meds must be doing something because I still lose 4 more pounds. Only thing I can figure out unless my extra walking is/working doing something.

Then the lawyer called and gave me some stuff to do. I honestly thought that was why I hired them.
    mad.gif
Then I got a letter from IRS about Dad and that they needed some stuff too. Grrrr Everyone wants something.

Water is draining slowly and I was told maybe I need to have my septic tank pumped out. Going to call on that when I get a chance. It has not been done since 2018. Just one more thing to think about.

It is also time to cut the darn grass again and I am NOT looking forward to that. It is supposed to rain Friday so I can't really procrastinate. I'll get it done, I'm sure.

Hope everyone is having a lovely week.

    Morning, lizards.

And, golly, we're into a third consecutive sunny day, so some basking might be in order ;)

Did get the grass shorter yesterday, so that's done for a bit...

Only thing I can figure out unless my extra walking is/working doing something.

Uh, that and all the yard work you've been doing? :thumb:

Good morning. Boy I've missed you all. It's been crazy here at our daughter's house. They're having the floors refinished so the past week everything on the 1st floor has been smushed into the dining room. 3 coats of sealer were needed, each with 7 hours of dry time so we can't walk on those floors. At least we can now walk on them and yesterday while Mike and I were out looking at houses Brian moved everything out from the dining room. On Sat. they're coming to start work on the dining room floor and stairs so we'll be confined to downstairs for the duration of that work. What a PIA!! What's finished looks great though. Can't wait til all the work is completed.

Meanwhile, the dryer is emitting burning smells. Mike cleaned out the vent. The dryer is old so they may just replace it rather than go to the expense of having it fixed and still own an old dryer. The washer looks much newer.

The house we looked at yesterday was really hard to turn down, but it was just too far away from the kids. Plus, it would be an hour drive for Mike to get to his fly tier meetings - not fun to be doing that drive at night, especially if it's raining. Then we did a drive by of a another house that was a bit closer, but those winding narrow country roads through the woods would be awful in the winter. Its' a beautiful drive now, but those trees in the cold weather don't allow for the sun to melt the ice. We'd be stuck inside all winter - we'd have to stock up on survival food!

There's a GI sickness going around here. It's like food poisoning. Fortunately it only lasts maybe 2 days, but it's miserable. Stock up on anti-back door problems.

I'm off now to get ready for a dermatologist visit. Never been to one before so this should be interesting.

    Hola .. :|

My mower was having issues, so I shlepped it to my regular repair guy that's a whiz with anything with a gas motor .. turns out, the transmission is out and due to age, no replacement parts out there to speak of and it can't be rebuilt ..

I bought a battery power electric .. top rated unit, came with two batteries .. over the last couple weeks, I've really been giving it the workout, since I got it from Amazon and, you know, 30 day return policy ..

I'm actually amazed .. it does an incredibly good job, and, although I can't get my yard done with one charge, it does not take the batteries long to charge back up and I can be doing other yard stuff while waiting .. it's weird, since the decibel level is so low, it's no louder than my Dyson vacuum, in fact it may be even quieter .. you can wear headphones and actually hear the music ..

On a side note, my dog was freaking out the other day in the backyard, so I poked my head out the door and she was tossing around a baby possum, I got the dog in the house, the possum had enough left in it to walk off, yet the next day I found it dead behind the shed ..

These things don't usually wander around in broad daylight, must have got separated from the litter ..

Yes, good to give it a good workout before that window closes!

And that puts you ahead of the curve - some States are banning (or getting ready to) small gas engine yard tools, as they do produce more pollution than cars...

Went battery (40 volt) for my last chain saw, two batteries as well. While that's probably not the best choice for someone in the logging biz, great for a home owner, and with the 2 batteries, one still has juice when I'm out :)

As battery tech continues to improve, sales of these things will heat up, I think .. about every maker has got a foot in that door, hell, you can even buy a zero turn battery unit these days ..

I bought a Sun Joe and, if I keep it, they have a whole set of yard tools that take the same batteries ..

I sold the old mower for $120 to a dude that wanted the motor .. now, I'm trying to decide if I want to put that $120 toward another gas unit, since I know another dude that has a nice, self propelled Honda brand new one for less than half the regular price .. probably fell off the truck, buy hey ..
