So, the bad/annoying news is that last night and again this morning I was notified that 2 of my cc's have been compromised!! Fortunately my cc companies notified me about it - not even sure what alerted them. Not my charges. They were small charges and were already denied so now I just have to wait til my new cards show up next week. Oh bother! Glad I only have 3 cc's to deal with.

Good morning!
The weather here is frigid, like FranC's, and going down to 11 deg tonight. BRRR!

@ShowMeTwice asked about @Bea-FL as he mused about talking to plants in the Random thread. I traded texts with her, letting her know she's been missed and her orchid pics too! She kindly went out to the greenhouse and took these pictures for me to share. It's so nice to see a spot of color while enduring the winter temps.

Bea is still dealing with health challenges and Gary continues to take the best care of her. Please keep sending love, thoughts, and positive vibes to her.

Thanks for the update and photos, and thank Bea for shooting the pics. Sending good vibes her way.

Yeah, it is really nice seeing flowers in the dead of winter.

On top of all that, my brand-new heat pump stopped heating the house and we woke up to a cold house. Had to call the man who installed the unit. Again, he said he had never seen it happen but some wire broke. It was an easy fix after he found it (took him about an hour, working in the cold). He only charged me $80 which is good for a service call. He always works me in when I have a problem which I sure do appreciate.

The coffee is great this morning and it is already up to 34 degrees. At least it is not raining. It is going to get up to 46 so maybe I should try out those ski pants. View attachment 1006886

Stay warm!
Oh no! That's terrible! Been there, done that and it ain't fun. We had a kerosene heater that Mike used to fire up when our heater went out and we had the fireplace so that helped a lot until a repair man could get out to our house. You wouldn't think your heat would go out on a new heater though.

The only thing worse is when the elec. goes out. Ours goes out much more often than at our old house and our lines are buried here too. So I think our next purchase might be a house generator. Gotta do some research on those though. Anybody here have advice on those?

Hi All,
Bea thanks you very much for the kind words & thoughts. We may have made her day as much as she made ours with the pics. I think she was touched by the responses I passed on to her.

@Janet H - yes, Bea was the one with the suet recipe. She lurks in this thread once in a while and always enjoys reading about your grandkids. (as do I, it's been fun watching them grow!)

Stay warm!

There is nary a day that goes by when I don't think of some of the many that have drifted in and out of here and ECF in general .. Bea always cheered things up a bit with her horticultural skills ..

(pssst, Bea .. I still remember the Catwoman outfit and the photo of you and your Dad out on the boardwalk .. ((if I got that wrong, sorry .. brain drain))

BTW, some time back, a Member that Shan't be Named PM'ed me about Johnny / Iffy and his health issues .. is there an update on that .. ??

Since I had leftover slaw from last night, I had Mrs. Paul's fish fillets tonight with homemade oven french fries and a shrimp cocktail. I have not had fish sticks in forever and I thought they were tasty.

It has been a good day to fly a kite around here. I wanted to try out the new ski pants on the motorcycle but I never got out of my pajamas.

Ken is watching movies and I am looking at knitting patterns. I only knit in cold weather. Not sure what I am looking for to make but I sure love to look at patterns.

I have no exciting plans for this weekend (yet). What's everyone doing? Other than staying warm.

I tried for years to get dad to buy one. When I build, I will definitely include that in the house. I am lucky because our electricity does not go out often. I have had to throw out a bunch of food in the freezer before and it is sad. Let me/us know what you find out in your research.

Curious mind here: What do you have against debit cards. If I'm going to use plastic I'd rather use a debit card than a credit card. Too easy to run up a bill on credit cards. At least with a debit card I know I need to have the money in the bank to use it for a purchase.
I always pay off all credit card accounts each month. The agreement is that there is no interest if the account is paid off on time each month. It amounts to an interest-free loan of 30 to 45 days for all moneys that go through the account. Debit cards take your money RIGHT NOW. It does take discipline not to make charges that you will not be able to cover when the bill arrives.

Well I don't like carrying cash,
Like Uncle Willie, I tend to carry a handful of $100 bills in case I should find myself in a situation wheree a flash of green would help. I don't carry more than I could afford to lose (I'd hate it, but I wouldn't miss a meal or be late with the rent if I lost it).

Good morning! Brrrrrrrrr Thank you all for sharing your polar bear weather with me. It was 21 when I got up and the high today is supposed to be 29. That is cold for us. The feel like temp was 15 so when Ken went out to smoke. . . I stayed put.
1laugh.gif
I hope he was joking when he said we should take a ride today and test my ski pants. Nope. Not interested.

I am grateful that the heat is working, but I hate seeing my next electric bill. I don't think it has turned off but that's okay cause I'm comfy.

I finally got on the scales this morning and will assume I have a strong heart. Otherwise, I would have had a cardiac arrest. It took me too long to lose and with thyroid issues, it was hard to lose. I am going to start rectifying that situation today. I cannot blame it on Ken but I will say the boy has been eating well since he moved in with me.

Hope everyone stays warm.

Morning, mixers.

More rain, though scattered. Temps staying over freezing here, snow line about 5K - too high for this time of year, and likely not to be enough...

The only thing worse is when the elec. goes out. Ours goes out much more often than at our old house and our lines are buried here too. So I think our next purchase might be a house generator. Gotta do some research on those though. Anybody here have advice on those?

If looking for a whole house and automatic transfer on an outage, Generac. Been around a long time, know what they're doing. If only a portable, lots of options and what you get depends on how much you want to power up.

Ken is watching movies and I am looking at knitting patterns. I only knit in cold weather.

I ended up being productive today. Busy as a
bee.gif
I know. It surprised me too!
1laugh.gif

Got ALL the wash done. I guess Ken did not take me too seriously when I told him he was going to start doing his own. It was in a pile in the bedroom and I just went ahead and did it because I was cleaning. No biggie. I don't really mind doing the wash. I just hate putting it away. Guess I need to explain it again.

I also got 4 drawers in the half bath emptied. Not much left in there except in the medicine cabinet. I tossed a bunch of outdated prescriptions. I am going to call the drugstore. They used to get rid of meds for you safely. I hope they are still doing that because I do not want to put this in the garbage.

Not sure what's for supper. I just sat down and that is when I get tired. I have two speeds. . . zero and bustin' my rear.

Hope all are having a pleasant afternoon and staying warm, of course.

From everything I have read, Generac is the way to go. I hope to have that where I end up. I wish I had a small one now just to cover the freezer (and maybe my phone/vape charger. I hate tossing money out the window.

Although the critters around here ate well when we lost power for a week a couple of years ago.

Thanks for the votes. Seems to me quite awhile ago someone had something disparaging to say about Generac, but don't remember why they didn't like them. Of course there's always somebody who is not going to like even the very best stuff so I do keep that in mind. I know there's a lot of them out there and they all prob have pros and cons, but it would be nice to eliminate a brand with known problems. I'm going to keep your votes in mind. I should create a folder and gather info. It's a substantial expense so I'd like to do my due diligence. One thing for sure no matter what we get will be a selling point for this home down the line.

Grid failure has become a higher probability over the last 20 years .. whatever backup power source anyone considers, do your homework .. dual / triple fuel systems / .. solar with battery, Tesla Powerwall, there are quite a few options .. some offer a tax advantage as well ..

I tend to think in the longer term when it comes to this .. if you're going to make the investment, anything is better than nothing, but planning on days / weeks, not just hours, is the smart move

If you get a generator, especially a small, fuel burning type, get a CO detector and park your generator outside and away from any doors and windows to the house. It always so sad to hear about the people trying not to freeze or have their generator stolen, ending up dead from CO poisoning from the exhaust of their generator.:(

Please share whatever you find out. I am not ready for one right now but I want one at my next destination. It just makes good sense to me.

That's weird because most things these days make NO sense to me.
